Art Basel 2019: Parcours Sector

Now in its 10th edition, the Parcours sector this year is presented under the title 'The Impossibility of Being a Sculpture'. Samuel Leuenberger says: 'This year's Parcours proceeds from the reconsideration of inanimate objecthood, using it to open up the ways in which sculpture interacts with people within an urban context.'

Highlights include ‘The recovered manifesto of Wissam (inaudible)’ (2017) located in the Staatsarchiv by Lawrence Abu Hamdan, who was recently shortlisted for the Turner Prize 2019 and whose interest in sound and its intersection with politics is a central focus of his work. 

Installed on Münsterplatz, Dan Graham's ‘Dancing Circles’ (2018), at once sculptural and architectural, reflects and formally interacts with its environment. Germaine Kruip presents a new site-specific light installation titled ‘Diamond’ (2018-present), on display in the Vortragssaal at Kunstmuseum Basel. ‘Copper No. 32’ (2015) by Hassan Sharif, a pioneering contemporary artist in the Gulf region who introduced the apotheosis of recycled materials and mass-produced objects as sculpture, is presented at Erasmushaus, an antiquarian bookshop in central Basel.

For his long-term film project ‘The Villagers’ (2019), which will be completed and screened in September 2019, Rinus Van de Velde created 17 life-size stage sets; one of them – titled ‘Prop, Flood, Roof’ (2018) and installed in the Bau- und Verkehrsdepartement Basel-Stadt, Falkensteinerhof (Lichthof) – is featured in Parcours and is function as both a stage set and an autonomous sculpture. 

‘Untitled’ (2018) by Cathy Wilkes is a site-specific installation of sculptural objects that have been appropriated from everyday life and crafted by hand. The piece was originally installed as part of Wilkes' 2018 solo show at Yale Union, Portland, and for Parcours is presented in the Hedi Keller Saal at the Museum der Kulturen Basel.

Meridian New Sector @ Art Basel Miami Beach 2019

Art Basel announces new sector, Meridian, for its Miami Beach show in December 5-8, 2019

Art Basel announces Meridians, an ambitious new sector that will premiere at the 18th edition of the Miami Beach show from 5 through 8 December, 2019. Curated by Magalí Arriola, Meridians will present large-scale sculptures and paintings, installations, film and video projections, and live performances in the Miami Beach Convention Center’s (MBCC) new Grand Ballroom, which boasts nearly 6,000 m² (60,374 ft²) of space and is directly connected to the main exhibition halls. The new space – a result of the extensive refurbishment of the MBCC – enables Art Basel to introduce a new sector for art works that push the boundaries of a traditional art fair layout. Meridians will provide galleries with a unique opportunity to present ambitious, monumental works at the Miami Beach edition.

Meridians brings enormous possibilities to Art Basel in Miami Beach, creating a vibrant platform for large-scale sculptures, installations and moving image works, as well as performance – which did not have a dedicated space at the fair until now.'

Ayyam Gallery announces its participation in the 13th edition of Art Dubai from 20 - 23 March, 2019 at Madinat Jumeirah with a solo presentation by Samia Halaby.

Born in Jerusalem in 1936, Samia Halaby is a leading abstract painter and an influential scholar of Palestinian art. Although based in the United States since 1951, Samia Halaby is recognised as a pioneer of contemporary abstraction in the Arab world.

Samia Halaby began her career in the early 1960s, shortly after graduating from Indiana University with a MFA in Painting. While teaching at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1964, she travelled to the Eastern Mediterranean as part of a faculty research grant and studied the geometric abstraction of the region’s Islamic architecture, which has continuously factored into her work. During this time, Halaby launched a series of experiments that would initiate a career-long investigation of the materialist principles of abstraction: how reality can be represented through form.

Also influenced by the abstract movements of the Russian avant-garde, Halaby works with the conviction that new approaches to painting can redirect ways of seeing and thinking not only within the realm of aesthetics but also as contributions to technological and social advancement. This underlying notion has led to additional experiments in drawing, printmaking, computer-based kinetic art, and free-from-the-stretcher painting.

Samia Halaby has been collected by international institutions since the 1970s, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art (New York and Abu Dhabi); Yale University Art Gallery; National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Art Institute of Chicago; Cleveland Museum of Art; Institut du Monde Arabe; and the British Museum.

Selected solo shows for the artist include Ayyam Gallery Al Quoz, Dubai (2017);  Birzeit University Museum, Ramallah (2017); Beirut Exhibition Center (2015); Ayyam Gallery London (2015, 2013); Ayyam Gallery Al Quoz, Dubai (2014); Ayyam Gallery DIFC, Dubai (2011); and Ayyam Gallery Beirut (2010). She has participated in recent group shows at the School of Visual Arts, New York, USA (2017); Ayyam Gallery DIFC, Dubai (2017); 3rd Qalandiya International Biennial (2016); Darat Al Funun, Amman (2015); the National Academy of Arts, New York (2015); The Guggenheim Museum, Abu Dhabi (2014); Broadway 1602, New York (2014); and Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris (2009).

From the 1960s until the late 1980s, Samia Halaby taught at universities throughout the United States. She was the first full-time female associate professor at the Yale School of Art, a position she held for a decade. Her noteworthy contributions to American academia include a groundbreaking undergraduate studio art program that she introduced to art departments throughout the Midwest.

Samia Halaby’s writings on art have appeared in Leonardo: Journal of Arts, Sciences and Technology, Jerusalem Quarterly, and Arab Studies Quarterly, in addition to edited volumes, while her independently published survey Liberation Art of Palestine: Palestinian Paintings and Sculpture in the Second Half of the 20th Century (2002) is considered a seminal text of Palestinian art history. In 2017 Schilt Publishing released Halaby’s Drawing the Kafr Qasem Massacre while Palestine Books Inc published Growing Shapes: Aesthetic Insights of an Abstract Painter. In 2014 Booth-Clibborn Editions published the artist’s second monograph, Samia Halaby: Five Decades of Painting and Innovation.

Berliner Liste 2009 fur junge Galerien

Berliner Liste 09 als experimenteller Ort für junge Galerien und aktuelle Kunst

Berlin gehört zu den pulsierendsten Kunstzentren der Welt. Seit Jahren begegnen sich hier junge Künstler aller Stilrichtungen, um jenseits des Establishment des weltweiten Kunstmarktes nach neuen Konzepten und unkonventionellen Wegen zu suchen. Für diese Szene steht die Berliner Liste; als innovative Entdecker-Messe bildet sie seit ihrer Gründung vor sechs Jahren durch den Berliner Galeristen Wolfram Völcker eine Plattform für junge Arbeiten und frische, zeitgenössische Kunst. Die Berliner Liste gibt Newcomern eine Chance. Die unkomplizierte und kommunikative Atmosphäre der Messe lässt einen lebendigen Austausch zwischen Künstlern, Galerien und dem interessierten Publikum entstehen. Mit diesem Konzept hat sich die Berliner Liste seit ihrem Jubiläumserfolg von 2008 mit rund 15.000 Besuchern als zweitgrößte Kunstmesse Berlins nach dem Art Forum etablieren können. 

Berliner Liste 09 an neuem Standort hinter Glas Zum besonderen Profil der Berliner Liste gehört auch der jährlich wechselnde, stets außergewöhnliche Standort. In jedem Jahr wird ein anderer Ort von der Messe mit Leben gefüllt und der Öffentlichkeit bekannt gemacht. In den Vorjahren zählten bereits das Vitra Design Museum und der Postbahnhof am Gleisdreieck zu den ausgewählten Ausstellungsorten. Zum 5jährigen Jubiläum 2008 zog die Berliner Liste in das leer stehende ehemalige Luxushotel Haus Cumberland am Kurfürstendamm. In diesem Jahr wird die Messe das Palais am Tiergarten beziehen, einen neuen, nahezu transparenten Glas- und Backsteinbau, der für die Foto- und Lichtkunst der Berliner Liste 2009 den idealen Rahmen bilden wird. Auf vier Etagen lädt die Berliner Liste hier zum Flanieren und Entdecken des aktuellen Kunstschaffens ein sowie zum Dialog mit Künstlern und Galeristen. Im fünften Stock wird eine Lounge mit Dance Floor die entspannte und kreative Atmosphäre der Messe unterstreichen. Nicht zuletzt ist auch das Art Forum von diesem zentral am Reichpietschufer in unmittelbarer Nähe der Nationalgalerie gelegenen Gebäude in wenigen Minuten mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln zu erreichen. 

Berliner Liste 09 als Tor nach Osteuropa Die diesjährige Berliner Liste präsentiert sich weitaus internationaler als bisher; am neuen Standort im Palais am Tiergarten werden 60 Galerien aus 14 Ländern ihre vielversprechendsten künstlerischen Talente Sammlern, Kuratoren, Kunstinteressierten und Journalisten aus aller Welt vorstellen. Die Hälfte der ausstellenden Galerien stammt dabei Deutschland, die übrigen kommen aus dem europäischen Ausland, den USA und Südkorea. In diesem Jahr nimmt die Berliner Liste 2009 die osteuropäische Kunstszene in den Focus: So wird auch dieses Jahr wieder die Anaid Gallery aus Rumänien dabei sein. Erstmals reisen aus Osteuropa die Galerie Krokus und die Photon Gallery aus Slowenien an. Die Gallery Bastejs aus Lettland wird ebenso die neuesten Strömungen und Tendenzen der Kunst aus Lettland präsentieren. Mit der expliziten Auswahl vieler osteuropäischer Galerien will die Berliner Liste der speziellen historischen und geografischen Situation Berlins auf der Schnittstelle zwischen Ost und West gerecht werden. Ein weiterer chwerpunkt liegt auch in diesem Jahr auf aktueller Kunst aus Spanien. 

Fotografie auf der Berliner Liste 09 Anlässlich ihres fünfjährigen Jubiläums hat die Berliner Liste 2008 ihr Angebot um zwei neue Abteilungen erweitert. In der Sektion „Fotografie” zeigten 10 Galerien erstmals gebündelt ausschließlich Fotografie. „Kunst seit 1960“ öffnete die Berliner Liste, um weitere Galerien und anspruchsvolle Sammler einzuführen. Beide Abteilungen haben großen Zuspruch des Fachpublikums erfahren. Zum 6. Mal bietet die Berliner Liste diesen Herbst eine Plattform, um risikolos experimentieren zu können und Entdeckungen zu machen – und zwar nicht nur neue Orte, sondern auch aufstrebende Künstler und aktuelle Tendenzen.
