HP PhotoSmart C20 digital camera

HP PhotoSmart C20 digital camera

Hewlett-Packard introduced the HP PhotoSmart C20 digital camera, a full-featured, high-resolution (one megapixel) digital camera that allows users to capture and view special moments quickly and easily. This is the second HP digital camera after the HP PhotoSmart.

The PhotoSmart C20 digital camera provides home consumers with everything they need to take real photographs. Snapshots taken with the camera and printed on the HP PhotoSmart printer produce 3.5-inch by 5-inch photographs with the look and feel of conventional photos.

HP PhotoSmart C20 Digital Camera Features

The PhotoSmart C20 digital camera, which ships with an AC adapter, batteries and everything users need to begin taking real photographs immediately, was designed to include the features digital-camera users value most.

A color display on the rear panel of the new digital camera enables users to preview photos they want to take. They also can review and select the photographs they want to upload to their PCs and edit out shots they don't want. A new integrated TV connection with an extra-long cable (16.4 feet) allows users to display photographs on their TVs in the comfort of their living rooms -- or in their hotel rooms during vacations or business trips.

The camera comes with a high-capacity removable CompactFlash memory card, which acts like re-usable digital film, giving users unlimited photo-taking capabilities. A 4MB card ships with every camera. Up to 30MB flash memory cards also are available.

"The HP PhotoSmart C20 digital camera gives new meaning to 'instant gratification,'" said Irene Pecenco, general manager of HP's Home Imaging Division. "Users can view their photos immediately on their computers or TVs; they no longer have to wait for the photo-processing lab. Using their PCs and the PhotoSmart printer and photographic paper, they can produce snapshots, reprints and creative projects in the comfort of their own homes."

New HP Photo-finishing Software

The HP PhotoSmart C20 digital camera includes new PhotoSmart photo-finishing software, which automatically downloads photos when the camera is connected to a PC. Users can then print an index print of all their photos for easy viewing and selection -- all within 45 minutes of opening the box. New exclusive page-layout features allow users to use paper efficiently by printing multiple photographs on the same sheet of paper.

The new HP PhotoSmart photo-finishing software also provides advanced image-management features that enable users to crop, lighten or darken, adjust color and add captions or text to their photos before printing.

U.S. Pricing and Availability: The HP PhotoSmart C20 digital camera is expected to sell for about $699. The new photo-finishing software is included in the box with every camera. The camera is expected to be available in North America in the spring.

Canon IXUS Z70 APS Compact Camera

Canon IXUS Z70 APS Camera

Canon has launched another Advanced Photo System camera to enhance its IXUS range, the Canon IXUS Z70. Based on the well know IXUS design, the stainless steel body and compact size of the IXUS Z70 are combined with a 3x zoom lens and light guide flash.

Measuring just 95 x 64.5 x 32mm, the Canon IXUS Z70 is marginally bigger than the IXUS so that it can incorporate the high quality 23-69mm f/4.5-9.9 with GMo aspherical lenses (equivalent to 29 to 87 on a 35mm camera).

Canon IXUS Z70 - Light Guide Flash
The new Light guide flash system introduced for the first time on the IXUS Z70 is more efficient than normal flash systems and, being smaller, is incorporated into the sleek design of the camera to slide out automatically when the camera is turned on.

Uniform illumination is provided by using a light tube, acrylic light guide and a small reflection umbrella at the back of the flash. As light is dispersed to match the photographic field, the ratio of lost light is improved by about 35%. As a result, a more consistently lit subject area is obtained.

Additionally, miniaturisation is possible because there is no need for a fresnel lens or large reflection umbrella. As the flash unit slides out from the main body of the camera, the distance between flash and lens is increased, further reducing red-eye effect.

Canon IXUS Z70 - Advanced Photo System (APS)
APS features on the IXUS Z70 include mid roll film change and print quantity setting. The print quantity setting enables users to select the number of prints of each shots (0 to 9) either before or after taking the picture. Using this feature, the number of extra prints of a picture can be recorded immediately so the photographer does not have to remember how many are required.

Other APS features include print format selection, date/title back printing, drop-in loading and IX data exchange which records eleven types of photographic data on each frame to ensure consistently high picture quality.

Canon IXUS Z70 - Three Point Auto Focus
The hybrid auto focus system combines the advantages of infra-red auto focus, which works well at close range and in low light, with passive autofocus which can operate through glass and is highly accurate at longer distances.

The system also incorporates a three point distance measuring system to give sharp images from wide angle through to telephoto. Five infra-red beams change the illumination angle according to zoom position of the lens so that correct focus is almost guaranteed.

Other features incorporated are five flash modes - including red-eye reduction and auto back-lit -, +1.5 automatic exposure compensation and a minimum focusing distance of just 60cm.

The Canon IXUS Z70 is available from April at a price of £260 in UK.

AIPAD Photography Show 1998

The Photography Show 98, sponsored by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD), will return to New York City February 13th to 15th, 1998. The Photography Show 98, the world's largest art fair devoted to fine art photography, will be held in the Exhibit Halls at the New York Hilton, 53rd Street and Avenue of the Americas.

Eighty AIPAD dealers from the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan will participate in the 1998 exposition. An extensive range of fine art photography, from rare vintage works to cutting edge contemporary, will be on view and available for purchase. The Photography Show, now in its eighteenth year, is internationally recognized for unparalleled connoisseurship and has become an invaluable event for leading museum curators, established as well as beginning collectors, and interior designers.

To showcase contemporary photography, a special section at The Photography Show 98 will be devoted to cutting edge photography. Photographs on display in this special exhibit area will be large scale images produced after 1990.

For The Photography Show 98, AIPAD will host a symposium, Creating & Collecting: It Takes Two, on February 14th from 9:30 to 11:30. The panel discussion, organised by Stephen Perloff, Editor of The Photograph Collector and The Photo Review, will feature couples who collaborate on photographic projects. The symposium is open to the public at no charge.

The 1998 event will be The Photography's sixth year at the exhibit hall of the New York Hilton Hotel. The popularity has grown steadily since AIPAD's return to NYC in 1993. Week end attendance for the last show in March 1997 was over 7000 visitors.

The Photography Show 98 will be open to the public on three consecutive days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday: February 13th, 14th and 15th. Admission price is $15 daily; $30 for a three-day pass. The admission price includes AIPAD's annual Illustrated Catalogue and Membership Directory, 288 pages, over 200 illustrations. After February 15th, the catalogue can be purchased by mail from the AIPAD office: $25 postpaid; $35 outside the U.S. postpaid.
