Somerville photographer MEG BIRNBAUM attended seven New England fairs over the summer 2007, and this exhibit features a group of images the artist took with a small, inexpensive plastic camera. The black and white images have an antique quality, with blurred edges and timeless subjects such as flocks of sheep, which also betray the evidence of 2007 in nearly every frame. Meg Birnbaum’s statement explains that “fairs are a complicated balance of startling innocence and huckster sleaze,” and her photos poetically communicate that dichotomy.
