The 33rd edition of Outsider Art Fair (OAF), the premier fair dedicated to Self-Taught Art, art brut, and Outsider Art, features 66 exhibitors from 40 cities in 9 countries at the Metropolitan Pavilion.

Visitors to the fair can expect to see art by acknowledged masters such as Henry Darger (1892–1973), William Edmondson (1874–1951), Augustin Lesage (1876–1954), Judith Scott (1943-2005), and Bill Traylor (1854-1949), as well as works by living artists such as Noviadi Angkasapura, JJ Cromer, Shuvinai Ashoona, M’onma, Julian Martin, Margot, Dan Miller and Leopold Strobl.

OAF 2025 welcomes back renowned dealers like Fleisher/Ollman Gallery (Philadelphia), which will be devoting its entire presentation to works from the estate of long-time American Folk Art Museum board member Audrey B. Heckler. It will include examples by James Castle (1899-1977), Sam Doyle (1906-1985), Howard Finster (1916-2001), Martín Ramírez (1895-1963), and Bill Traylor. Ricco/Maresca Gallery (New York) will present works from the collection of advertising pioneer Robert M. Greenberg. Built over more than 40 years, this collection holds superb works by Darger, Traylor, and Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930), among others. Aarne Anton/Nexus Singularity (New York), Cavin-Morris Gallery (New York), Marion Harris (Connecticut and New York), all of whom have exhibited with OAF since its founding, make their returns, and after a five-year hiatus, original exhibitor Henry Boxer (London) will also be on hand.

Outsider Art Fair 2005's Curated Space, Follow My Moves, will be an exhibit of Self-Taught art from Brazil, curated by São Paulo-based Mateus Nunes, and will feature works by renowned artists such as Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato (1900–1995), Chico da Silva (1910–1985), Conceição dos Bugres (1914-1984), and Maria Lira Marques (b. 1945).

Other booth highlights include paintings by Maurice Sullins (1910–1995) at Hana Pietri (Chicago), paintings by manga artist Takashi Nemoto at Akio Nagasawa Gallery (Tokyo), and works from Canadian Arctic and by other contemporary Inuit artists at Feheley Fine Arts (Toronto). Zürcher Gallery will feature a solo show of drawings by American poet Ted Joans (1928-2003) and James Barron will exhibit the work of Janet Sobel (1893–1968), whose abstract paintings were championed by Peggy Guggenheim in the 1940s and were recently featured in a solo exhibition at Houston’s Menil Collection.

Outsider Art Fair, the only fair dedicated to self-taught art, art brut and outsider art announced details for its 31st edition, taking place at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan and featuring 64 exhibitors from 28 cities in 8 countries, with 12 first-time exhibitors.

Since 1993, the Outsider Art Fair has championed self-taught artists from around the world. Returning dealers who have been with OAF since its inception include Aarne Anton / Nexus Singularity (New York), Cavin-Morris Gallery (New York), Fleisher/Ollman Gallery (Philadelphia), Carl Hammer Gallery (Chicago), Marion Harris (New York), and Ricco/Maresca Gallery (New York). Visitors can once again count on seeing works by the most acclaimed artists in the field, like Morton Bartlett, James Castle, Henry Darger, Thornton Dial, William Edmondson, Minnie Evans, Guo Fengyi, Bill Traylor, Martín Ramírez, Nellie Mae Rowe, Judith Scott, George Widener, and Joseph Yoakum. The fair has a longstanding history of working with the world’s top ateliers or “workshops” that serve artists with developmental, intellectual, and physical disabilities, including Arts of Life/Circle Contemporary (Chicago), ArTech Collective (The Bronx, NY), Creative Growth Art Center (Oakland), LAND Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Project Onward (Chicago), Pure Vision Arts (New York), and SAGE Studio (Austin).

Among this year’s fair highlights, Donald Ellis will present an early group of graphite and coloured pencil drawings by Inuit artist Parr (1893-1969), celebrated today for his unadulterated depictions of the hunt, animals and the human figure. First time exhibitor Feheley Fine Arts (Toronto) will also feature works by Inuit artists. SHRINE (New York) will showcase the work of Mary T. Smith (1904-1995) and David Butler (1898-1997), two exemplary figures in the Southern tradition of "yard shows," where Black artists decorated their properties to convey messages that could not be openly voiced; and first-time exhibitor Valley House (Dallas, TX), who will present a mini-retrospective of Texas self-taught artist Valton Tyler (1944-2017). 

For this year’s OAF Curated Space, the fair has joined forces with Grammy Award-winning music producer and supervisor, Randall Poster, who has co-founded The Birdsong Project, a collaboration with some of the world’s most respected musicians, artists, poets, and actors, to support The National Audubon Society. Poster and fair owner Andrew Edlin, who have been friends since childhood, will co-curate an exhibition, We Are Birds, featuring dozens of works inspired by birdlife made by self-taught and contemporary artists, including Greg Burak, Minnie Evans, Tony Fitzpatrick, William Hawkins, Chris Johanson, Pam Lins, Eleanor Ray, Fred Tomaselli, and Bill Traylor. The project recently released For The Birds, an art-filled, 20-LP box set containing over 200 tracks of original music and bird-related poetry by composers and performers including Yoko Ono and Anohni, Elvis Costello, Laurie Anderson, Yo-Yo Ma, Beck, and Kamasi Washington, with avian-themed verse written by poets and read by actors and artists including Tilda Swinton and Robert Pattinson. Recently, The Birdsong Project presented an exhibition at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden that featured over 30 bird houses designed by a range of notable artists, architects, and designers, such as Tom Sachs, Nina Cooke John, Misha Kahn, and Suchi Reddy.

Another highlight of this year’s fair is a special presentation of The Life and Death of Elvis Presley: A Suite by visionary American artist and architect Paul Laffoley. The series of eight complex paintings, completed in 1995, represents the artist’s interpretation of the distinct phases in the life of Elvis Presley.

Newly appointed fair director Sofía Lanusse remarked, “I’m excited to build upon the creative momentum generated by the fair and keep challenging the boundaries of the field, which OAF has become celebrated for.”

Fondée à New York en 1993, l’Outsider Art Fair (OAF) est la première foire artistique exclusivement consacrée à l'art autodidacte, à l'art brut et à l'art outsider. Elle présente à la fois des maîtres de réputation internationale, tels que James Castle, Aloïse Corbaz, Henry Darger, Thornton Dial, William Edmondson, Martín Ramírez, Judith Scott, Bill Traylor, et Adolf Wölfli, et des artistes contemporains comme M’onma, Susan Te Kahurangi King, Frank Walter et George Widener. Très vite reconnu pour son non-conformisme, l’OAF a joué un rôle crucial dans le développement d’une communauté de collectionneurs passionnés et dans la reconnaissance accrue de ces formes d’art hors réseaux sur la scène artistique contemporaine.

En 2012, l’OAF a été acquise par Wide Open Arts, une société créée par le galeriste new-yorkais Andrew Edlin. L’édition 2013 de l’OAF, acclamée par la critique, triple son nombre de visiteurs par rapport à l’année antérieure. Fort de ce succès, Wide Open Arts a décidé d’exporter sa foire à Paris en octobre 2013, donnant ainsi un souffle nouveau à une riche tradition parisienne pour l’art brut. OAF Paris se tient d’abord pendant deux ans à l'Hôtel Le A, à proximité du Grand Palais, et déménage en 2015 à l'Hôtel du Duc, un hôtel particulier situé dans le quartier de l'Opéra. Depuis 2018, la foire se tient à L'Atelier Richelieu, dans le 2e arrondissement.

Pour sa 10e édition à Paris – la première édition en présentiel depuis 2019 – OAF Paris revient à l'Atelier Richelieu du 15 au 18 septembre 2022, avec 30 exposants de 24 villes représentant 13 pays, et est l'édition inaugurale sous la direction de Sofía Lanusse. Des galeries de renom sont de retour, notamment la galerie du marché (Lausanne), la Galerie J-P Ritsch-Fisch (Strasbourg), la Andrew Edlin Gallery (New York) et Creative Growth (Oakland). The

Gallery of Everything (Londres) fait ses débuts à l'OAF Paris avec son propre stand, en plus d'une co-présentation avec Rizomi (Pavie) des sculptures de l'artiste toscan Pietro Moschini (1952-2011).

Parmi les points forts de la foire, citons les œuvres de l'artiste français Francis Palanc (1928-2015) à la Galerie Arthur Borgnis (Paris) et Babahoum à Escale Nomad (Paris). Les œuvres d'artistes de renommée internationale comme Aloïse Corbaz, Carlo Zinelli, Madge Gill, Henry Darger, Martín Ramírez et James Castle sont également exposées.

Parmi les nouveaux exposants, notons suns.works (Zurich), qui présente une sélection d'œuvres de l'artiste suisse Hans Krüsi (1920-1995) et celles du légendaire producteur de musique et artiste Lee Scratch Perry (1936-2021). À la GRYDER Gallery (Nouvelle-Orléans), on trouve une sélection d'artistes de la Nouvelle-Orléans, dont Andrew LaMar Hopkins et Dapper Bruce Lafitte. À la Galerie Vidourle Prix (Sauve), on découvre les œuvres d'artistes du sud de la France et à Yataal Art (Dakar), un solo show de l'artiste sénégalais Pape Diop.

Cette année, l'OAF Paris accueille deux expositions : I Wish I Could Speak in Technicolor sous le commissariat de Maurizio Cattelan et Marta Papini (organisatrice artistique, Biennale de Venise 2022), qui s'articule autour de la vie et de l'œuvre d'Eugene Von Bruenchenhein (1910-1983) qui, en plus de la photographie, de la céramique, des dessins à l'encre et de la sculpture en béton, est connu pour ses peintures abstraites kaléidoscopiques des années 1950, créées à l'aide de ses doigts ainsi que de bâtons, de peignes, de feuilles et d'autres ustensiles de bricolage qu’il utilise pour faire glisser la peinture à l'huile sur la surface de planches de masonite ou de morceaux de carton provenant de boîtes d'emballage de la boulangerie où il travaillait. 

La seconde exposition, The Underground is Always Outside, est organisée conjointement par la dessinatrice Aline Kominsky-Crumb, pionnière de comics de la scène underground, et Dan Nadel, auteur et commissaire indépendant. Leur présentation met à l’honneur les comics originaux de figures canoniques du genre, notamment Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, Bill Griffith, Art Spiegelman, Spain Rodriguez, Robert Williams et S. Clay Wilson, aux côtés de leurs pairs féminins tout aussi fascinants, bien que moins connus, dont Phoebe Gloeckner, Diane Noomin, Willy Mendes et Sharon Rudahl.

Enfin, l'OAF Paris accueille Rodovid Gallery (Kiev), qui présente une sélection d'œuvres relevant de l’art folklorique ukrainien, dont celles de la légendaire Maria Prymachenko (1909-1997), incluse dans l'édition actuelle de la Biennale de Venise. Parmi les autres artistes présents à Venise qui peuvent être vus à Paris, notons Shuvinai Ashoona, Minnie Evans et Sister Gertrude Morgan.
