Tony Bechara: Recent Paintings
latincollector, New York
March 30 - May 26, 2006
latincollector inaugurates its 57th Street space with an exhibition of recent paintings by Tony Bechara.
Tony Bechara's paintings are unconventional, precise, formally challenging and seductive. Bechara is an artist, whose consistent style has since the seventies, expressed a dedicated interest in light, color, abstraction, form and space through the strictest of geometrical propositions.
Recent Paintings includes the artist's latest body or work and emphasizes Tony Bechara's interest in the production of complex compositions utilizing shimmering optical effects that resonate between the viewerís eye and mind. These effects are associated with psychophysiology and pattern discrimination, producing a play on visual perception. Color for Bechara, is the materialization of light. In his paintings light and its reactions manifest as form in a full color spectrum, dynamic and kinetic. Perceiving form results in an experiential illusionism, which refers to the process of seeing light travel, reflect and refract.
Tony Bechara was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. For the last 30 years his work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in venues such as The Whitney Museum, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, The Queens Museum, El Museo del Barrio, The Alternative Museum, Franklin Furnace and Rutgers University, all in New York; Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan; New Jersey State Museum, Trenton; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Connecticut. Bechara's solo exhibitions include Artists Space, Gallery Yves Arman, El Museo del Barrio, The Alternative Museum, Andre Zarre Gallery and Latin Collector Gallery, all in New York; and Apollon Galerie Die Insel and Bild & Rahmen Gallery, in Munich.
