Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, Denmark
Through 13 June 2010
This exhibition at Louisiana gives colour pride of place. Colour in art, in the world and in the eye. Louisiana has been given the unique opportunity to take its pick of one of the world’s very finest private collections of art, the Swiss Werner and Gabrielle Merzbacher’s rich collection in 1999 mentioned in The New York Times as “one of the world’s finest private collections of art”. The works have been selected with colour as the cue, and in a dialogue with a number of works from Louisiana’s collection the museum showing an exhibition of colour in art and the many discussions of colour up to the present day.
For more than a hundred years artists all over the world have been intent on rendering the intensity of colour. They have engaged in research and studies of colour that have led to brand new possibilities in painting. In words and images and through interactive programmes the exhibition Colour in Art will present ways in which artists throughout the 20th century have either made use of colour as an artistic resource or researched it to find new colours and colour systems.
Visual art emancipates colour, and the artists who work with colour choose to communicate their idea or message with a subjective approach that is not tied to the material world, but where it is the artist who evaluates the interrelations of colours.
The exhibition features more than 150 works – including nine Kandinsky works.
