George Segal: Women – Maxwell Davidson Gallery – Exhibition and Catalog
George Segal: Women
Maxwell Davidson Gallery, New York
Through December 23, 2010
GEORGE SEGAL:WOMEN is George Segal’s first exhibition at Maxwell Davidson Gallery. The gallery is working directly with Carroll Janis and the George and Helen Segal Foundation to present and curate this show. This also represents the first time an exhibition has been devoted solely to Segal’s depictions of the female form – both sculptures and pastel drawings.
Segal emerged as one of the preeminent artists of the Pop era. Along with his contemporaries, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Tom Wesselmann, Segal combined his considerable artistic abilities with an in-depth understanding of art history to create a vision that was classical in approach, emotional in content, and at the same uniquely his own.
This exhibition is predominantly composed of the plaster cast sculptures for which he is renowned but also includes a series of pastels – all of which depict women. As John Wilmerding writes:
“...Of all Segal’s subjects, perhaps the most moving and haunting were his renderings of women, and the selection here covers the gamut of his inventiveness and range of expression.”
The fully cast forms and fragments in the show make use of various found objects and set pieces, and range in subject matter from erotic to athletic, and mundane to mesmerizing. The pastels are mainly line drawings, but the elegance of their simplicity and the vibrancy of their colors feature Segal’s ability as a draughtsman.

Rita Bernstein and Martine Fougeron at Gallery 339, Philadelphia
Martine Fougeron: After Prom - from the Tête-à-Tête Project
Rita Bernstein: Ghost of Summer
Gallery 339, Fine Art Photography, Philadelphia
Through January 29, 2011
Gallery 339 in Philadelphia presents two solo exhibitions through January 29, 2011.
After Prom, the latest chapter in MARTINE FOUGERON’s Tête-à- Tête Project. In 2005, Fougeron began photographing her sons, presenting the subtle, beautiful details of daily life through informal portraits of these young teenagers. As the project broadened to consider the relationships between the sons and among their circle of friends, Fougeron observed that most photography about teenage boys has portrayed dysfunction rather than the routine angst, exuberance, and rebelliousness that characterize adolescence. Continuing to focus on day-to-day moments and seeming non-events, Fougeron chose to present what she saw as a more representative portrait of teenage life—filled not with despair, but with the rich and complex drama of growing up. With After Prom, Martine Fougeron closes the adolescent phase of Tête- à-Tête, examining a key rite of passage—the post-prom party. Fougeron captures the abandon and the ambivalence of this moment when the comfort of what is familiar begins to slip away.
Ghost of Summer is an exhibition of recent images by photographer RITA BERNSTEIN. The scale and intimacy of these remarkable photographs belie the complexity and daring of Bernstein’s work. Her images walk a delicate tightrope; they evoke a sense of memory and of keenly felt private thoughts, yet their poignancy is controlled and perfectly modulated by their austerity and ambiguity. They are tender and mysterious, yet never stray into the sentimental. Bernstein further explores this dichotomy of heart versus mind through her print-making process, which demands a high level of skill yet remains uncertain and serendipitous. The process involves liquid silver emulsion applied to delicate Japanese Gampi paper. With the fragility of the paper, it is impossible to produce a flawless print or make a print that is identical to an earlier one. Rita Bernstein accepts and even embraces this inability to wholly control the process. It imparts individuality and subtle imperfections that are in accord with the vulnerability and humanity of her images.

Charles Biederman - Works: 1934-1994 – Exhibition at Meridith Ward Fine Art in NYC
Charles Biederman - Works: 1934-1994
Meridith Ward Fine Art, NYC
Through January 8, 2011
CHARLES BIEDERMAN – WORKS: 1934-1994 is on view at Meredith Ward Fine Art and feature twelve works, including constructions, paintings, sculpture, and works on paper from 1934 to 1994. The exhibition celebrates the publication of a new biography on the artist by Susan C. Larsen and Neil Juhl Larsen.
The show includes examples of Biederman’s structurist reliefs from all periods, including New York #8, a rare painted wood and glass construction from 1939; #2 Red Wing, a monumental wood, aluminum, and Plexiglas work from 1949; and #34 Aix, an aluminum construction from 1972. Also included will be a selection of paintings and works on paper from the few years in the mid-1930s when Biederman was focusing on two-dimensional media.
In September 1934, Charles Biederman moved to New York to be near the hub of developments in modern art. There, he observed firsthand the latest works of the European avant-garde, and made acquaintances with influential artists, dealers, and curators. By 1936, Biederman was working in an increasingly abstract mode, and was given his first solo exhibition at the Pierre Matisse Gallery.
Credited with inventing the medium of three-dimensional structurist reliefs, Charles Biederman was a pioneer in the development of abstraction in America. With their vibrant colors and unusual choice of materials, these constructions broke new ground in the development of an abstract vocabulary in the United States. Biederman considered the reliefs so successful, that by 1937, he put painting aside and worked exclusively in three dimensions from that point on.
Born in Cleveland, Charles Biederman began his career working in a commercial art studio, followed by formal instruction at the Art Institute of Chicago. His exposure to the work of modernist masters in the Art Institute’s collection stimulated his interest in cubism, and convinced him to take a progressive path in his work. As the young artist experimented in a range of styles, his works became increasingly ordered and geometric.

MOAK 2010 4-State regional exhibit - Springfield Art Museum
MOAK 2010 4-State Regional Exhibition
Springfield Art Museum, Missouri
November 20, 2010 - January 2, 2011
The exhibition intends to recognize and encourage artists 18 years of age and older working in all media who reside in the four-state region of Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kansas.
MOAK was inaugurated in 1990 as MOAK Crafts. In 1992, the show was broadened to include all media and was renamed MOAK 4-State Regional Exhibition. In 1996, the Friends of the Springfield Art Museum became the exhibit organizer and sponsor. From 2002 onward, the Museum has been both organizer and sponsor of the exhibition. The exhibit is held biennially, alternating with Prints U.S.A. Judges for the exhibition are selected on a rotating basis from one of the four states. A number of cash and Museum purchase awards are available for each exhibition.
Juror for MOAK 2010 was Julia Kirt, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Kirt holds an MA in Art History from the University of Oklahoma. She received the “Emerging Leadership Award” from the Americans for the Arts in 2008. Also an active curator, Kirt has taught art business courses at the University of Oklahoma and served as the 2008 Leader in Residence for the Art Department at the University of Central Oklahoma.
Kirt noted that “Amidst the variety of artwork, artists shared an appreciation for form, color and technique. Artists included a multiplicity of content from biting political commentary to the representation of simple enjoyment of nature.”
MOAK 2010 4-State Regional Exhibition contains work in a variety of media including painting, prints, photography, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry. 176 artists entered 337 works for the competition. 98 works were selected by 70 artists for inclusion in the exhibition.
Top awards went to Springfield artist HUGH C. YORTY for Still Life (12 Rue de Bac), 2009, an oil on canvas.
Works by 50 Missouri artists, 10 Oklahoma artists, 5 Arkansas artists and 5 Kansas artists are included in the exhibition. Eighteen artists from Springfield had works selected for the exhibition.
