The Inscripted Skin: Kathy Mackey
Monash Gallery of Art, Wheelers Hill
29 April — 29 May 2005
The Inscripted Skin is a new body of work by emerging photo-media artist, Kathy Mackey, which explores the physical terrain of human skin and its interplay with jewellery and tattoos.
In this exhibition, which features 100 photographs and one video work, Kathy Mackey rewrites the skin as a mapped space that represents the transition between the interior and the exterior of the body.
Kathy Mackey says that her work, “explores the many and varied relationships that occur between human skin, metallic objects and the incised patterns that results from this interplay.
“I use photography and video to reference the body, particularly decorated skin, as not only distinguished by flesh and blood but as a series of signs, limited only by the use of context, framing and style.”
Born in Brisbane in 1961, Kathy Mackey has exhibited widely in group and solo shows since 1998. She is currently completing her PhD in visual arts practice at Griffith University. Kathy Mackey is represented by the Queensland gallery, Schubert Contemporary.
Jane Scott, Director of the MGA says, “Visitors to the MGA will be intrigued by Kathy Mackey’s compositions and the detailed landscape of each frame.”
