Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects announces Forest, a first solo exhibition with William Pope.L opening on October 23, 2015. This exhibition will feature paintings and sculptures in an architectural installation surveying the artists object-based practice from the mid-1990s through the present. A simultaneous solo exhibition, Desert, at Steve Turner Contemporary will present a new film, Obi Sunt, about the ghost of Joe Gans, the first African American World Boxing Champion, and the mythology that surrounds the resurrection of a past through biography. The exhibitions will be accompanied by a GPS tour of the space in between the forest and the desert, Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects and Steve Turner Gallery. An artist-led walking tour exploring these themes will leave from each gallery on November 7, 2015. 

WILLIAM POPE.L is a visual and performance-theater artist and educator who makes culture out of contraries. He has been making multidisciplinary works since the 1970s, and has exhibited internationally including New York, London, Los Angeles, Vienna, Montreal, Berlin, Zurich, and Tokyo. He is a featured artist in the book Intersections edited by Marci Nelligan and Nicole Mauro, and Darby Englishs How to See a Work of Art in Total Darkness. He participated in the New Museums 2010 2011 exhibition The Last Newspaper with a reenactment of his infamous Eating the Wall Street Journal performance. In 2011, the Museum of Modern Art in New York invited Pope.L to participate in their FluxKit project. He is the recipient of the 2012 Joyce Foundation Award to create Pull! a large-scale public project presented through Spaces Gallery, Cleveland, OH. In 2013 he created the performance / film project A Long White Cloud at Te Tuhi, Auckland, New Zealand, and presented the solo exhibitions Colored Waiting Room at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, NYC; and Forlesen at The Renaissance Society, Chicago, IL, which also published the accompanying 2014 monograph Pope.L: Showing Up to Withhold. His work was presented as part of the 2014 exhibitions Ruffneck Constructivists at the University of Pennsylvanias Institute of Contemporary Art and Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art at Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; and in the solo exhibitions Claim at Littman Gallery, Portland, OR, and Gold People Shit in their Valet, at Galerie Catherine Bastide, Brussels, Belgium. The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Los Angeles, CA, presented his 2015 solo exhibition William Pope.L: Trinket.

Mark Moore Gallery presents “Cyclical Nature," the gallery’s second major solo show from artist Andrew Schoultz. Inspired by the recurrent nature of war and histories bound to repeat themselves, Schoultz’s latest exhibition toggles between his signature frenetic imagery and a new stark minimalism reminiscent of various art historical conventions – though both illustrate a topical, dystopian vision.

In this new body of work, notions of war, spirituality, and sociopolitical imperialism are prominent motifs, which parallel an equally repetitive contemporary pursuit of accumulation and power. “Cyclical Nature” examines not only the repetition of the same wars, but also the way in which they are recorded and memorialized, as well as how the past is recorded (and often glorified).

“Many of the wars being fought are the same wars that have been fought for hundreds and hundreds of years. For me, it makes sense to reference some historical art that was perhaps talking about, or recording the history, and put it in a contemporary context … after all, it is the same story, just a different time period. “ –Andrew Schoultz

Referencing iconic imagery such as suits of armor, battle horses, war ships, and all-seeing eyes, Schoultz makes connections between emblems of power and violence across cultures and epochs. All too reminiscent of the modern world, Schoultz shows us a beautiful yet brutal world of power structures, and urges us to resist.

ANDREW SCHOULTZ (b. 1975, WI) received his BFA from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco (CA). He has had solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Copenhagen, Philadelphia, Rotterdam, Boston, London, Portland, Detroit and Milan. He has been included in group exhibitions at the Andy Warhol Museum (PA), Torrance Art Museum (CA), Havana Biennial (Cuba), Hyde Park Arts Center (IL), Laguna Art Museum (CA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), among others. His work can be seen in the public collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), Frederick R. Weisman Foundation (CA) and the Progressive Art Collection (OH), in addition to his publicly funded murals in Portland (ME), Jogjakarta (Indonesia) and San Francisco (CA). Schoultz lives and works in San Francisco (CA).

Mark Moore Gallery presents “Prescott Pictures,” an inaugural solo exhibition by interdisciplinary artist and winner of the 5790projects grant and exhibition prize, LENAE DAY. Bringing together creative writing, costume design, photography, performance, and museum studies, Day relates the intricate hagiography of the titular fictitious film studio and its founding family.

Through the development of comprehensive visual, written, and performative personae and story lines, Lenae Day archives and inhabits the professional and personal sagas of the Prescotts. This faux archive - which takes form in Day’s elaborate multiplayer performances and photographic staging - is reminiscent of the conceptual dramaturgy behind the work of Cindy Sherman and Eleanor Antin. The Prescott history is presented through the familiar, albeit peculiar, subjectivity of the film enthusiast. In the well-researched and reverent mode of the movie lover, Day crafts the “Prescott Pictures” annals to culminate in an immersive Hollywood Museum experience teeming with intricately crafted ephemera—such as headshots, magazine covers, advertisements, movie posters, hand-sewn costumes, and props. Spanning the rise and fall of Classical Hollywood, Day’s “Prescott Pictures” both reflects and intervenes in the manifold histories and myths related to studio and celebrity constructs. In developing the relationships and tensions between her characters, Lenae Day projects exaggerated caricatures of the figures we most revere, admonish, and disregard as we shape our collective pop-cultural narrative.

LENAE DAY (b. 1986 in Berlin, Germany) received her BFA in Art from Western Washington University. She has had a solo exhibition in Seattle, in addition to group shows at the Museum of Radio and Electricity (WA), Whatcom Museum (WA), and Rock Paper Scissors Gallery (CA). This is the artist's first solo show in Los Angeles, where she also lives and works.

Roberts & Tilton presents The Missing Link, an exhibition of new works by NOAH DAVIS. In this new body of work, Noah Davis broadens, and in some cases breaks open completely the narrative of black youth culture in the inner cities, creating what he terms an “alternative canon” of unfamiliar instances, broken moments, derelict conversations and strange urban stories that have at their core an essential human longing, a nearly verifiable pulse, a “beat” as it were of a broader cosmopolitan cool.

Noah Davis’ paintings brim over with musical nuances and references, while others explore more concisely the complicated relationships between figures attempting to speak or share information. The colors become their own identifiable narrative trope, suggesting a civic bureaucracy, a mold that the figures attempt to break free from at every turn.

NOAH DAVIS is a participating artist in Fore, currently on view at the Studio Museum in Harlem through March 10, 2013. His work has previously been seen in 30 Americans at the Rubell Family Collection, Miami, FL, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA. Additional exhibitions include BAILA con Duende at the Watts Towers Arts Center, Los Angeles, CA and To Live and Paint in LA at the Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, CA. Noah Davis lives and works in Los Angeles.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS at Mark Moore Gallery in Culver City (the MM Gallery was previously located in Santa Monica), California, is a two-person exhibition featuring new works by DAVID HILLIARD and DAVID RATHMAN. This exhibition explores concepts of modern masculinity through two divergent mediums: photography and watercolor.

David Hilliard's distinctive command of a cinematic narrative is at once romantic and disconsolate, oftentimes crafting bittersweet vignettes that grapple with notions of sexuality, faith, mortality and nostalgia. His subtle manipulation of perspective and depth alludes to a similar distortion in our recollected memories, wistful snapshots drawn upon to form a chronicled identity unique to the artist yet relevant to all. Similarly, David Rathman's mottled watercolors illustrate iconic emblems of strength and struggle, luminary and the underdog. Loosely rendered scenes beckon to their pop cultural origins – films, album covers and advertisements alike – while also acting as collated excerpts from a lost Americana memoir. Mirage-like figures seem pulled from the hazy recesses of a sentimental male mind, or from the filmic cutting room floor as Rathman delineates composites of the modern idol. Together, Hilliard and Rathman produce a sagacious survey of the tradition of hero-worship, and foster insightful tension between conventional and unorthodox imagery of virility. With a tempered use of cliché and common expectation, Hilliard and Rathman's work yield frank complexities often overshadowed by mythic constructs of machismo.

DAVID HILLIARD (b. 1964) first showed with Mark Moore Gallery in 2000. Since then, he has had solo exhibitions in Boston, Seattle, New York, Frankfurt, Atlanta, Portland and New Orleans – and has been included in exhibitions at DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park (MA), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MA), Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts (OR) and Miami Art Museum (FL), among others. His work is also featured in over twenty collections of note, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (CA), Philadelphia Museum of Art (PA), the Community of Madrid (Spain) and the Art Institute of Chicago (IL). He is also represented by Carroll and Sons (Boston), Yancey Richardson Gallery (New York) and Jackson Fine Art (Atlanta). Hilliard received his MFA from Yale University, and lives and works in Boston (MA). 

DAVID RATHMAN (b.1958) was first included in Ultrasonic V: It's Only Natural at Mark Moore Gallery in 2010, and is newly represented by the gallery. He has had solo exhibitions New York, Chicago, Minneapolis and Los Angeles, and has been included in exhibitions at the Walker Art Center (MN), Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center (NY) and Arts Center of St. Petersburg (FL). His work has been acquired by more than a dozen collections, including the Walker Art Center (MN), The New Museum of Contemporary Art (NY), The Art Institute of Chicago (IL), the J. Paul Getty Museum (CA) and Boston Public Library (MA). He is also represented by Larissa Goldston Gallery (NY). Rathman received his BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MN), and lives and works in Minneapolis.

Roberts & Tilton presents an exhibition of paintings by Los Angeles based artist NOAH DAVIS. Sourcing imagery from found photographs, art history and imagination, Noah Davis both references and constructs his own personal history through psychologically driven paintings.

Noah Davis creates contemporary, pertinent imagery that combines the invented and the factual. This simultaneous tension exists throughout Noah Davis’ work: nostalgic and saccharine, unsettling and grotesque. Noah Davis’ painted subjects are deeply psychologically focused, but they also act as a discreet punch line. The paintings stand in as narrator for forgotten or suppressed moments in American history as told through a modern lens. They quietly remark on the banality and sadness of daily life; they point to tired stereotypes and strained classifications. All at once, Noah Davis is a historian, a surrealist, a storyteller, a comic and a sentimentalist.

NOAH DAVIS attended The Cooper Union School of Art in New York and in 2008 participated in the “30 Americans” show at the Rubell Family Collection (which travels to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC in the fall of 2010.) Noah Davis’ work is included in the permanent collections at The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York and at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, North Carolina.

For his first solo exhibition, Nobody, NOAH DAVIS has created a series of highly political abstract paintings. Noah Davis selects purple as the sole color on each of the three large-scale canvases. While the current socio-political atmosphere is prevalent in this Election year, the works remain fundamentally formal in appearance. Davis remarks on basic principles of composition and color theory, bringing to mind the early abstractions of Arthur Dove, the Minimalist drawings of Richard Serra and Paul Rand in his approach to Corporate graphic design. Titled, 2004, the series of new work is intended as fashionable paintings for 2008. These paintings are intended as historical documentation; each painting's seemingly compositionally arbitrary form is in fact the shape of a United States "swing state" in the 2004 presidential election. These paintings are as much about painting as they are about the politics of painting; Noah Davis presents documentation paintings that exhibit a misunderstanding of politics, and the politics of art.
