Ruth Asawa: Retrospective Exhibition @ SFMOMA, San Francisco - MoMA, NYC - Guggenheim Bilbao - Fondation Beyeler

Ruth Asawa: Retrospective
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
April 5 – September 2, 2025

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) presents Ruth Asawa: Retrospective, the first major national and international museum retrospective of the groundbreaking work of RUTH ASAWA (1926–2013). Premiering at SFMOMA, this first posthumous retrospective features the entire spectrum of the artist’s awe-inspiring practice. Sculpture, drawings, prints, paintings, design objects and archival material from US-based public and private collections offer an in-depth look at her expansive output and its inspirations, exploring the ways her longtime San Francisco home and garden served as the epicenter of her creative universe, and highlighting the ethos of collaboration and inclusivity that informed her numerous public sculpture commissions and unwavering dedication to arts advocacy.
“Ruth Asawa: Retrospective is deeply aligned with SFMOMA’s vision to be both local and global—presenting Bay Area artists with profound significance that also have the potential to be highly impactful and relevant on an international scale,” said Christopher Bedford, Helen and Charles Schwab Director of SFMOMA. “This exhibition provides an opportunity to celebrate the legendary Ruth Asawa, who was both a widely acclaimed artist and a hometown inspiration whose impact can be very much felt today.”
Ruth Asawa: Retrospective features more than 300 works spanning six decades of the artist’s career, engaging in the full range of materials and techniques that Asawa employed. Her signature looped-wire sculptures shares gallery space with lesser-known works in other mediums that supply valuable insight into the interconnectedness and relentlessly experimental nature of her artistic vision. In addition to Asawa’s own work, the exhibition includes a select number of works by peers and mentors with whom Ruth Asawa engaged in creative dialogue including Josef Albers, Imogen Cunningham, Buckminster Fuller, Ray Johnson, Hazel Larsen Archer, Merry Renk and Marguerite Wildenhain.

Ruth Asawa: Retrospective is an exhibition partnership between SFMOMA and The Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA) and co-curated by Janet Bishop, Thomas Weisel Family Chief Curator and Curator of Painting and Sculpture, SFMOMA and Cara Manes, Associate Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture, MoMA.
“It is an immense privilege to present the full range of Ruth Asawa’s life’s work through this retrospective,” said Janet Bishop. “Not only was Asawa an exceptionally talented artist—among the most distinguished sculptors of the 20th century and a major contributor in so many other mediums—but she lived her values in everything she did, modeling the importance of the arts and opening up creative opportunities for others at every turn.”

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS

Ruth Asawa: Retrospective unfolds across more than 14,000 square feet in the Barbara and Gerson Bakar and Mimi and Peter Haas Galleries on SFMOMA’s fourth floor. Following a loosely chronological arc, a dozen sections present Asawa’s extensive body of work within the unfolding narrative of her life and career.

Ruth Asawa was born in Norwalk, California, in 1926 and raised on a farm. In 1942, the teenage Asawa and her family were unjustly displaced to incarceration camps, along with many other people of Japanese descent, in the wake of Executive Order 9066. After the end of World War II, Asawa enrolled in the experimental Black Mountain College near Asheville, North Carolina. The opening gallery of the exhibition will highlight her highly generative studies at the college from 1946 to 1949. With the encouragement of Black Mountain College teachers including Josef Albers, Buckminster Fuller and Max Dehn, Asawa flourished, creating drawings with undulating lines, repeating patterns and studies of positive and negative space that would resonate in later work. This gallery also features Asawa’s 1947 trip to Toluca, Mexico, during which she learned a looped-wire technique used for basketry that would prove fundamental to her sculptural practice of the following decade and beyond.

In 1949, Ruth Asawa moved from North Carolina to San Francisco—the city she would call home for the rest of her life—and exhibited at SFMOMA (then the San Francisco Museum of Art) for the first time. A gallery devoted to the 1950s in San Francisco will reveal a decade of tremendous productivity, including the development of the artist’s signature innovation—hanging looped-wire sculptures with forms within forms and interlocking lobes, no two alike—that she exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. An adjacent gallery will include Asawa’s designs for commercial projects including fabric patterns and wallpaper.

In 1962, Ruth Asawa received the gift of a desert plant that inspired her next major body of work: tied-wire sculptures, some wall-mounted, some suspended and some displayed directly on the floor. A gallery focused on nature will examine the artist’s deep affinity with the organic world and its relationship to her practice in both two and three dimensions.

In a shift in register from the unfolding of Asawa’s artistic innovations across time, the exhibition features a gallery evoking the Noe Valley home and studio that was the hub of the artist’s creative and family life for more than half a century, from the early 1960s until her passing in 2013. This section reconvenes a grouping of wire sculptures of various forms and sizes that Asawa is known to have hung from the rafters in her living room, as well as a selection of the artist’s sketchbooks and examples of her material experiments in clay, copper, electroplating and bronze. Highlights of the space are Asawa’s original hand-carved redwood doors from the house and works she displayed by other artists, including Josef Albers, Ray Johnson, Peggy Tolk-Watkins and Marguerite Wildenhain.

Another section spanning several decades features the artist’s miniatures: a dozen of her tiniest wire sculptures—the smallest measuring just over one inch in diameter—that are installed in cases that invite close looking. The continued inspiration of the artist’s garden is revealed in a final gallery featuring a stunning array of Asawa’s late drawings of plants, bouquets and flowers produced during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Throughout the retrospective, Asawa’s contemporaneous arts advocacy and public sculpture practice from the 1960s forward are highlighted. Video, photographs, maquettes and archival materials  illuminate Asawa’s fountains at San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square (Andrea, 1968); Union Square (San Francisco Fountain, 1973); and Bayside Plaza, Embarcadero (Aurora, 1986), as well as projects connected to Japanese American incarceration in San Jose (Japanese American Internment Memorial, 1990–94) and at San Francisco State University (Garden of Remembrance, 2000-02).

Estimate: $40-60 million
To be Offered on 14 May in New York

A testament to the auction house’s unwavering commitment to the legacy of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Phillips will offer three magnificent paintings by the artist this Spring, all formerly from the original collection of Francesco Pellizzi and the Pellizzi Family. Professor Pellizzi was the co-founder and editor of the journal Res, Anthropology and Aesthetics, published by the Peabody at Harvard and Chicago University Press. Each of the works was acquired by Pellizzi from Annina Nosei in the early 1980s, a pivotal point in the artist’s career, and remained in his collection for decades. Phillips’ Evening Sales in New York and Hong Kong mark the first time that these important works will be offered publicly. Untitled (ELMAR), 1982, and Untitled (Portrait of a Famous Ballplayer), 1981, will be sold in New York on 14 May, with Native Carrying Some Guns, Bibles, Amorites on Safari, 1982, being offered two weeks later in Hong Kong on 31 May. Prior to the sales, the three works are unveiled in New York for an exhibition open from 8-14 April, followed by a tour to Los Angeles from 23-25 April, marking the last time that they will be on view together.
Robert Manley, Deputy Chairman and Worldwide Co-Head of Department, said, “Phillips is proud to have become the house of Basquiat over the past decade. From the sale of Flexible for $45 million from the artist’s estate, to the $85 million sale of Untitled, 1982, from the Maezawa Collection, to our role as a lead sponsor of the Basquiat family’s King Pleasure exhibition, Phillips’ celebration of the artist’s genius extends beyond the saleroom. We are now honored to announce this incredible group of works, boasting some of Basquiat’s most iconic imagery with equally impressive provenance and exhibition history. An inspired collector, Francesco Pellizzi acquired timeless works that underscore Basquiat's enduring significance and artistic vision, as they continue to inspire and provoke thought forty years later.”
A classicist and an anthropologist by training, who had studied with Claude Lévi-Strauss in Paris, Professor Pellizzi wrote in one of his many essays on art*, “A ‘good eye,’—I’ve always had trouble understanding what that expression meant—is, if anything, the capacity to connect with what is truly unprecedented (hence “disturbing” if only for a little while).”

Leading the group of works being offered is Untitled (ELMAR), created in 1982 and acquired by the Pellizzi Family just two years later [illustrated page one]. At nearly eight feet wide, the monumental work is a cornerstone of el Jean-MicBasquiat's golden year, during which he transitioned from street art to gallery success. Emblematic of Basquiat’s best works, Untitled (ELMAR) is rich in iconography and self-referential imagery. On the left, a “fallen angel” figure, birdlike and adorned with the recurring crown-of-thorns motif—which doubles as a halo—hovers above a luminous blue sea of scribbled waves and the text “ELMAR”, suggesting a modern-day Icarus on the verge of descent. To the right, a radiant archer, also crowned, releases two arrows in his direction. Untitled (ELMAR) ultimately reflects Jean-Michel Basquiat's exploration of duality within his own identity and encapsulates the essence of the artist at the peak of his creative powers.

Untitled (ELMAR) has a significant history; it was included in an exhibition dedicated to the Collection of Francesco Pellizzi at the Hofstra Museum in New York in 1989, and later presented at Gagosian Los Angeles as part of a memorial exhibition in 1998, marking the 10-year anniversary of Basquiat’s death. It was notably featured on the cover of the accompanying catalogue. More recently, the work was prominently exhibited in the artist’s historical 2018 retrospective at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Estimate: $6.5-8.5 Million
To be offered on 14 May in New York

Jean-Michel Basquiat's groundbreaking transition from street art to canvas reached a pivotal moment in 1981 as seen in Untitled (Portrait of a Famous Ballplayer). This seminal piece, executed during a transformative period in Basquiat's career, stands as a testament to his exploration of race, identity, and American culture, which would endure throughout the rest of his career. It was exhibited at historic shows such as Nosei’s Jean-Michel Basquiat Memorial Exhibition, which opened in December 1988, just a few months after his passing and coinciding with what would have been the artist’s 28th birthday.

In Untitled (Portrait of a Famous Ballplayer), Jean-Michel Basquiat juxtaposes symbols of the "all-American" sport with his depiction of a Black central figure donning a baseball uniform, as well as his signature text and crown motifs. Basquiat challenges societal norms and confronts stereotypes, inviting viewers into a complex dialogue on inclusion and exclusion within American culture. Basquiat's use of the phrase “FAMOUS NEGRO ATHLETES” (with “NEGRO ATHLETES” notably crossed out) serves as a potent commentary on race, identity, and representation. It also reflects Basquiat's own experiences as a Black artist living and working in a predominantly white art world.

Since Phillips became a key operator in Asia in 2015, the company has been dedicated to presenting the best Western artworks to collectors and enthusiasts in the region. The company’s significant growth in Asia underscores the activity of Asian collectors acquiring works by the most important international artists. Jean-Michel Basquiat is a perfect example of this, with collectors in Asia being drawn to the artist’s oeuvre, which resonates deeply with the region's rich artistic traditions. In 2022, Phillips sold Untitled, 1982, from the collection of Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa, with the buyer also being a private collector in Asia. Given Basquiat’s enduring appeal and resonance in Asia, Phillips offers Native Carrying Some Guns, Bibles, Amorites on Safari, 1982, at Phillips Hong Kong on 31 May.

In this work, a Black figure dominates the canvas with its arms raised, confronting a colonial poacher. The artwork merges intricate draftsmanship with street art gestures and takes on such significant subjects such as slavery and empire. Through a direct portrayal and the incorporation of text, Jean-Michel Basquiat critiques colonial commerce, encapsulating his broader themes of colonization, commercialization, and African American history. Reduced to caricatures, the figures symbolize “native” and “colonizer”, evoking explicit critiques of white imperialism. Native Carrying Some Guns, Bibles, Amorites on Safari reflects Jean-Michel Basquiat’s acute awareness of societal issues and stands as an emblematic representation of his oeuvre, capturing the intensity of his artistic vision.

ART PARIS 2024
Grand Palais Ephémère, Paris
4 - 7 avril 2024

Art Paris 2024 : Fragiles utopies.

Artistes selectionnés : Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930–2017) - Richard Saltoun / Joël Andrianomearisoa (né en 1977) - Almine Rech / Jean-Marie Appriou (né en 1986) - Perrotin / Thomas Bayrle (né en 1937) - Galerie East / Karina Bisch (née en 1974) - Lahumière / Saloua Raouda Choucair (1916-2017) - Saleh Barakat / Michele Ciacciofera (né en 1969) - Galerie Michel Rein / Daniel et Grégory Dewar et Gicquel (nés en 1976 et en 1975) - Loevenbruck / Elizabeth Garouste (née en 1946) - Galerie Ketabi Bourdet / GE BA - Galerie Françoise Livinec / Josef Grau-Garriga (1929-2011) - Galerie Claude Bernard / Sheila Hicks (née en 1934) - Galerie Frank Elbaz / Jérôme Hirson (né en 1984) - Galerie Le sentiment des choses / Patrick Kim-Gustafson (né en 1986) - Marguo / Jacqueline Lerat (1920-1992) et Jean Lerat (1913-1992) - Capazza / Barbara Levittoux-Świderska (1933-2019) - Richard Saltoun / Océanie - sculpture anonyme réalisée en 1920 - Galerie Jeanne Bucher Jaeger / Shiro Tsujimura (né en 1947) - Galerie Le sentiment des choses / Jeanne Vicerial (née en 1991) – Templon / Jane Yang-D’Haene (née en 1968) - Bienvenu Steinberg & J

On 30 November, Christie’s will present Shen the T. rex – a rare, scientifically-important Tyrannosaurus rex (T. rex) skeleton, researched by leading palaeontologists from global institutions. An historic moment, this will be the first time a T. rex skeleton has ever been offered at auction in Asia. The lot will highlight the 20th/21st Century Art Evening Sale during Christie’s Hong Kong Autumn Auction Week, and the estimate is available on request.

Shen the T. rex has been researched by the leading academic palaeontologists Dr. David A. Burnham, Professor of Palaeontology and Theropod specialist, and Dr. John R. Nudds, Professor of Palaeontology, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Manchester.

The skeleton will be displayed and auctioned at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, offering an incredible opportunity for collectors, science enthusiasts, and dinosaur fans alike to view and learn about this iconic prehistoric predator. Christie’s are dedicated to sharing monumental moments such as this as widely as possible, as part of their commitment to fostering education and appreciation for art and cultural treasures. The skeleton was previously on view at the Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall in Singapore (28 – 30 October 2022).

Francis Belin, President, Christie’s Asia Pacific, commented, “It is an honour to be entrusted with the first auction in Asia of a T. rex skeleton – a groundbreaking moment for the market in the region. This is a world-class specimen for museums and institutions, and its auction in Hong Kong in November offers an unprecedented opportunity for APAC collectors to own an exceptional piece of our global natural history. Shen the T. rex significantly diversifies our Hong Kong Autumn Auction sale offerings this year, following in the footsteps of two outstanding dinosaur skeletons auctioned at Christie’s in New York – STAN the T. rex, which sold for a record-breaking US$31.8 million in 2020, and most recently this May, The Raptor, which sold for US$12.4 million. We have witnessed a growing demand in the region for objects of historical significance, and we sincerely look forward to engaging museums, institutions, collectors and the general public around the world for this remarkable opportunity.”

James Hyslop, Head of Science & Natural History, Christie’s, added, “From its surging, bloodthirsty stance, to its remarkable preservation, this is one of the most scientifically studied T. rex skeletons to come to auction. After the unforgettable, record-breaking sale of STAN at Christie’s New York in 2020, it is a thrill and an immense privilege for us to be trusted with the sale of another wonderous T. rex skeleton.”

Georgina Hilton, Head of Classic Art, Christie’s Asia Pacific, added, “On both a professional and personal level, it will be an extraordinary moment for me to see, in reality, Shen the T. rex fully assembled in all its ferocious glory. Sharing this opportunity with our esteemed collectors and engaging museums and educational institutions is wonderfully exciting, and it will undoubtably bring a great learning experience for all ages when it is on show to the public at Singapore’s Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall and at the HKCEC in Hong Kong. The spotlight is clearly on dinosaurs in Hong Kong, with the skeleton’s sale following the Science Museum’s exhibition, The Big Eight – Dinosaur Revelation, and we are delighted to provide a further platform for the public to view and learn about this phenomenal part of our natural history. Shen the T. rex is sure to be an unforgettable highlight of our Autumn Auction Season.”

Facts at a glance:

- Rights to name your rex.The new owner will be able to name the skeleton as they wish.
- Shen the T. rex  measures in at a colossal 12.2 metres long, 4.6 metres high and 2.1 metres width (43ft L x 16ft H x 7ft W) and weighs 1,400 kg.
- The skeleton was unearthed in the USA, in Montana, in the Hell Creek Formation.
- Dynamically poised as though in the midst of a hunt, Shen the T. rex is in a scientifically accurate pose epitomising the T. rex’s infamous ferocity.
- Shen the T. rex would have lived during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 68 – 66 million years ago.
- The skeleton is museum standard and is 54% represented by bone density.

Meridian New Sector @ Art Basel Miami Beach 2019

Art Basel announces new sector, Meridian, for its Miami Beach show in December 5-8, 2019

Art Basel Miami Beach 2019

Art Basel announces Meridians, an ambitious new sector that will premiere at the 18th edition of the Miami Beach show from 5 through 8 December, 2019. Curated by Magalí Arriola, Meridians will present large-scale sculptures and paintings, installations, film and video projections, and live performances in the Miami Beach Convention Center’s (MBCC) new Grand Ballroom, which boasts nearly 6,000 m² (60,374 ft²) of space and is directly connected to the main exhibition halls. The new space – a result of the extensive refurbishment of the MBCC – enables Art Basel to introduce a new sector for art works that push the boundaries of a traditional art fair layout. Meridians will provide galleries with a unique opportunity to present ambitious, monumental works at the Miami Beach edition.
Magalí Arriola, curator of Meridians, said: 'I am thrilled to steer this fantastic project. Meridians brings enormous possibilities to Art Basel in Miami Beach, creating a vibrant platform for large-scale sculptures, installations and moving image works, as well as performance – which did not have a dedicated space at the fair until now.'
Noah Horowitz, Art Basel's Director Americas, said: 'We are extremely excited to introduce Meridians to our upcoming Miami Beach show this December. The sheer scale of the Grand Ballroom and its immediate proximity to the show floor give us unprecedented opportunities to present ambitious artistic projects that go far beyond the limits of the conventional art fair layout. In combination with the new floorplan and show design that we’ve introduced over the last two years – as a result of the completed renovations of the MBCC – this initiative heralds an exciting new chapter for Art Basel in Miami Beach.'

Masterpieces of German Expressionism and Twentieth Century Art
Exceptional Offerings at Grisebach’s Fall Auctions - Inaugural Auction ORANGERIE - Selected Objects From Two Millennia
At Villa Grisebach Auction House in Berlin, Germany

Villa Grisebach invites to Fasanenstrasse in Berlin to celebrate her 200th auction. From November 28 to December 1, 2012, in seven auctions, each accompanied by a separate catalogue, a total of more than 1,200 works of art with a pre-sale estimate of 17 to 23 million euros will be offered.

Masterpieces of German Expressionism take the lead with the large-format painting “Zwei Mädchen” by Otto Mueller of 1924 (€ 800,000/1,200,000), Schmidt-Rottluff’s important 1919 double portrait “Frauen am Meer” (€ 400,000/600,000), Max Pechstein’s powerful “Sonnenuntergang am Meer” of 1921 (€ 400,000/600,000), Erich Heckel’s “Blick aufs Meer” at the Flensburg Förde of 1920 (€ 300,000/400,000) and a watercolor, saturated in intensely glowing hues, by Emil Nolde, “Zwei bärtige Männer (Apostel)” (€ 300,000/400,000).

Another piece of museum quality is “Sonnenaufgang” by Otto Dix (€ 300,000/400,000), created in 1913 it can be seen as an apocalyptic vision of the First World War. Originally in the collection of the Dresden Stadtmuseum, the painting was displayed in the 1937 propaganda show “Degenerate Art.“ Since the 1960s, due to its significance, it has been included in many exhibitions in Germany and abroad.

WILLI BAUMEISTER, Kessaua statuarisch, 1954

German post-war art is represented by superb works by Willi Baumeister (“Kessaua statuarisch,” 1954,  € 250,000/300,000), Ernst Wilhelm Nay (“Motion,” 1962, € 300,000/400,000), and Emil Schumacher (“Hephatos,” 1959, € 220,000/280,000) leading over to the contemporary art section.

Here, Andy Warhol’s  large-format “Friedrich der Grosse,” entrusted to Grisebach by the Daimler AG (€ 700,000/1,000,000), and Anselm Kiefer’s “Odin and the World-Ash” (€ 400,000/600,000) take first positions.

On the occasion of Villa Grisebach’s 200th auction the renowed german auction house's program expanded once again: The new department “ORANGERIE” offers selected objects from an Attic stamnos from  the 6th century B.C. (€ 80,000/100,000) to four of Mies van der Rohe’s “MR10” tubular steel chairs of 1927 (€ 10,000/15,000). The 2012 celebrations of Prussian King Frederick the Great’s 300th birthday are reflected in this auction by the rediscovered first marble bust of his descendant, Queen Luise, created by Christian Daniel Rauch in 1804 and believed to be lost until recently (€ 100,000/150,000).

Bernd Schultz: “We are pleased to offer in our 200th auction museum-quality examples of German Expressionism that, in many cases, have not surfaced the market for several decades. The strong offerings in our post-war art section is a sign for the  growing importance of the activities in our contemporary art department. For me, a  personal pleasure is our new department, ORANGERIE, which we designed to entice our clients to collect exceptional objects from ancient times through today.”
