Power meets pocket

Olympus’ PEN design team has won praise from industry experts and consumers alike for creating a series of contemporary cameras with a retro twist. But to mark the 50th anniversary of the famous PEN F, they wanted a more distinctively retro concept. The answer came in the shape of the PEN F itself, which started a revolution at its launch. Instead of spending a year’s wages on a clunky camera, 1960s consumers could get a portable PEN F with interchangeable lenses for no more than they earned in a month. 50 years on, the E-P5 looks to honour the PEN F tradition with the same sloping lines, elegant Olympus lettering and ‘step-down’ front profile. The excellent build is another reminder of the original cult classic. With the screws visible only on the base of the camera, the quality of the craftsmanship is apparent from both ends of the lens. To round off the individual look, an optional, real-wood ergonomic grip can be fitted in one of three styles.

Style meets substance

For demanding photographers, no collector’s item is worth collecting unless the quality of the technology lives up to the looks. Which is why Olympus has given the E-P5 the same 16-Megapixel TruePic VI Live MOS sensor found in its OM-D camera. In tests, this sensor has outperformed the APS-C variety found in some DSLR cameras and Olympus cherry-picked some of their very best optical technology to take maximum advantage. The E-P5 is the first compact system camera with a mechanical shutter capable of operating at 1/8000th of a second. This gets the very best out of super-bright, high-speed system lenses. You can freeze fast-moving objects such as insects in flight or – with an 1:1.8 aperture – create pictures with dramatic background blur, even in bright conditions.

Another speed-based Olympus trademark is FAST AF, which on the E-P5 offers macro fans the option of using a very small AF point to pick out part of a subject they have already framed, for example a single pollen in the centre of a flower. Thanks to minimal shutter lag, the E-P5 increases the chances of capturing the shot just as they want it.

Smart camera meets smartphone

If you tell a friend your new E-P5 has built-in WiFi, they’ll likely assume that makes it easier to upload pictures to the Web via your smartphone. But on the E-P5, WiFi means more than that. You can use your Apple or Android smartphone to operate the camera remotely, including the autofocus and shutter release. You can synchronise the smartphone and camera screens so that you effectively see the camera’s LCD on your phone – and control the PEN by touching the smartphone display as if it were your camera. This is extremely useful for picking your spot with FAST AF, for self-portraits and for remotely shooting subjects like wildlife that are easily startled if you get too close. You can countdown to shutter release on the phone itself, grant friends’ devices access to selected images and – with new Olympus Image Share 2.0 software – use your smartphone to embed GPS information in your shots.

Comfort meets control

Fans of hands-on photography will appreciate one E-P5 innovation in particular: the 2x2 Dial Control system comprising two dials and a switch, mounted in easy reach on the back and top of the camera. When shooting manually, the switch on the back can quickly be moved to one of two positions. In the first position, moving the dial on the front of the camera adjusts aperture while the dial on the back affects exposure time. With the second setting, the dials change the ISO value and white balance respectively. Alternatively, you can use the switch on the back of the camera to assign other functions.

The new PEN boasts other top-notch features far too long to list here. Among the highlights are 5-axis IS, 9fps sequential shooting and a tiltable VF-4 electronic viewfinder. With its 2.360.000 dot display, the VF-4 makes framing easier and more accurate. It automatically switches mode when it detects your eye.

The E-P5 will be available from the end of June 2013. As a camera body only for €999 and in kit form with one of two lenses: the 17mm 1:1.8 for €1449 (including the VF-4) or the 14-42mm for €1099, which includes the option to fit a distinctive real-wood grip at the time of ordering. Of course, the E-P5 is compatible with the whole Micro Four Thirds range, which now extends to black versions of the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm 1:1.8, 45mm 1:1.8 and 75mm 1:1.8 lenses.

Samsung Releases the Inner Zoom Type Slim Digital i-5 Camera

Samsung Techwinhas announced that it is releasing a new-concept slim digital camera. The 5 mega-pixel, 3x optical zoom digital camera i-5 is the brainchild of the ¡®Slim, Stylish & Smart¡ concept.

With the ambition of capturing the slim-type digital camera market, Samsung Techwin spent about 5 million dollars over a period of 8 months on research and development for the i-5, which is the first Samsung product to incorporate inner zoom technology, which give the camera its slim (17.3mm) design.

Unlike the competing products, the body is made of stainless steel, which has exceptional durability against scratches and shocks.

The product is available in fashionable silver, red, black and gray colors.

The SF (safety flash) function, Samsung Techwin¡'s unique technology, has also been upgraded substantially to minimize camera shake and obtain much more natural colors when taking indoor pictures without using flash. This technology is expected to attract attention from younger consumers, since turning the flash off can protect young people¡'s eyesight, and also produces more natural pictures in places like the inside of cafes.

Responding to consumer need for larger and clearer displays, the i-5 incorporates a 230,000-pixel, large 2.5-inch TFT LCD, which provides viewing of much larger and clearer images as well as achieving higher contrast and more vividness of color.

The video (MPEG-4, VGA, 30fps) function, the inherent strength of Samsung Digimax products, is now available with 3x optical zoom during shooting. This product is a good alternative to conventional camcorders as it can shoot videos of up to 2 hours and 10 minutes with only 256MB of memory.

Technological know-how accumulated over a long period has made it possible to improve resolution, exposure and AWB (auto white balance) accuracy, and increase the initial start-up and shot-to-shot speeds. Also, the product can be charged using a 24-pin mobile phone charger approved by the Korean TTA (Telecommunications Technology Association), providing the convenience and portability suitable for a slim camera.

A Samsung Techwin spokesperson told the press that the product includes a number of advanced multimedia functions, unlike other slim-type products that only put emphasis on portability and design. The Nikon Coolpix S4 features a 10x Zoom-Nikkor lens to give an outstanding 38-380mm performance (35mm equivalent). Sony's new Cyber-shot® DSC-P150 is the world's first compact point-and-shoot digital camera in the marketplace loaded with 7.2 megapixels, putting breathtaking, near-professional-quality photos in your shirt pocket or handbag. It will be available in September 2004 for less than $500.

The P150 camera yields an image size of 3072 x 2304 - making it the first pocketable camera capable of capturing enough pixels to make 300-dpi 8" x 10" enlargements.

Canon has launched another Advanced Photo System camera to enhance its IXUS range, the Canon IXUS Z70. Based on the well know IXUS design, the stainless steel body and compact size of the IXUS Z70 are combined with a 3x zoom lens and light guide flash.

Measuring just 95 x 64.5 x 32mm, the Canon IXUS Z70 is marginally bigger than the IXUS so that it can incorporate the high quality 23-69mm f/4.5-9.9 with GMo aspherical lenses (equivalent to 29 to 87 on a 35mm camera).

Canon IXUS Z70 - Light Guide Flash

The new Light guide flash system introduced for the first time on the IXUS Z70 is more efficient than normal flash systems and, being smaller, is incorporated into the sleek design of the camera to slide out automatically when the camera is turned on.

Uniform illumination is provided by using a light tube, acrylic light guide and a small reflection umbrella at the back of the flash. As light is dispersed to match the photographic field, the ratio of lost light is improved by about 35%. As a result, a more consistently lit subject area is obtained.

Additionally, miniaturisation is possible because there is no need for a fresnel lens or large reflection umbrella. As the flash unit slides out from the main body of the camera, the distance between flash and lens is increased, further reducing red-eye effect.

Canon IXUS Z70 - Advanced Photo System (APS)

APS features on the IXUS Z70 include mid roll film change and print quantity setting. The print quantity setting enables users to select the number of prints of each shots (0 to 9) either before or after taking the picture. Using this feature, the number of extra prints of a picture can be recorded immediately so the photographer does not have to remember how many are required.

Other APS features include print format selection, date/title back printing, drop-in loading and IX data exchange which records eleven types of photographic data on each frame to ensure consistently high picture quality.

Canon IXUS Z70 - Three Point Auto Focus

The hybrid auto focus system combines the advantages of infra-red auto focus, which works well at close range and in low light, with passive autofocus which can operate through glass and is highly accurate at longer distances.

The system also incorporates a three point distance measuring system to give sharp images from wide angle through to telephoto. Five infra-red beams change the illumination angle according to zoom position of the lens so that correct focus is almost guaranteed.

Other features incorporated are five flash modes - including red-eye reduction and auto back-lit -, +1.5 automatic exposure compensation and a minimum focusing distance of just 60cm.

The Canon IXUS Z70 is available from April at a price of £260 in UK.

Advanced design 

Even though the Olympus µ [mju:]-II is small enough to fit comfortably into one hand, its miniaturization has not impaired performance, reliability, easy operation, handling or stable balance in any way or form. 

Equally important, its extra-bright F2.8 lens opens up shooting possibilities that were beyond the capabilities of previous compact cameras. In dim light, photographers can capture the nuances of ambient conditions indoors or at dusk. They can also count on the aspherical lens for visibly different image quality.

Several sensors are used to detect lighting information and relay it to the new Intelligent Variable Power Flash system. Ensuring an ideal color balance and lifelike results, the Auto Color-Balancing Flash system is the world's first system of its kind. The flash fires automatically when a sensor detects the wavelength of fluorescent or other artificial lighting that may result in an unnatural cast. The intelligent system's soft flash capability also prevents over-exposure, while the improved Auto mode triggers the flash automatically in dim light or backlit situations (for example,when sunlight is filtered through trees). 

AF module with special prism 

With the special shape of the exclusive prism that receives light, the AF module has been positioned to contribute to the overall miniaturization of the body. Employing a three-point focusing system with 414 steps, the AF unit delivers outstanding performance, especially from a camera with a large-aperture lens. 

Versatile flash modes 

The new Intelligent Variable-Power Flash's six modes deliver high-quality flash pictures. 

- Auto: In low light and backlit situations, the flash fires automatically to ensure that the illumination is appropriate. When fluorescent or other artificial light is detected, the new Auto Color-Balancing Flash takes over to create lifelike colors.

- Red-Eye Reducing Auto: The red-eye -a common problem with flash portraits-is reduced by a series of pre-flashes emitted before the main flash fires. (Same as Auto otherwise)

- Fill-in: Ideal for high-contrast situations, the flash always fires in this mode, eliminating the shadows caused by strong sunlight.

- Flash Off: This mode is the answer when flash photography is prohibited. It is also ideal for capturing a natural ambience.

- Night Scene: The intensity of the flash is determined by the foreground, while the length of the exposure is set according to the backdrop. Slowing the shutter speed to as long as 4 sec., this mode captures both the subject in the foreground and the night-time scenery.

- Red-Eye Reducing Night Scene: This mode reduces the red-eye effect in pictures taken in the Night Scene mode. (Except for the addition of a series of pre-flashes, it is identical to the Night Scene mode.)

High-magnification real-image viewfinder 

With a high magnification of 0.45x, the real-image viewfinder makes composition easier and more comfortable. 

All-weather, no-worry casing 

The all-weather casing protects against sand and dust as well as a sudden shower or splashing. Meeting IEC grade 4 standards for "splash-proof," the design offers extra reassurance on a rainy day, at the beach or on a ski slope. 

Other features

- Auto Macro: With this function, Macro shots can be taken from as close as 35cm to create pictures up to A4-size.

- Optional Remote control: The remote control makes it easy to trigger the shutter from as far as 5m.

Innovations in Miniaturization 

One of the keys to the Olympus µ[mju:]-II's compactness is a layout that incorporates both the motor and new shaft drive mechanism in the lower part of the camera body. By giving the designers greater flexibility, this innovative approach also opened the way to the wedge shape and stable balance. 

All basic functions-including film advance/rewind, focusing lens barrel extension/retraction and shutter opening/closing-are handled by a single motor and plunger. Developed specially for the Olympus µ [mju:]-II, the compact new motor is situated lengthwise under the lens barrier in the space made available by the use of a shaft drive mechanism instead of the usual gears and belt drive. While this innovation contributes to the body's smaller dimensions, it also requires processing to exceptionally fine tolerances.

Yashica enters the APS (Advanced Photo System) market in early 1996, with the introduction of its new Yashica Acclaim 100 and Yashica Acclaim Zoom 200 cameras at the 1996 Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Exposition, February 22-25 at Las Vegas Convention Center. 

Both new APS Lens Shutter compact cameras are specifically designed for use with the new APS format, which provides photographers with a higher level of flexibility and convenience other types of film.

Focal length is the differentiating factor on the new cameras. The Yashica Acclaim 100 has a 25mm (three elements in three groups) super-sharp, coated, wide angle glass lens. The Acclaim Yashica Zoom 200 has a 30-60mm (five elements in five groups) power zoom lens that makes it easy to go from wide angle to telephoto at the touch of a button.

Both the Yashica Acclaim 100 and Yashica Acclaim Zoom 200 are equipped with a switch that takes advantage of the flexibility of APS technology, making it possible to mix three different sizes of prints on the same roll of film. The three print size options include C ("Classic" 4"x6" format), P (4" x 12") format and H (which conforms to the format of HDTV or wide-screen television 4"x7"). Both new cameras have a Real Image Viewfinder that changes according to which print size is selected.

Other features shared by the Yashica Acclaim 100 and Yashica Acclaim Zoom 200 include a built-in active infrared auto-focus system; a 10 second self-timer; an automatic exposure system; and a five-mode flash system with red eye reduction). The digital information center on both cameras displays the film counter, flash mode, self-timer, low battery waming and date and time.

In addition, the Yashica Acclaim Zoom 200 also offers an infinity lock mode to ensure perfectly focused pictures when shooting through glass. When infinity mode is selected, it is indicated in the viewfinder.

Both new Yashica/APS cameras utilize basic Print Quality Improvement (PQl) technology whereby the camera "communicates" with the film via a magnetic coating on the surface of the film. PQI records scene and status information on the magnetic strip. Information is then transferred from the film to the processor, resulting in improved picture quality.

Additionally, both cameras will make photographic record keeping more convenient than ever before. Date or time will be automatically printed on the back of the processed prints. With the prints, developed film will be returned, uncut in its original protective cassette with an index print that makes it very easy to order reprints or enlargements.

The Weathermatic Dual 35 is O-Ring sealed against moisture, sand and dust. This design makes the camera ideal for use on snowy hillsides, sandy beaches, in the rain, or even 16.5 feet underwater. Underwater Versatility

The Weathermatic Dual 35 is designed so that you can enjoy taking pictures anywhere you go, even underwater. The back cover and battery chamber are sealed to permit operation to depths of 16.5 feet. This makes the Weathermatic Dual 35 ideal for snorkeling, windsurfing and other water sports.

When used underwater, the Weathermatic Dual 35 automatically switches from autofocusing to Focus-Free (fixed-focus) operation. The glass plate in front of the lens forms a positive meniscus lens that sets the focus for sharp pictures of subjects from 3.96 to 11.5 feet (with the 35mm lens). The user can also select the 5Omm lens, and the viewfinder magnification will change accordingly.

By pressing the underwater close-up button, the user can set the focus for sharp pictures from 1.7 to 4.3 feet with the 35mm lens, and the flash will fire automatically for proper exposure. Now, beautiful pictures of fish, coral, and other marine life are possible without using special lenses or attachments.

Rugged All-Weather Styling

A comfortable, molded rubber handgrip and convenient controls permit camera operation even when wearing gloves. To seal out water, sand, and dust, the camera has a rubber gasket on the back cover and a rubber O-Ring on the battery chamber cover. Because the camera is completely sealed against water, it can be cleaned by rinsing it in fresh water.

Dual Lens Selection

The Weathermatic Dual 35 is the first waterproof camera that lets the user choose between 35mm standard and 50mm tele lens --even underwater. At the touch of a button, the camera instantly changes the lens from standard to tele, and the viewfinder magnification changes simultaneously to match the lens' angle of view.

Autofocus with Focus Hold

The Weathermatic Dual 35 active-infrared autofocus produces sharply focused pictures, even in the dark. By maintaining slight pressure on the shutter-release button, you can hold the focus setting an decompose the picture with the subject anywhere in the frame.

An auto close-up function enables users to get sharp picture of flowers and other small subjects. Whenever the subject is about 30 inches or closer, the flash fires automatically for proper exposure. With the 35mm lens, users can take pictures as close as 20.8 inches.

Fully Automatic Exposure

Fully automatic programmed exposure with subject-weighted metering assures accurate exposures even when the subject is backlit or spotlighted. No manual exposure settings are required at any time. You can just aim the camera and shoot.

Auto Switchover Flash

For proper exposures in low light, the camera automatically fires its built-in flash. The camera is always ready to take flash pictures because flash charging starts the moment the camera is switched on. A convenient "flash-wait" red LED glows if the flash is not charged. To prevent taking an underexposed picture, the shutter locks until the flash is ready to fire. Between exposures, flash charging is extremely fast, just 1.2 seconds when a Duracell-lithium battery pack is used.

Fully Automatic Film Transport

With the Weathermatic Dual 35, film handling is virtually mistake-proof. Film speeds for DX-coded ISO 100 and 400 films are automatically set by the camera. After loading the film and closing the back cover, the film is advanced automatically to the first frame. The film is advanced automatically after each exposure, and rewinding starts automatically at the end of the roll.

Dual Power Source

The Weathermatic Dual 35 is powered by either a 6-volt lithium battery pack or four AAA-size alkaline batteries. For longer life and shorter flash-recycle times, lithium batteries are recommended.

Accessories

A wide neck strap is supplied with the camera. The length of the strap can be adjusted to match the camera's minimum focus distance for close-up pictures.

Optional accessories include a carrying case for the camera, a Sportsfinder, and a Sportscase. The carrying case is designed to keep the Weathermatic Dual 35 handy for active travelers. The case is made of bright yellow material and has a wide belt loop for attachment to your belt. The Sportsfinder attaches quickly to the camera and permits fast, easier framing for moving subjects. The Sportsfinder is specially designed for underwater use and indicates the angle of both 35mm and 50mm lens.

The Sportscase is also made of bright yellow material that matches the camera body. The Sportscase holds the camera and Sportsfinder and has room for spare film and batteries.
