HAF Awards 2006 for Asian Film Projects

 

Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), co-organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) and Hong Kong Kowloon & New Territories Motion Picture Industry Association (MPIA), concluded today (March 22) and presented six awards to Asian film projects.

The three-day forum arranged over 630 meetings for Asian directors to discuss their projects with quality film financiers, producers, bankers, distributors and buyers. The number of attendees increased by 20% compared with previous year.

TDC Assistant Executive Director Raymond Yip said that the HAF has helped small and large Hong Kong and Asian film projects find global investors. "Through overseas investors, these projects will be able to broaden their international distribution network," he added.

Out of 25 film projects presented at the HAF, at least one project has closed the deal. FILMKO, a Hong Kong Film company, and Fortissimo Film Sales will invest in mainland director Zhang Yang's film project Air.

The six awards presented amounting to approximately HK$410,000 in cash and HK$200,000 value-in-kind. Sponsors of the HAF 2006 awards include the Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum, the Hubert Bals Fund, the Rome Film Festival and Technicolor Thailand Limited.

Hong Kong FILMART 10th anniversary

Over 400 exhibitors from 28 countries and regions are converging on Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART), Asia's world entertainment market, which opens today (March 20). Entering into its 10th anniversary, FILMART has become the cross-media platform for industry players to network, exchange and trade.

The show this year attracted 15% more exhibitors, including first time exhibitors from Turkey, the Bahamas and Iran. Over 4,000 buyers have already registered on-line to visit the show.

A wide variety of products and services, spanning from film, animation, digital entertainment, audio-visual equipment, post production and music productions, will be on show at the four-day event from March 20 to 23.

Over 160 film screenings & international premieres will be arranged for trade visitors.

Five seminars on "New Money in Asia", "European - Asian Co-production Partnership", "The Global Development of Media Convergence and its impact on Asian Animation", "New Development and Trends of Asian Animation Industry", "Digital Cinema & Production", and "Development of HDTV in China" will be held during the show.

A special highlight of the event this year is the launch of the inaugural Hong Kong Music Fair, in collaboration with IFPI Hong Kong. Hong Kong Music Fair is a dedicated pavilion for music industry professionals and players to explore business opportunities on copyright trading, new media application, technology transfer and cross-media partnerships.

An independent on-site survey of exhibitors and buyers will be conducted during the show to find out more on trends of the industry.

The Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) will be held concurrently with FILMART for the third time.

Co-organised by the HKTDC and Hong Kong & New Territories Motion Picture Industry Association Ltd (MPIA), HAF serves as a matchmaking platform for the film industry, helping commercially viable and promising film projects in Hong Kong and Asia locate financial and business support through co-productions or joint ventures.

Of the 25 projects selected for HAF in 2006, a number of Hong Kong directors including Stanley Kwan, Fruit Chan, and Gordon Chan Ka-seung will be pitching their projects. All selected projects will be able to contest for six HAF Awards, totaling an amassed HK$410,000 in cash and HK$200,000 of services. HAF Awards will be announced and presented in conjunction with FILMART's 10th Anniversary Celebration on March 22, 2006. .

FILMART, Hong Kong Film Awards and Hong Kong International Film Festival are the three founding events of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong, which is being held from March 20 to April 19.

David Smith is widely acclaimed as one of the giants of 20th century sculpture. David Smith’s persona, his working process, his studio, and the “fields” at his home in Bolton Landing, New York, have been the fascination of many photographers—among them Ugo Mulas, Alexander Liberman, and Irving Penn. Dan Budnik’s photography of David Smith, however, is unparalleled in its intimacy and its depth. The exhibition in Knoedler’s lower space presents a rare opportunity to view the master prints themselves—last shown together in 1974.

Dan Budnik (b. 1933), whose career as a photographer has spanned more than half a century, was the most recent recipient of the prestigious American Society of Media Photographers Honor Roll Award. His photo-essays have appeared in periodicals that include Art in America, Life, Fortune, The London Sunday Times Magazine, Look, Modern Photography, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, and Vogue.

Seeing David Smith: Photographs by Dan Budnik coincides with the comprehensive retrospective of Smith’s work at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with an introduction by E.A. Carmean, Jr. and text by Dan Budnik.

Knoedler & Company presents an exhibition of the art of Judith Rothschild (1921-1993). Points of Light, which takes its name from one of the paintings in the exhibition, focuses on Judith Rothschild’s landscape-inspired paintings and reliefs from 1956 through 1984, highlighting the artist’s work from the late 1950s and 1960s.

Born in New York City in 1921, Judith Rothschild graduated from Wellesley College in 1943 and went on to study painting with various artists, including Hans Hofmann, who had a formative influence on her. Although Judith Rothschild’s earliest work was entirely non-objective, by the mid-1950s, along with many American abstract painters both in New York and in the West, she began to reincorporate figurative imagery into her abstractions, most apparently in her landscape-related paintings. In works such as Nauset Marsh (1964), the artist uses non-local color and hazily defined forms to suggest a natural settings without actually resorting to representation. By the 1970s the artist had begun to create reliefs that included both traditional painting and collaged elements.

Judith Rothschild was never allied with one particular stylistic school, and the main influences on her work were artists such as Calder, Léger, Masson, Matisse, Miró, and Mondrian, rather than the Abstract Expressionists and Color Field painters. Her work has been the subject of several museum exhibitions since her death in 1993, including important retrospectives at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 1998 and at The State Russian Museum (Ludwig Museum at the Marble Palace), St. Petersburg in 2002.

Judith Rothschild: Points of Light is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with an essay by Justin Spring.

La Galerie d’art moderne et contemporain Sandrine Mons présente une sélection d’œuvres peintes sur bois de artiste belge Georges MEURANT

" L’important n’est pas ce que fait le peintre, c’est ce que fait sa peinture lorsqu’il a cessé de s’en occuper. Ou elle est ce qu’il en a fait, et elle n’est qu’un simple produit, ou elle instaure sa propre activité et c’est alors – et alors seulement – qu’on peut parler d’une œuvre. " Or telle est bien la sienne, dont les permutations, qui son inépuisables, nous invitent et nous contraignent à la voir faire ce qu’elle fait.

L’étonnant, c’est qu’elle paraît être et qu’elle est d’ailleurs rigoureusement définie par lui, forme après forme, couleur après couleur, qu’elle est l’œuvre la plus voulue, la plus concertée qui soit, alors qu’elle s’avère entièrement libre de ses modes d’apparition. C’est un vrai " miracle " qui s’accomplit là et qui nous éclaire sur le sens de l’art.

L’art est un " faire " (et non pas un langage, comme on nous l’a trop dit). Mais il est un faire adressé à la perception, destiné à être perçu (à être vu, entendu ou senti) et donc à entrer en interaction avec nous. Tout se joue là. L’interaction concerne la sensorialité, la réponse du corps, qui est essentiellement d’ordre biologique, qui est donc hors conscience et s’effectue en nous mais pour ainsi dire sans nous. Si bien que peindre est sans doute moins poser quelque chose que provoquer, déclencher quelque chose, comme Meurant le montre de façon magistrale en jouant, comme nul ne l’avait jamais fait, sur tous les facteurs, tous les modes et tous les degrés de contraste qui conditionnent la prégnance de la couleur.

Peindre, nous apprend-il, c’est moins " faire voir " que " voir faire " l’œuvre, la percevoir dans son activité, qu’elle soit flagrante, comme elle l’est dans son cas, ou plus ténue comme elle peut l’être ailleurs. Cela, on aurait pu, on aurait dû le voir dans les plus grandes œuvres héritées du passé, qui sont toutes actives. Il est impossible en tout cas de ne pas le voir dans la sienne. Ce qui apparaît crucial et pour la peinture et pour l’esthétique ».

Georges Meurant est né en 1948 à Bruxelles. Sa peinture, exposée dès 1966, a abandonné la représentation en 1985 et inventé en 1990 le champ figural, dont l’expérimentation se poursuit encore aujourd’hui. Georges Meurant écrit, pour se distraire de l’effort pictural, des études consacrées à des sujets d’arts contemporains ou de traditions archaïques (notamment : Abstractions aux Royaumes des Kuba, Fondation Dapper, Paris, 1987 ; Mbuti Design, Thames & Hudson, Londres-New York, 1996).
