Canon EOS D2000 Professional Digital Camera

Canon EOS D2000 Professional Digital Camera

Canon has announced the release in April of the EOS D2000 professional digital camera, designed specifically for photojournalism and related fields.

Developed as a successor to the EOS DCS3, the Canon EOS D2000 features a more compact body (18% smaller than the EOS DCS3) that is easier to carry and operate, and a newly developed 2 million pixel CCD for much greater accuracy in colour reproduction.

The EOS D2000 digital camera provides the EOS user with the familiar EOS feel, by retaining the mode settings and dial operation of the EOS-1N, and by accepting the full range of over 50 EOS interchangeable EF lenses without the need for an adaptor.

A 1.8-inch colour LCD monitor in the camera's back panel enables the user to verify each shot immediately after taking it. In addition, to meet the requirements of the professional photographer, the camera provides rapid continuous shooting capability of up to 15 frames at 3.5 frames per second, a removable Ni-Cd rechargeable battery (sold separately), and a IEEE 1394 Firewire interface for high-speed image transfer, as well as many other advanced features.

Since 1995, Canon has collaborated with Eastman Kodak Co., USA, in developing and marketing the EOS DCS series of professional-level digital cameras. This series combines the body of Canon's EOS-1N AF single-lens reflex camera with the Kodak digital camera back.

Canon EOS D2000 - Compact Body
The exterior of the EOS DCS series - in which the camera unit and digital unit were clearly distinguishable - has been redesigned using exterior trim components that incorporate the camera and digital units into one. The result is a camera that is 38 mm lower and 7 mm slimmer than the EOS DCS3 (for an overall size reduction of 18%), as well as a refined design. Weighing only 1650g, it is only marginally heavier than an EOS-1N or EOS1NRS with Power Drive Booster, so offers easy handling and carrying to meet the demands of journalists and other professional users.

Canon EOS D2000 - High Image Quality
For high-quality image recording the newly developed 2-million-pixel CCD provides more natural colour reproduction than the 1.3-million-pixel CCD of the EOS DCS 3. In addition, a removable infrared low-pass filter included between the camera mount and mirror cuts infra-red light and prevents image reddening. This also reduces false colours that can occur when bright conditions cause the CCD to perceive colours at values other than their actual.

Canon EOS D2000 - EOS Operating Features
The D2000 retains the operating functionality of the EOS-1N, the most advanced model in the Canon EOS series of autofocusing single-lens reflex cameras. It is compatible with the full range of over 50 Canon EF lenses, from the 14mm ultra wide-angle lens to the 1200mm super-telephoto lens. This enables photographers using silver-emulsion cameras to make the transition to digital photography easily.

Canon EOS D2000 - Enhanced Ease of Use
Ease of use has been greatly enhanced in response to suggestions from EOS DCS3 users by incorporating the following features:

- 1.8-inch colour LCD monitor to display images immediately after shooting.
- High-speed continuous shooting of up to 15 frames at 3.5 frames per second.
- Rechargeable Ni-Cad battery easily replaceable by the user (available separately).
- New viewfinder that provides a large display of the entire image frame.

Canon EOS D2000 - Other Features
Other features on the EOS D2000 include:

- Next-generation IEEE-1394 Firewire interface for high-speed data transfer of photo images.
- Compatibility with the Canon 220EX/380EX Speedlites for the EOS series, with the E-TTL automatic flash exposure compensation system for more natural flash shots and accurate exposure in very dark or backlit conditions.
- Two PCMCIA Type II card slots for image recording and interface use.
