During the printing industry trade show in Düsseldorf, Heidelberg is presenting a portfolio want to span all key market developments in the sector today to enable customers to seize on the latest trends in the industry and build them into their operations. The trade show presentation will focus in particular on lean production, green printing, web-to-print, print-on-demand, differentiation through coatings and special effects, the future of packaging printing and gaining an edge through the latest know-how. To reflect the trade show banner "Discover HEI" and give visitors a clear point of reference, each of these seven market trends will be summed up with a "HEI" title.
Efficiency, cost optimization, and speed are expected throughout the advertising sector. When it comes to print production, return on investment is what matters to the customer who is looking for the best product at the best price. The only way that can be achieved is by streamlining the entire production workflow using process optimization and the fastest possible production processes. According to Heidelberg, this is made possible by HEI Productivity solutions.

Every type of surface finishing technique such as coating, embossing, and cold foil applications is used to make a printed product stand out and to enhance its impact or durability. When it comes to coatings and special effects, print shops need to adapt to meet the needs of customers and print buyers for a process-optimized production workflow that keeps costs down, doesn't waste time, generates added value, and ensures the final product stands out. Coatings, special effects and the skilled combination of various surface finishing options represent a core competency that delivers maximum benefits and ensures an eye-catching result. Heidelberg is presenting these opportunities under “HEI Emotions”.
Packaging is printed communication and often offers much more than just words and images. It doesn't serve simply to protect products and aid their transport and storage either. Packaging makes a direct statement about the product inside. It communicates, transfers knowledge, and is often the decisive factor in a customer's decision to purchase at the point of sale. In other words, it is largely packaging that encourages us to buy a product. Coatings and special effects are often used to make products stand out at the point of sale and Heidelberg is exhibiting all the company’s options under “HEI End”.
As customers become more sensitive to prices, run sizes decrease, and job variation increases, print shops in industrialized nations are going to have to reorganize their production systems so that they are even more flexible and efficient. Throughput times in print production are becoming ever tighter and, in response, Heidelberg is unveiling a Speedmaster XL 105 with a production speed of 18,000 sheets per hour in perfecting mode at drupa 2012.

Rollem PhotoSlit Photobook Finishing System
The lastest innovation from UK manufacturer Rollem is PhotoSlit, a photobook finishing system that want to combines high cut quality and productivity with minimum operator skills and maintenance along with the ability to change settings easily between jobs.
Initially, PhotoSlit is being aimed at fast turnaround printers, with digital web-to-print workflows for jobs up to SRA3. However, Rollem says it could manufacture PhotoSlit in other sizes if required, including up to B1.
Rollem's new PhotoSlit photobook system can handle 8,000 SRA3 sph with extremely high accuracy.
“Our comprehensive in-house design and engineering facilities allow us to create finishing equipment that meets a very specific need,” says managing director Stuart Murphy. “PhotoSlit is a good example of how we can respond quickly to create a bespoke finishing solution. Very often we design and build equipment in situations where other manufacturers will not even consider trying to find an answer. Such systems can give quite a competitive edge to a company in the marketplace and, unfortunately, this generally means we are not allowed to publicise the installation - a bit frustrating when you’ve just achieved a major breakthrough in post-press technology!”
The two-dimensional bleed cutting facility incorporated with PhotoSlit is said to provide the most accurate and narrow bleed cutting in the world. With a gutter size as small as 1.6 mm, PhotoSlit can significantly reduce waste and produce more pages per printed sheet than other photobook systems on the market. The long-life slitting blades should last between three and six months in a normal, busy production environment.

PhotoSlit can handle up to 8,000 SRA3 sheets an hour. The page size range is from A6 to A3 and Rollem says it could make a system capable of handling sheets down to 75 x 30 mm. Each printed sheet is carefully handled individually, with identical processing every time leading to extremely precise registration.
If there is a problem with print image shift within the job, Rollem’s AutoLay system enables the operator to compensate for this. Other features incorporated within the new Rollem equipment include batch counting and remote control. PhotoSlit is independently verified to comply with CE and the latest European machinery directives.
The shingling conveyor has the ability to create defined gaps, which allows easy batching of output
“The standard SRA3 PhotoSlit product costs £55,000 and this includes all that is needed for most photobook pages in an in-line environment,” says Stuart Murphy. “In addition to near-line and in-line PhotoSlit systems, we are able to produce off-line versions, which can be used with our deep pile feeder or shallow pile TurboFeeder, both reliable and robust systems. As with so much of what we create at our Sheffield factory, the end product is generally a solution to a customer’s particular post press need.”

:Anapurna XLS at Graph Expo 2008
The Agfa Graphics :Anapurna XLS is making its North America debut at Graph Expo 2008, which runs October 26th through October 29th at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. Agfa's :Anapurna XLS is a wide format, industrial inkjet printer for indoor and outdoor signs and displays, specially designed to handle heavy workloads. It uses UV inks that produce highly saturated colors that can withstand image longevity under severe outdoor conditions. It can print on a wide variety of roll or rigid media at a top speed of 473 square feet per hour. Capable of printing point-of-purchase displays, posters, banners, automobile fleet displays, exhibition panels, stage graphics and construction signs and panels, the :Anapurna XLS also has several features that many printers of indoor and outdoor signs and displays often require for effective advertising, promotion and efficient workflow, such as borderless printing, dual board printing, automatic maintenance and automatic ink refill. The XLS features a Walking Floor. Materials are mounted to the Walking Floor's vacuums and unique stamper-feet hold the materials in place while the print shuttle moves across the surface. The Walking Floor also allows for a lower waste factor making more of the substrate usable for printing. Agfa's stamper-feet design makes switching from roll-to-roll to rigid very easy and beneficial for increased productivity. The Media Scan function automatically recognizes media size, thickness and position on the printing table. All defined parameters are displayed in a graphical user interface and they can be overruled by the engine operator.
