Canon EOS 5DS & 5DS R DSLR Features

Canon EOS 5DS & 5DS R DSLR Features

Canon EOS 5Ds
Canon EOS 5Ds

Canon EOS 5Ds R
Canon EOS 5DsR

Setting a new benchmark for full-frame cameras, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R combine fast, instinctive DSLR handling with the newly-developed 50.6 MP CMOS sensor, providing the flexibility to shoot a wide range of scenes and subjects, making it ideal for large format mediums, such as advertising billboards and magazine covers, where every pixel matters. The sensor’s advanced architecture provides ISO 100-6400 sensitivity, expandable to 50-12800, ensuring high quality images with low noise, accurate colours and wide dynamic range. For added flexibility, the cameras’ resolution enables three new in-camera crop shooting modes – 1.3x, 1.6x and 1:1. Visible through the viewfinder, the crop modes deliver outstanding results, with stills at 19 MP even when cropped to 1.6x.

Built to withstand the most demanding shoots, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R’s dual DIGIC 6 processors provide the rapid performance and responsiveness required to deliver first-class images with exceptional colour reproduction. Both processors are designed to comfortably manage huge levels of image data from the 50.6 MP sensor, whilst simultaneously reducing image noise and providing the freedom to shoot at five frames per second.

Created to ensure every detail of your exquisite landscape or high-fashion studio shoot is in focus, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R feature an advanced 61-point AF system, with 41 cross-type points, delivering incredible levels of image sharpness and accuracy across the frame. Both cameras comfortably maintain focus with moving subjects, using EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition AF (iTR) to track both faces and colour. To reduce image blur, Canon’s Mirror Vibration Control System uses cams to drive the cameras’ mirror up and down in a highly controlled fashion, avoiding all sudden stops and softening the shutter-release sound.

Additionally, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R’s 150k pixel RGB+IR metering sensor with Flicker Detection ensures images can be captured with consistent and accurate exposures under varying lighting scenarios, including florescent.

Putting unrivalled image quality at your fingertips, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R include a number of customisable modes and settings to ensure stunning results every time. A new Fine Detail Picture Style maximises the level of detail that can be achieved from the sensor, enabling advanced sharpness adjustment without the need for editing software.

Popular creative modes, including Multiple Exposure and HDR, provide instant, in-camera creativity, while a built-in timer allows you to shoot over long periods and create stunning time lapse videos, without being tied to the camera or needing advanced software and excessive kit.

The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R have been expertly constructed to allow you to operate quickly, regardless of the environment you’re shooting in. The 100% viewfinder with electronic overlay makes framing vital shots easy and can be customised to your preferred style. The large, 8.11cm (3.2”) Clear View II LCD screen, with an anti-reflective structure, minimises reflection or glare when reviewing shots and also acts as a visual and accessible dashboard of the most commonly used settings. The cameras’ new Custom Quick Control screen means that the type, size and position of icons are also easily customisable to the user or shooting scenario.

Both cameras utilise Canon’s iconic design DNA – a highly durable body constructed from high-grade magnesium alloy to provide weather resilient shooting – ideal for landscape photographers who are dedicated to getting the perfect shot, whatever the weather.

When nothing but the absolute maximum level of detail possible will do, the EOS 5DS R features a low pass cancellation filter to ensure the sharpest possible results. Great for landscape photographers, where patterns are organic, the camera’s low pass cancellation filter produces the stunning level of detail required to turn a great shot into an incredible shot.

The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R are compatible with Canon’s extensive EF lens range.

EOS 5DS Key features:

- 50.6 MP CMOS sensor with dual DIGIC 6 processors
- 150K Pixel RGB+IR Metering Sensor
- Up to 5.0 Frames Per Second
- 61-point AF
- Cropped Shooting

EOS 5DS R also includes:

ZUIKO DIGITAL interchangeable lenses are specifically designed to maximize the performance potential of the image sensors in “Four-Thirds System” digital SLR cameras. Newly announced ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F4.0–5.6 lens is a lightweight, ultra-compact telephoto zoom lens that offers outstanding value.

ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F4.0–5.6 is the lightest (220g) and smallest lens in its class*, and boasts the shortest minimum shooting distance (0.9m). Its wide zoom range is equivalent to 80–300mm on a 35mm camera, and its Four-Thirds System design assures outstanding portability that makes interchangeable lens photography easier. (*) as an interchangeable telephoto zoom lens covering telephoto ranges over 200mm: 35mm equivalent (as of November 13th, 2006, by Olympus study)

Main Features

・ Lightweight and Ultra-Compact Design
ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 uses ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and high-performance glass elements and an optimized zoom range to ensure outstanding performance and portability. Packing the equivalent of 300mm telephoto power in a barrel only 72mm long, and weighing just 220g, it makes it easy to enjoy true telephoto shooting in the field. The lens’s 3.8x zoom covers a wide range of focal lengths, and offers performance equivalent to 80-300mm on a 35mm camera.

・ Excellent Close-Focusing Capability
An inner focusing system assures that lens length remains constant, and provides close focusing from 90cm at any focal length.

Other Features

・ Superior Imaging Characteristics
ED and high refractive index glass elements are used to minimize chromatic aberration, coma flare, and image curvature. Sharp, high-contrast imaging is achieved at the outer periphery of the lens at all focal lengths. Advanced technologies for high image quality include multi-coating to reduce ghosting and flaring in backlight, and the use of a circular iris to achieve smooth, soft, background defocusing.

・ Filter Support
A non-rotating mount ensures that filters do not rotate when the lens is focused, making it much easier to shoot when using polarizing filters.

The ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 is scheduled to go on sale in Japan on November 23, 2006.

- Proprietary Wide 3-Point AF System with center cross-hair trigger sensor gives increased focusing confidence.
- Multi-dimensional Predictive Focus Control maintains accurate focusing on moving subjects.
- ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) flash metering automatically fine-tunes flash exposure when photographing.
- Full-Auto Program takes care of all focus and exposure.
- Versatile exposure modes (P, A, S, M) for full photographic expression.
- Subject Program Selection for great photos in any situation.
- The spherical acute matte focusing screen maintains the brightness of the viewfinder and makes focusing easier.

Minolta Dynax 40 SLR Camera Features:

Design that's Fresh and Familiar
The first thing the strikes you is the design: high-contrast silver and black give the Dynax 40 that highlights the SLR camera's reliability and dependability. The overall effect produces a soft, pleasing image -a camera that actively welcomes you to pick it up and start shooting off rolls of film.

Multi-dimensional Predictive Focus Control
Like the name suggests, this function keeps a clear focus on fast-moving subjects until you're ready to shoot, predicting exactly where a moving subject is going to be at the moment of shutter-release and making certain that the focus is razor sharp.

ADI flash metering
When using a D series lens, ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) metering(1) ensures proper flash exposures regardless of background or subject reflectance.
(1) When using a dedicated flash unit: 5600HS(D), 3600HS(D) or 2500(D)

Full-Auto Program (P) Mode
Simply select the green-colored P Mode on the selection dial, and the camera handles everything for you. The Dynax 40 focuses perfectly on the subject and adjusts exposure automatically. The flash unit pops up automatically when needed.

Versatile Exposure Modes
The Dynax 40 offers four exposure modes: P (programmed AE), A (aperture priority), S (shutter priority) and M (manual) exposure modes that ensure photographs convey the user's intentions perfectly every time the shutter is pressed.

Subject Program Selection for All Photo Situations
Choose the appropriate icon and the desired exposure setting, and the Dynax 40 does all the work while you have all the fun! The following 5 pre-programmed modes allow you to shoot a particular scene beautifully with the touch of a dial.

Portrait Mode creates portraits with emotional power. By blurring the background while keeping the subject in sharp focus, this mode creates dramatic portrait shots.

Landscape Mode controls the depth of field, putting both a subject in the foreground and scenery in the background in clear focus and sharp detail.

Close-Up Mode lets you take dramatic close-ups of small subjects, such as flowers. This mode captures subject details while keeping distracting backgrounds out of focus.

Sports Action Mode is the best choice for shooting a moving object. Super-fast continuous AF and high shutter speeds freeze a subject and capture clear, sharp detail.

Night Portrait Mode adds greater expression to shots taken at night or with sunset backgrounds by using the flash and a longer exposure to reduce background darkness and capture a greater amount of detail.

Spherical Acute Matte
Like its more expensive counterparts, the Dynax 40 has a Spherical Acute Matte focusing screen that enhances the brightness of the viewfinder and makes focusing easier. Viewer magnification has been rated to 0.75X.

Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV film scanner

Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV film scanner

Konica Minolta Photo Imaging introduces the DiMAGE Scan Dual IV film scanner as a successor model of their already worldwide-popular DiMAGE Scan Dual III. The new DiMAGE Scan Dual IV incorporates a number of features found only on high-end scanners, which make operation easy and faithfully reproduce film images into digital in less work time. Moreover, it uses a new 3200 dpi CCD to deliver higher image quality and yet it is still affordably priced for a 35 mm/Advanced Photo System film scanner.

The Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV delivers high image quality that will satisfy photo enthusiasts by not only adopting a new high performance 3-line color 3200 dpi CCD, but also by incorporating an advanced optical system specifically designed for film scanning consisting of a film scanner lens that condenses the technology of Konica Minolta, and an auto focusing system that is not available in flatbed scanners.

With a 16-bit A/D conversion and a wide dynamic range of 4.8, the DiMAGE Scan Dual IV faithfully reproduces the rich variations in tone from light to dark of the original film image. Moreover, Multi-sample Scanning improves the scan data by reducing random noise.

Users can also select areas for correction, and adjust the processing level.
- Pixel Polish
Pixel Polish brings various corrective features for matching the overall image to specific elements in the picture such as person, night scene, trees and sky, in addition to allowing the user to restore faded colors, or correcting backlit and under/over exposure.
- Digital Grain Dissolver
Digital Grain Dissolver reduces the affect of grain in color film without sacrificing original image detail.

Thanks to improved sequences in the scanning process and the USB2.0 interface, high speed operation including image transfer and display is possible only 21 seconds per image even at the highest resolution of 3200 dpi.
The DiMAGE Scan Dual IV's high-speed auto focus with an upgraded algorithm and improved motor drive control allows the scanner to be focused quickly onto the center or a selected point within the image.

The Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV makes operation easier and shortens work time by incorporating the Batch Scan and the Quick Scan function. Batch Scan Utility enables continuous scanning under user-set optical input resolution, exposure and Image correction, so scan work is more efficient. Olympus OM-2000 35mm SLR camera - Features & Specifications

Olympus OM-2000 35mm SLR camera

The convenience of an automated camera does not always leave room for individual expression. Those who look for creative freedom will find the new OM2000 a perfect companion to discover the joys of artistry and personal satisfaction full manual photography can bring. The OM2000 brings the quality and flexibility of SLR performance within affordable reach.

Full Manual Control SLR
Elegant, affordable, simple, yet uncompromising in quality, the OM2000 is a rugged, mechanical-shutter, 35mm SLR that continues the Olympus OM-system series tradition of putting the photographer's judgment first. The OM2000 provides total manual control over all the variables: aperture, shutter speed and focus. In the hands of a creative student or serious photographer the OM2000's mechanical excellence, aided by a precision Olympus Zuiko lens, can faithfully capture images on film just as the photographer conceived them.

Professional Look and Feel
The sturdy qualities of this camera start with the professional feel of its robust, die-cast aluminum body, with the top and bottom finished in a very durable ternary-compound alloy made of nickel, copper and zinc. Its inner beauty resides in the all-metal, precision focal plane shutter assembly. Covering the range from 1 second to 1/2000 second, the OM2000's mechanical shutter is always ready since it does not require battery power.

There is also a bulb setting and cable release for extended exposures in low light and even capturing the night sky.

Precise Exposure Control
Light is one of the most critical factors in photography, and accurate measurement of light is critical in determining exposure values. The manual OM2000 SLR features both spot metering and center-weighted average metering. With two systems available, a photographer can pick the appropriate one for a wide range of lighting conditions, including difficult backlit scenes. The choice also offers the freedom of creating striking effects with any combination of lens aperture and shutter speed. Switching between the two exposure systems is a simple matter of moving a lever.

Red and green LED indicators in the viewfinder verify battery condition and make it easy to set exposure value correctly. Pressing the spot metering selector on the OM2000 causes an orange LED to show in the viewfinder and makes a precise reading of light in the spot circle—the central 2% of the frame.

The viewfinder of the OM2000 uses a microprism split-image matter focusing screen. In addition to making it easier to see subjects and frame shots, the screen offers exceptional clarity and contrast. An optional dioptric lens offers -3 to +1 diopters of correction, to assure all photographers of optimum viewfinder image sharpness.

Compatible with OM System Lenses
Central to all creative decisions is the choice of which lens to use. The OM2000 uses interchangeable Zuiko lenses. These fit securely to the sturdy, metal OM mount and can be changed quickly. The compact, lightweight S Zuiko 35-70mm f3.5-4.8 lens comes with the OM2000 kit. A compact alternative is one Zuiko 70-210mm f4.5-5.6 one-touch zoom lens that makes telephoto shooting easy.

Olympus Zuiko lenses are equipped with a preview button. Accurate results are simplified by the preview function. When the preview button, which is located on the side of the lens, is pressed the current aperture is set so the depth of field can be checked in the viewfinder.

An OM2000 body is a welcome addition for owners of other OM camera models since the OM2000 accepts most OM system lenses.

Flash Photography Options
For flash photography, the OM2000 offers X-synchronization at any shutter speed up to 1/125 of a second. An optional Olympus S20 slim-line electronic flash unit boasts a guide number of 66 (ISO 100/ft), 20 (IS) 100/m), and offers auto flash performance at f2.8 and F5.6. It also comes with a wide adapter that provides flash coverage up to 24mm wide-angle shots.

Other Features
The OM2000 accommodates a wide variety of film types and speeds from ISO 25 to ISO 3200, with film speeds manually selected in 1/3 step increments. Film advance is by a convenient lever that also locks the shutter button between film-frame advances.

Interesting and unusual multiple exposures of two or more images on a single frame can also be made, if desired. Simply set the multi-exposure lever to the ON position, and you can cock the shutter without advancing the film. A self-timer is also included, providing up to about 10 seconds of shutter-trip delay.

Suggested list price of the OM2000 is $418.00

Canon EOS D2000 Professional Digital Camera

Canon EOS D2000 Professional Digital Camera

Canon has announced the release in April of the EOS D2000 professional digital camera, designed specifically for photojournalism and related fields.

Developed as a successor to the EOS DCS3, the Canon EOS D2000 features a more compact body (18% smaller than the EOS DCS3) that is easier to carry and operate, and a newly developed 2 million pixel CCD for much greater accuracy in colour reproduction.

The EOS D2000 digital camera provides the EOS user with the familiar EOS feel, by retaining the mode settings and dial operation of the EOS-1N, and by accepting the full range of over 50 EOS interchangeable EF lenses without the need for an adaptor.

A 1.8-inch colour LCD monitor in the camera's back panel enables the user to verify each shot immediately after taking it. In addition, to meet the requirements of the professional photographer, the camera provides rapid continuous shooting capability of up to 15 frames at 3.5 frames per second, a removable Ni-Cd rechargeable battery (sold separately), and a IEEE 1394 Firewire interface for high-speed image transfer, as well as many other advanced features.

Since 1995, Canon has collaborated with Eastman Kodak Co., USA, in developing and marketing the EOS DCS series of professional-level digital cameras. This series combines the body of Canon's EOS-1N AF single-lens reflex camera with the Kodak digital camera back.

Canon EOS D2000 - Compact Body
The exterior of the EOS DCS series - in which the camera unit and digital unit were clearly distinguishable - has been redesigned using exterior trim components that incorporate the camera and digital units into one. The result is a camera that is 38 mm lower and 7 mm slimmer than the EOS DCS3 (for an overall size reduction of 18%), as well as a refined design. Weighing only 1650g, it is only marginally heavier than an EOS-1N or EOS1NRS with Power Drive Booster, so offers easy handling and carrying to meet the demands of journalists and other professional users.

Canon EOS D2000 - High Image Quality
For high-quality image recording the newly developed 2-million-pixel CCD provides more natural colour reproduction than the 1.3-million-pixel CCD of the EOS DCS 3. In addition, a removable infrared low-pass filter included between the camera mount and mirror cuts infra-red light and prevents image reddening. This also reduces false colours that can occur when bright conditions cause the CCD to perceive colours at values other than their actual.

Canon EOS D2000 - EOS Operating Features
The D2000 retains the operating functionality of the EOS-1N, the most advanced model in the Canon EOS series of autofocusing single-lens reflex cameras. It is compatible with the full range of over 50 Canon EF lenses, from the 14mm ultra wide-angle lens to the 1200mm super-telephoto lens. This enables photographers using silver-emulsion cameras to make the transition to digital photography easily.

Canon EOS D2000 - Enhanced Ease of Use
Ease of use has been greatly enhanced in response to suggestions from EOS DCS3 users by incorporating the following features:

- 1.8-inch colour LCD monitor to display images immediately after shooting.
- High-speed continuous shooting of up to 15 frames at 3.5 frames per second.
- Rechargeable Ni-Cad battery easily replaceable by the user (available separately).
- New viewfinder that provides a large display of the entire image frame.

Canon EOS D2000 - Other Features
Other features on the EOS D2000 include:

- Next-generation IEEE-1394 Firewire interface for high-speed data transfer of photo images.
- Compatibility with the Canon 220EX/380EX Speedlites for the EOS series, with the E-TTL automatic flash exposure compensation system for more natural flash shots and accurate exposure in very dark or backlit conditions.
- Two PCMCIA Type II card slots for image recording and interface use.

Canon IXUS Z70 APS Compact Camera

Canon IXUS Z70 APS Camera

Canon has launched another Advanced Photo System camera to enhance its IXUS range, the Canon IXUS Z70. Based on the well know IXUS design, the stainless steel body and compact size of the IXUS Z70 are combined with a 3x zoom lens and light guide flash.

Measuring just 95 x 64.5 x 32mm, the Canon IXUS Z70 is marginally bigger than the IXUS so that it can incorporate the high quality 23-69mm f/4.5-9.9 with GMo aspherical lenses (equivalent to 29 to 87 on a 35mm camera).

Canon IXUS Z70 - Light Guide Flash
The new Light guide flash system introduced for the first time on the IXUS Z70 is more efficient than normal flash systems and, being smaller, is incorporated into the sleek design of the camera to slide out automatically when the camera is turned on.

Uniform illumination is provided by using a light tube, acrylic light guide and a small reflection umbrella at the back of the flash. As light is dispersed to match the photographic field, the ratio of lost light is improved by about 35%. As a result, a more consistently lit subject area is obtained.

Additionally, miniaturisation is possible because there is no need for a fresnel lens or large reflection umbrella. As the flash unit slides out from the main body of the camera, the distance between flash and lens is increased, further reducing red-eye effect.

Canon IXUS Z70 - Advanced Photo System (APS)
APS features on the IXUS Z70 include mid roll film change and print quantity setting. The print quantity setting enables users to select the number of prints of each shots (0 to 9) either before or after taking the picture. Using this feature, the number of extra prints of a picture can be recorded immediately so the photographer does not have to remember how many are required.

Other APS features include print format selection, date/title back printing, drop-in loading and IX data exchange which records eleven types of photographic data on each frame to ensure consistently high picture quality.

Canon IXUS Z70 - Three Point Auto Focus
The hybrid auto focus system combines the advantages of infra-red auto focus, which works well at close range and in low light, with passive autofocus which can operate through glass and is highly accurate at longer distances.

The system also incorporates a three point distance measuring system to give sharp images from wide angle through to telephoto. Five infra-red beams change the illumination angle according to zoom position of the lens so that correct focus is almost guaranteed.

Other features incorporated are five flash modes - including red-eye reduction and auto back-lit -, +1.5 automatic exposure compensation and a minimum focusing distance of just 60cm.

The Canon IXUS Z70 is available from April at a price of £260 in UK.

And that makes the latest addition the IS Series the clear answer for amateurs who are serious about both photography and fun.

MAIN FEATURES

Compact, lightweight SLR with a built-in zoom lens
The Olympus IS-200 features a built-in, high-resolution 4x zoom lens, while its L-shaped design reflects a relentless pursuit of optimal handling and holding balance. Not only is operation easy, but the new model is compact and lightweight, measuring just 123 x 88 x 115 mm and weighing only 640g.

Integrated lens cap
The Olympus IS-200 is the first SLR with an integrated lens cap that opens automatically when the power is turned on.

High-resolution 28-110 mm 4x zoom lens
Quickly and easily, the zooming lever covers a broad range of 28-110 mm. The 28 mm setting offers full wide-angle photography for outstanding results in indoor scenes, group portraits, expansive landscapes and architectural shots. And the telephoto settings up to 110 mm are perfect for striking portraits and natural-looking candid photography. For even greater telephoto possibilities, the optional teleconverter extends the maximum focal length to 180 mm.

Twin Flash with GN18 power
In addition to its GN14 flashtube for wide-angle and normal focal lengths, the IS-200 has a GN18 flashtube for telephoto shots. This solution offers a flash range of 4.5m with ISO100 color negative film and 9.0m with ISO400. The automatic changeover from one flashtube to the other is determined automatically according to the focal length and distance to the subject.

Large-diameter glass aspherical lens
The large-diameter aspherical glass lens delivers high-quality images with less distortion all the way to the edge of the frame, even at the 28 mm wide-angle setting. Along with ensuring outstanding quality, the lens design accounts for the compactness of the optical system.

Direct Mode Select Button
By simply pressing the Direct Mode Select Button, photographers can explore the advantages of SLR performance, confident that the results will be all that they want. The icons are easy to understand, and there are four modes suited to the range of situations.

・ Stop Action Mode: To freeze fast moving subjects, the camera automatically picks the fastest shutter speed up to 1/2000 sec.

・ Portrait Mode: With the largest available aperture selected automatically, the subject remains in sharp focus while the background is blurred.

・ Night Scene Mode: While the flash captures the subject in the foreground, the shutter stays open as long as 4 sec. to record the night scenery in the background.

・ Landscape Mode: Ideal for landscapes and group portraits with an interesting background, this mode maximizes the depth of field by automatically picking the smallest aperture.

Creative Functions
Photographers who want to capture every nuance of a scene will appreciate the functions that offer an optimal combination of shutter speed and aperture for every lighting situation.

・ Aperture-Preferred AE: Complete control over the aperture range lets photographers select the F-stop they want, from the widest opening of F4.5-5.6 to the minimum of F22.

・ Spot Metering: An Olympus innovation pioneered with the OM-4 SLR, one-touch Spot Metering helps photographers ensure that the exposure reading is accurate for a particular part of the frame. It is particularly useful when there is backlighting or the lighting is unusually complicated.

・ Long Time Mode: The Long Time Mode is ideal for creative photography in nighttime scenes that are difficult to capture in a programmed mode-for example, the flow of automobile taillights or fireworks against a dark sky. With the aperture locked at F8, the photographer can choose from shutter speeds of 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30 and 60 sec. The shutter can be triggered from a distance with the optional Remote Control RC-200.

Versatile flash modes
To make sure that flash photographs come out right, the IS-200's Intelligent Variable-Power Flash system checks the distance to the subject and automatically sets the appropriate flash intensity and aperture setting.

・ Auto: In low light or backlighting, the flash fires automatically, delivering the appropriate illumination for a correct exposure.
・ Redeye Reduction: This mode minimizes the redeye effect which spoils many flash portraits taken in low light. To make the subject's iris contract, a series of lower-powered pre-flashes is triggered before the main flash fires.
・ Fill-in: The flash fires every time in this mode. It is especially helpful when a photographer wants a natural look without the harsh shadows created by strong sunlight.

Other features

・ Built-in dioptric correction: Dioptric correction of -2 to +1 is built in to compensate for any eyesight problems.

・ Optional accessories for enhanced creative control: IS/L Lens C-180 H.Q. Converter 1.7x For full telephoto photography, the compact and lightweight teleconverter extends the maximum focal length to 180 mm. It measures just 56 x 56mm, and it weighs only 100g.

・  Remote Control RC-200 The remote control triggers the shutter from as far as 5m from straight ahead of the subject or from 3.5 m at a 50degrees angle on either side.

Olympus µ [mju:]-II Compact Camera

The Olympus µ [mju:]-II Compact Camera

Olympus µ [mju:]-II Compact Camera
(c) Olympus

Olympus introduces the µ [mju:]-II compact camera. Superbly styled, ultra-compact and lightweight, the new high- performance model features a 35mm lens with a large aperture of F2.8. The Olympus µ [mju:]-II is the culmination of a relentless pursuit of compactness and easy operation in the 35mm format. Incorporating a wide range of innovations, this development concept accounts for the new model's exceptionally trim lines and weight. Even with its 35mm large-aperture F 2.8 lens, the µ[mju:]-II measures only 108 (W) x 59 (H) x 37 (D) mm and weighs just 135g. Along with the convenience of this visibly different design, it has the outstanding handling, superior image quality and sophisticated elegance that makes a photographer want to keep it close at hand. It is a combination that pushes the limits of the compact camera. This is clearly the next best-seller in the making-the model with more of everything that makes a camera satisfying to use and to own.

Advanced design

Even though the Olympus µ [mju:]-II is small enough to fit comfortably into one hand, its miniaturization has not impaired performance, reliability, easy operation, handling or stable balance in any way or form.

Equally important, its extra-bright F2.8 lens opens up shooting possibilities that were beyond the capabilities of previous compact cameras. In dim light, photographers can capture the nuances of ambient conditions indoors or at dusk. They can also count on the aspherical lens for visibly different image quality.

Ensuring accuracy at any point from Macro shots at 35cm to infinity, the AF unit has the precision of a three-point focusing system and 414-step measurement. The AF module also contributes to overall miniaturization with the space efficiency of the prism's special shape.

The new Auto Color-Balancing flash (AC-B) eliminates the unnatural cast of pictures taken in fluorescent or other artificial light. When artificial light is detected, it fires automatically to ensure the colors are clear and lifelike. A number of state-of-the-art technologies have also been utilized to develop a soft flash function that prevents over-exposure.

Not only are the contours stylish and sophisticated, but the body size and weight have also been reduced by innovations such as the new shaft drive mechanism which uses a single motor for film advance/rewind. Handling has been perfected by touches such as a sliding lens barrier that moves over to protect the flash. There is also a high-magnification real-image viewfinder that simplifies composition, while the all-weather casing takes the worry out of photography on a rainy day.

Main Features

Stylish, compact and lightweight
With its flowing contours and stylish looks, the Olympus µ [mju:]-II has the sophisticated lines that people are looking for. This ultra-compact camera measures 108(W) x 59 (H) x 37 (D) mm and weighs only 135g. Just one example of this harmonization of form and function is the lens barrier that slides all the way over to cover the flash, eliminating the need to keep the camera in a case.

High-resolution 35mm F2.8 lens
The bright F2.8 lens extends the range of creative possibilities beyond the capabilities of any other compact camera on the market. Even in relatively dim light indoors or at dusk, the large aperture can capture the nuances of available light. The optical configuration has four elements in four groups and uses an aspherical lens to improve image quality.

New Intelligent Variable Power Flash System-employing new Auto Color-Balancing Flash
Several sensors are used to detect lighting information and relay it to the new Intelligent Variable Power Flash system. Ensuring an ideal color balance and lifelike results, the Auto Color-Balancing Flash system is the world's first system of its kind. The flash fires automatically when a sensor detects the wavelength of fluorescent or other artificial lighting that may result in an unnatural cast. The intelligent system's soft flash capability also prevents over-exposure, while the improved Auto mode triggers the flash automatically in dim light or backlit situations (for example, when sunlight is filtered through trees).

AF module with special prism
With the special shape of the exclusive prism that receives light, the AF module has been positioned to contribute to the overall miniaturization of the body. Employing a three-point focusing system with 414 steps, the AF unit delivers outstanding performance, especially from a camera with a large-aperture lens.

Versatile flash modes
The new Intelligent Variable-Power Flash's six modes deliver high-quality flash pictures.
- Auto: In low light and backlit situations, the flash fires automatically to ensure that the illumination is appropriate. When fluorescent or other artificial light is detected, the new Auto Color-Balancing Flash takes over to create lifelike colors.
- Red-Eye Reducing Auto: The red-eye -a common problem with flash portraits-is reduced by a series of pre-flashes emitted before the main flash fires. (Same as Auto otherwise)
- Fill-in: Ideal for high-contrast situations, the flash always fires in this mode, eliminating the shadows caused by strong sunlight.
- Flash Off: This mode is the answer when flash photography is prohibited. It is also ideal for capturing a natural ambience.
- Night Scene: The intensity of the flash is determined by the foreground, while the length of the exposure is set according to the backdrop. Slowing the shutter speed to as long as 4 sec., this mode captures both the subject in the foreground and the night-time scenery.
- Red-Eye Reducing Night Scene: This mode reduces the red-eye effect in pictures taken in the Night Scene mode. (Except for the addition of a series of pre-flashes, it is identical to the Night Scene mode.)

High-magnification real-image viewfinder
With a high magnification of 0.45x, the real-image viewfinder makes composition easier and more comfortable.

All-weather, no-worry casing
The all-weather casing protects against sand and dust as well as a sudden shower or splashing. Meeting IEC grade 4 standards for "splash-proof," the design offers extra reassurance on a rainy day, at the beach or on a ski slope.

Other features
- Auto Macro: With this function, Macro shots can be taken from as close as 35cm to create pictures up to A4-size.
- Optional Remote control: The remote control makes it easy to trigger the shutter from as far as 5m.
- Spot Mode AE: This mode ensures accurate focusing and exposure for the main subject, regardless of the surrounding lighting conditions.

Innovations in Miniaturization

One of the keys to the Olympus µ[mju:]-II's compactness is a layout that incorporates both the motor and new shaft drive mechanism in the lower part of the camera body. By giving the designers greater flexibility, this innovative approach also opened the way to the wedge shape and stable balance.

All basic functions-including film advance/rewind, focusing lens barrel extension/retraction and shutter opening/closing-are handled by a single motor and plunger. Developed specially for the Olympus µ [mju:]-II, the compact new motor is situated lengthwise under the lens barrier in the space made available by the use of a shaft drive mechanism instead of the usual gears and belt drive. While this innovation contributes to the body's smaller dimensions, it also requires processing to exceptionally fine tolerances.
