Charles Sandison: The Garden of Death @ Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki

Charles Sandison
The Garden of Death
Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki
21 February – 23 March 2025

Charles Sandison taught himself to code during a time when computers were not yet part of daily life, and it became an organic aspect of his artistic thinking. His works are immersive, site-specific installations in which the viewer encounters ever-changing and evolving landscapes composed of digital and physical elements. These installations blend cultural memory, linguistic structures, and history in a continuous process that crosses temporal boundaries, where meanings are not predetermined. The past and the present, history and cultural heritage, meet the possibilities of the future.

In the main gallery space, Charles Sandison creates an installation where these themes come to life, drawing parallels with motifs found throughout Western art history. The work is based on Hugo Simberg’s The Garden of Death, where archetypal themes—such as the skeleton representing death—are brought to the level of human experience: they live, suffer, love, and experience just as we mortals do. The garden is present not only as a theme but also in its concrete realization. The gallery, as a closed space, becomes a growth medium where, instead of organic life forms, digital entities grow. The computers placed in the space interact with each other, processing information—language, symbols, and behaviors—that, like DNA, passes on to the next generation. The work is not a pre-designed, repetitive video installation, but rather a code in which different parts communicate with one another, generating new content in real time.

This contrast between eternal themes and human experience raises questions about the relationship between humans and technology in Sandison’s works, alongside the growing concerns about the power of artificial intelligence. Is technology shaping society in ways we do not yet fully understand, and are we humans the caretakers of the digital world, or the other way around? Have the oracles of old been replaced by probability calculations, and is collective memory now stored in digital archives?

Born in Scotland, Charles  Sandison (b. 1969) graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1993, and his installations have been shown in public spaces around the world. His works are held in numerous Finnish and international collections, including the Kiasma Museum, the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Denver Art Museum, and the Bonn Art Museum. The artist lives and works in Tampere.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents Digital Witness: Revolutions in Design, Photography, and Film, which examines the impact of digital image manipulation tools from the 1980s to the present through the works of nearly 200 artists, designers, and makers. Assessing, for the first time, simultaneous developments and debates in the fields of photography, graphic design, and visual effects, the exhibition illuminates today's visual culture where digital editing tools are more accessible than ever before.

Over the last four decades, image-editing software has radically transformed our visual world. This relatively compressed period has taken us from the rise of early paint programs, to the development of both commercially packaged softwares and open-source alternatives, and now the ascension of Al image generators. The increasing ease with which images and text can be digitally generated and altered has enabled new forms of creative experimentation, while also introducing aesthetic and ethical issues across mass media, politics, and advertising. Digital Witness traces these developments with more than 150 photographs, posters, publications, videos, moving image files, film clips, and interactive software experiences. The exhibition charts the emergence of distinctive digital aesthetic strategies, examining how they have altered the patterns, flow, and stakes of visual communication.

Digital Witness: Exhibition Highlights

Organized in three thematic sections, Digital Witness raises questions such as: Where have artists advanced, exploited, or disrupted available means of digital creation and transmission? In what ways can software lead artists, and in what ways can artists shape software? As we are now several decades into the software revolution, can the historical context of "the digital" help us understand its future manifestations?

The exhibition's first section, Blur and Sharpen: Digital Realism, traces artists' efforts to emulate the three-dimensional world and hide evidence of digital interventions. Groundbreaking films from Jurassic Park (1993) to The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and beyond integrated computer graphics with live action and motion capture, embedding fantastical scenarios within otherwise familiar settings or building internally coherent worlds in 3D digital space. Meanwhile, amid initial resistance from traditional darkroom practitioners, photographers including Andreas Gursky and Loretta Lux explored the realm between fact and fiction, seamlessly refining or distorting reality in ways that tested viewers' perceptions and comfort.

Morph and Warp: Computer Aesthetics looks at creators who embraced the rough textures of technology, from April Greiman and John Maeda to Petra Cortwright and Todd Gray. Their work aestheticized glitches such as jagged edges and jerky movements, positing the digital world as its own entity rathert han an imitation of analog life. In some cases, this took a surrealistic form, with distorted shapes and colors that foregrounded technological possibilities and explored the extremes allowed by the new medium. In particular, motion graphics such as title sequences, kinetic typography, music videos, and advertisements were sites of experimentation.

The final section, Cut and Paste: Digital Collage, highlights artists like Keith Piper, Lucas Blalock, and Casey Kauffmann, who found creative potential in editing advances, taking analog art forms—collage in particular, with its potential for surreal juxtapositions—to digitally enabled extremes. In contrast, examples throughout the exhibition demonstrate how artists have resisted dominant commercial softwares, developing open-source alternatives such as Urs and Jürg Lehni's Scriptographer plug-in.

Publication: The exhibition is accompanied by a substantial, image-packed catalogue, co-published by LACMA and DelMonico Books/D.A.P., featuring Q&As with noted visual artists, filmmakers, and designers David Fincher, Copper Frances Giloth, April Greiman, MANUAL, LaJune McMillian, Rosa Menkman, Sert Monroy, Casey Reas, Thomas Ruff, Kyuha Shim, Raqi Syed, and Cesar Velazquez. The publication is edited with an introduction by Britt Salvesen and Staci Steinberger, and includes scholarly essays by Kim Beil, Hye Jean Chung, Carolyn L. Kane, Briar Levit, Staci Steinberger, and Anuradha Vikram. It was created as part of the PST ART: Art & Science Collide series.

This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Digital Witness is presented as part of PST ART: Art & Science Collide, a landmark regional event exploring the intersections of art and science, both past and present. The exhibition is co-curated by Britt Salvesen, Department Head and Curator of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department and Prints and Drawings, and Staci Steinberger, Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, at LACMA.

Artist Gioele Amoro @ Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki – "Painted Words: A Fusion of Art and AI" Exhibition

Gioele Amoro
Painted Words: A Fusion of Art and AI
Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki
June 7 – August 18, 2024

Gioele Amaro is a digital painter whose latest exhibition is a collaboration between human creativity and AI. Amaro’s second solo exhibition at Galerie Forsblom again pushes the boundaries of art, this time going even further by plunging into the world of trompe l’oeil and exploring the enigmatic allure of ethereal, shimmering surfaces that keep shifting and changing. Gioele Amaro’s new paintings furnish convincing evidence of the artist’s masterful command of both traditional painting techniques and new digital technology.

Gioele Amaro’s latest innovative paintings are the outcome of an intriguing process through which he seamlessly fuses his creative vision with the boundless capabilities of artificial intelligence. Working with AI algorithms, the artist has crafted commands and words to generate compositions that capture the essence of painting in all its resplendence. His AI-generated paintings are designed on a computer, printed on canvas, and finalized with a coat of varnish to bring out its brightness and depth. This results in a blurring of boundaries between the virtual and physical worlds, inviting viewers to reflect on the fundamental nature of perception and reality.

The exhibition immerses visitors in a universe where something extraordinary is born from the marriage of technology and creativity. Gioele Amaro’s paintings revel in subtle interplays of light and color, creating complex patterns that dance alluringly across the surface of the canvas. His paintings offer us a glimpse into a future where art knows no boundaries.

Gioele Amaro (b.1986) is an Italian artist who studied at La Villette in Paris and at the University of Art and Architecture Mediterranea in Reggio Calabria. Amaro has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and China. The artist divides his time between Paris and Milan.

Krista Kim @ Art Dubai 2024 - "Heart Space" New Julius Baer Commission

Krista Kim: Heart Space
New Julius Baer Commission
Art Dubai 2024
28 February - 3 Mach 2024

Art Dubai and Julius Baer, announces a newly commissioned digital installation by Canadian-Korean artist KRISTA KIM that will debut in the Julius Baer Lounge at Art Dubai. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Art Dubai 2024 will take place from 1 to 3 March (previews 28 and 29 February) at Madinat Jumeirah.

Heart Space م ا سح ةال ق لب is an immersive experience that will allow guests to connect with one another through the universal language of the human heartbeat. In real-time, each visitor’s unique heart rhythm will be visualised through hypnotic patterns and meditative shapes displayed across a dynamic LED canvas, shifting to reflect each new guest’s energy. The installation puts forward the concept of ‘oneness’ where participants come together to create a social fabric harnessing the power of art and technology.

This new commission is a continuation of Krista Kim’s ongoing exploration into digital consciousness and the creative potential of screens as digital instruments of wellbeing and longevity. She developed her signature language of shifting gradients using digital software since 2012, her works on glass and plexiglass aim to hypnotise viewers into a trance of tranquillity while her immersive video works provide meditative experiences of colour and light. In 2014, as a response to society's over-reliance on technology, Kim started the Techism Movement, a philosophy that recognise technological innovation as an artistic discipline, encouraging artists to promote digital humanism for our digital culture. In 2024 she will present her work Continuum at the World Economic Forum at Davos as one of the conference’s cultural leaders.

Art Dubai is committed to working with its partners to develop new commissioning models and innovative cultural programmes to present new commissions and premieres by internationally renowned artists. These partnerships place particular emphasis on education and technology, which are playing a critical role in shaping the future of the creative scene in Dubai. Julius Baer has been a lead partner of Art Dubai since 2015. A long-standing supporter of the arts across the world, the collaboration with Art Dubai is in-line with the bank’s long-term commitment to supporting the UAE’s emergence as both a business and cultural hub.

Krista Kim, artist said:
“I’m profoundly thankful to Julius Baer for enabling such an ambitious vision as ‘Heart Space’ – one amplifying AI technology’s power to reconnect where social media algorithms have fractured. As individuals participate, I hope each participant feels inspired in their singular beauty yet leaves appreciating a greater whole. My deepest wish is that from the micro – encoding each distinctive rhythm – to the macro tapestry those strands weave by exhibit’s close, visitors rediscover how alike our heartbeats sound when truly heard," shares Krista Kim of her debut with Julius Baer at Art Dubai.
Heart Space is part of Julius Baer’s NEXT universe, an initiative designed to explore investment thematics and encourage the interdisciplinary exploration of megatrends across the arts, science, and technology. NEXT supports collaboration with forward-thinking artists and institutions committed to new forms of cultural production at the vanguard of scientific research and technological development. It is the second major digital commission by Julius Baer to debut at Art Dubai, following an acclaimed collaboration with Refik Anadol in March 2023.

Gioele Amaro @ Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki - Gods and Losers

Gioele Amaro: Gods and Losers
Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki
18 August – 10 September 2023

Now making his Finnish debut, Gioele Amaro defines himself as a digital painter who works with pixels instead of a paintbrush. His art pushes the boundaries of painting by striking up a dialogue between traditional media and new technologies. Gioele Amaro’s canvas-printed digital compositions stretch the definition of what is traditionally conceived as a painting. His art emanates from the virtual world, entering reality as physical objects that challenge the very notion of what a painting is supposed to be.

Reflections play a key role in Gioele Amaro’s paintings. The artist explores the various meanings of reflections both on a cerebral and material level. He describes paintings as altars for prayer – not the traditional devotional variety, but the modern-day secular worship of such things as physical beauty, aesthetics, and fashion. Gioele Amaro’s paintings are also influenced by the spirituality of Mark Rothko’s (1930-1970) art. Beyond the intermingling of the real and the virtual, the interesting thing about Gioele Amaro’s art is its citational complexity and his use of forms and allusions that connect his oeuvre with the continuum of art history.

Originally trained as an architect, Gioele Amaro takes a special interest in materials and surfaces. His paintings mimic the shiny, reflective surfaces of various metals, such as copper, aluminum, stainless steel, or iron foil. Despite their apparent simplicity, his compositions consist of meticulously polished details.

Gioele Amaro (b. 1986) is an Italian artist who studied at La Villette in Paris and at the University of Art and Architecture Mediterranea in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Gioele Amaro has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and China. In 2023, he lashed collaboration with the fashion brand Valentino. The artist is based in Paris and Milan.
