Specially highlighted within SCOPE Art Show, ART ASIA concluded its first edition in Basel with strong sales and VIP attendance. Its new location at Sportplatz Landhof, just 100 metres from Art 40 Basel, attracted over 14,000 visitors during its 7 day run. "Many galleries reported sales to top and mid range collectors with impressive overall sales".
New participants such as C-Space (Beijing), Canvas International Art (Amstelveen), Paris Beijing Photo Gallery (Beijing), LiKailin (Cheshire), Connoisseur Contemporary (Hong Kong) and Da Xiang Art Space (Taichung City) all showcased remarkable, significant Chinese contemporary artists such as Yue Minjun, Liu Xiaodong, Wang Guangyi, Li Wei, Gao Brothers, Fan Xiaoyan, and Zhang Yu etc.
Melle Hendrikse of C-Space (Beijing), who shared a booth with Canvas International Art (Amstelveen), exclaimed: “We are glad we came and will come again next year. We’ve sold photographs and some of our more expensive paintings, which is good.”
Returning exhibitors such as Henry Au-Yeung of Grotto Fine Art from Hong Kong said: “For us, representing Hong Kong artists, this fair proved that the interests of European collectors are more in tune with what we had to offer and that the current economic situation did not affect genuine knowledge-based buying.” Au-Yeung also added, “Quality works always have a market.”
ART ASIA will return to its flagship fair in Miami for its second edition with plans to expand by 20% from its previous year due to the overwhelming success and high volume attendance. The fair will be held from December 2-6, 2009, coinciding with Art Basel Miami dates, in the Wynwood Art District, Miami.
As "the most important art fair dedicated to showcasing the best of Asian contemporary art in North America", ART ASIA expect to be a "dominating force within the Asian art world as well as a major contributor to the global art market". ART ASIA will continue to invite leading international Asian contemporary galleries to participate, however it will also give younger galleries the opportunity to debut on international platforms.
