Canon EOS 5D Mark II and 7D used for Marvel's The Avengers

Canon EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D SLR Digital cameras' 1920 x 1080 HD recording and 24p frame rate enable gripping point-of-view shots for theatrical filmmaking


Canon USA recently announced (May 9, 2012) that EOS 5D Mark II and 7D Digital SLR cameras have been used on the set of Marvel's latest movie, "Marvel's The Avengers," to capture thrilling point-of-view (POV) action shots that can be seamlessly intercut with footage from the film's principal 35mm and digital cinematography cameras to heighten the film's visual impact. "Marvel's The Avengers" shows an epic confrontation between nightmarish super villains attacking the Earth and the super-heroic team of Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, and Black Widow. Directed by Joss Whedon, the film is the latest and most extraordinary Marvel Studios Super Hero movie to date.

With intense action and visual effects captured by the Canon cameras, "Marvel's The Avengers" required close-quarter action work with unrepeatable stunts. "The 5D Mark II and the 7D digital SLR cameras produce excellent, cinema-worthy images. They are great for shooting additional angles that give film editors more options for creating powerfully immersive and kaleidoscopic views of action scenes," explained the film's cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey.

On the set of "Marvel's The Avengers," McGarvey and his crew used five Canon 5D Mark II cameras and two 7D models. Using multiple cameras limited the need to re-shoot complex action scenes, and the affordability and compact size of the cameras enabled the crew to obtain ample coverage by strategically angling them from various vantage points throughout the set. "The cameras' small size was a major advantage to us. We were able to place them in tight locations that were really close to the big stunts, which would be too risky to do with bigger cameras that would require an operator and two assistants," McGarvey said. He was able to slide one of the Canon cameras into a sewer grating, while placing another under a pile of debris for a key shot of a car hurtling toward the lens, flipping through the air on fire.

Compact, lightweight, and compatible with Canon's wide selection of EF Series lenses, the Canon 5D Mark II and EOS 7D digital SLR cameras are equipped with large Canon CMOS sensors and Canon DIGIC 4 image processors that enable them to record exceptional full 1920 x 1080 HD video at the user-selectable frame rate of 24p (23.976 fps), which is the standard for today's high-end filmmaking. Additionally, the cameras' low-light capabilities were of major importance on the set of "Marvel's the Avengers," as many of the film's scenes were shot at night.

Pentax K20D Digital SLR

Improving on the technology of the award winning K10D, the flagship Pentax K20D is the highest resolution camera in the advanced photo enthusiast category and allows more experienced photographers, who demand complete control, to fully customize the camera.
Newly Developed CMOS Image Sensor
The Pentax K20D features a newly developed CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) image sensor measuring 23.4 mm x 15.6 mm. In designing the K20D, Pentax made the significant transition to a higher resolution 14.6 megapixel sensor, rivaling the detail previously only found in images captured with 35mm film. This considerable gain offers 50 percent more resolution than 10 megapixel sensors, and 20 percent more resolution than 12 megapixel sensors. Pentax Imaging (a leading innovator in the imaging business) collaborated with Samsung Electronics (a market leader in developing and producing semiconductors) in the development of the 14.6 megapixel CMOS Sensor found in the Pentax K20D Digital SLR. The larger photo diode in the sensor gathers more light in a shorter time and therefore can respond more sensitively. As a result, the K20D is able to achieve higher sensitivity levels (up to 6400 in the expanded ISO mode). Also, there is a more direct light path to the pixels. Coupled with a high-performance imaging engine incorporating Pentax-original image-processing technologies programmed to yield natural, true-to-life images, the new model assures fine-detailed, rich-gradation images.
Pentax Original Shake Reduction Mechanism
The K20D is equipped with the Pentax-developed Shake Reduction mechanism, which reduces camera shake for sharp, blur-free images even under demanding shooting conditions, such as shooting with a telephoto lens, shooting in low light conditions or at night without supplementary flash illumination, or using extended exposures for sunset scenes. This innovative mechanism offers outstanding compensation equivalent to approximately 2.5 to 4 shutter-speed steps. In addition, the lighter image sensor unit and refined data-control algorithm offer improved image stabilization over previous models. Pentax Shake Reduction is compatible with existing Pentax interchangeable lenses. Lenses compatible with this mechanism are: Pentax K-, KA-, KAF- and KAF2-mount lenses, screw-mount lenses (with an adapter); and 645- and 67-system lenses (with an adapter). Some functions may not be applicable with certain lenses.
Large 2.7 Inch Wide-view LCD Monitor
The K20D features a large 2.7 inch color LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 dots resolution (One dot equals 3 pixels). The wide-view design allows the photographer to view the monitor image from approximately 160 degrees both vertically and horizontally. Since it assures effortless image viewing from a diagonal position, it facilitates low- and high-angle shooting using the Live View function.
New Live View Function
The K20D features a Live View function that allows users to view an image on the LCD monitor during shooting. This feature is beneficial when the photographer moves his or her eye from the viewfinder in specialized applications, such as low and high-angle shooting, or when perfecting composition. The function also allows users to confirm the Shake-Reduction effect on the monitor while shooting.
High-performance, High-speed PRIME Imaging Engine
The K20D incorporates the Pentax-original PRIME (Pentax Real IMage Engine). Designed exclusively for Pentax digital SLR cameras, the engine ensures well-balanced, true-to-life images with faithful color reproduction by efficiently controlling digital signals transmitted by the CMOS image sensor. It also allows complete control over other photographic factors including white balance and the new Custom Image functions. This imaging engine also features a Double Data Rate 2 (DDR2) memory to assure speedy image processing and high-speed data transfer.
Custom Image Function
The K20D is equipped with a new Custom Image function that lets the user select one of the six modes and adjust an image'S processing to their preference by automatically adjusting tone, saturation, contrast, and sharpness. These modes include Natural, Bright, Portrait, Landscape, Vibrant, and B&W image modes. The photographer can make further fine-tuned adjustments to each setting. The effect on each of the primary colors is shown in a radar-type display on the LCD panel. The user can easily see the effect of their adjustments by using the digital preview option.
Expanded Dynamic Range Function
The K20D adds a dynamic-range expansion function, which allows the user to expand the dynamic range (or range of gradation reproduction) while retaining the proper contrast to avoid white-washed areas. With an approximately 1EV expansion effect, it assures beautiful, rich-gradation images.
Dust-proof, Water-resistant Construction
The K20D boasts an extremely reliable weather-resistant and dust-proof construction with special seals applied to 72 different parts of the camera body, including the shutter release button and all the switches, levers, dials. This dependable body makes it possible to use the K20D in the rain or dusty locations without worries.
Comprehensive Dust Removal System With Prevention, Removal and Alerting Devices
The K20D features the user-friendly Dust Removal system to prevent dust from sticking to the surface of the CMOS image sensor (or low-pass filter). The Pentax-original Super Protect (SP) coating, applied to the image sensor surface through vapor deposition of a fluorine compound, effectively prevents dust from sticking to the surface. In the next step, dust that may remain on the surface will be shaken off when the system shifts the image sensor at high speed. Finally, the dust that is shaken off the image sensor falls onto an adhesive strip positioned at the bottom of the unit, eliminating any possibility of the dust returning to the image sensor surface. This upgraded Dust Reduction system also offers a new Dust Alert function, which shows the user exactly where dust may be sticking to the sensor surface.
Hyper Program Function
The K20D'S Hyper Program function allows users to instantly switch to the Shutter-Priority or Aperture-Priority AE mode from the Programmed AE mode with a simple turn of the electronic dials on the grip. To return to the Programmed AE mode, simply press the green button positioned next to the shutter release button.
Hyper Manual Function
When shooting in Manual mode, one push of the green button allows the user to instantly set the proper exposure for the subject.
Sensitivity-Priority Mode
The K20D features a unique Sensitivity-Priority (Sv) mode designed to automatically select the optimum combination of aperture and shutter speed for a user-selected sensitivity. The sensitivity can be shifted instantly in 1/2 or 1/3 steps by turning the electronic dial on the back panel.
Shutter/Aperture-Priority Mode
Taking full advantage of the unique capability of digital cameras, which permit automatic shift of sensitivity at any time, the Shutter/Aperture-Priority (TAv) mode automatically selects the most appropriate sensitivity for a user-selected shutter-speed/aperture combination. This mode allows users to experiment with a greater range of photographic expressions with greater ease.
Bright, Clear Viewfinder
Featuring a glass pentaprism, the K20D'S viewfinder offers an approximately 95 percent field of view and an approximately 0.95X magnification for easy viewing of the subject and effortless confirmation of focus and composition. Coupled with the acclaimed Natural-Bright-Matte II focusing screen, it delivers a large, bright subject image.
Continuous Shooting at Approximately Three Images Per Second
To trace the movement of an active subject or capture a sequence of the subject'S expressions, the K20D offers a continuous shooting mode that allows the photographer to capture as many as 38 images in succession (in JPEG recording format) at a maximum speed of approximately three images (frames) per second. When switched to the new high-speed advance mode, the user may capture up to approximately 115 images at the speed of approximately 21 images per second (The image size is fixed at 1.6 megapixels in the Burst Shooting mode).
High-precision 11-point wide-frame AF
The K20D'S sophisticated Safox VIII autofocus system features 11 sensor points (with nine cross-type sensors) to automatically focus on the subject with utmost precision, even when it is positioned off center. When the subject is captured in focus, the in-focus sensor point is automatically superimposed in red in the viewfinder for at-a-glance confirmation.
Powerful Rechargeable Batteries
The K20D features large capacity Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, which can capture approximately 740 images* when fully charged. The dramatically improved battery capacity (over the previous K10D) is the result of a new energy saving design.

In response to market demands to continue the development of DSLR technologies for new applications, Hasselblad today announces the H3DII-39MS, a multi-shot version of the recently announced H3DII-39 DSLR that will deliver digital images of the finest quality for architectural and still life photography. Previously available only on Hasselblad multi-shot digital backs, much of the multi-shot technology in the new H3DII-39MS comes from the extremely popular 39 megapixel Hasselblad CF-39MS digital back. Combining the benefits of the CF-39MS’s multi-shot technology with the full functionality and integration of the H3DII-39 DSLR, the H3DII-39MS completely eliminates the need to interpolate images and enables both single- and multi-shot DSLR capability, giving photographers the ultimate in flexibility and moiré-free image quality.

H3DII-39MS users will gain the full benefits of all the key features of the new H3DII DSLR system, providing outstanding pixel resolution, better colors, and improved detail rendering. Such features include a new RAW converter; Ultra-Focus™, which compensates for minute changes in the plane of focus resulting from changes in aperture; and DAC-Digital Auto Correction™, which offers digital APO correction, digital distortion correction, and now anti-vignetting to deliver for the first time full digital lens correction, when used with Hasselblad HC and HCD lenses.

The H3DII-39MS will not be film compatible, but, as with the H3D and H3DII product families, will offer photographers the ability to use the digital magazine, which contains the sensor unit and related technology, on a view camera via an adapter.

Further acknowledging the specific demands of film photographers, Hasselblad is also announcing the H2F, a simplified, film-only version of the H2 camera, which it is replacing. By removing the highend digital imaging technology found in the H2, which is unnecessary for shooting with the film-only H2F, and therefore simplifying the manufacturing process, Hasselblad is able to offer the H2F at a substantially lower price than the H2. The H2F offers full compatibility with H System HV viewfinders, film magazines, and HC lenses.

It is Hasselblad’s strategy to excel in the high-end segment of the photographic market and offer camera systems that deliver the best image quality and the most flexibility. While the company offers the premier DSLR solution with the H3DII product line and will support the legacy of film photography with the H2F camera, market demand does not justify the cost of maintaining the additional manufacturing line for the dual-platform H2. In keeping with its customer-centric modus operandi, Hasselblad will, however, continue to offer service and support for H1 and H2 owners for a minimum of 7 years from date of purchase. Meanwhile, the H3DII, H3DII-39MS and the H2F are being assembled in Copenhagen, Denmark and Gothenburg, Sweden, on new production lines engineered specifically for their unique designs and assembly requirements.

The H3DII-39MS will be available from January 2008 and the H2F from November 2007 worldwide through Hasselblad’s national subsidiaries and channel partners with a retail price of €33,500 for the H3DII-39MS, and €2,100 for the H2F camera body and €6,460 for the H2F camera kit, excluding tax. An attractive trade-in program has been announced that enables current Hasselblad users, as well as users of third party digital backs, to upgrade to the H3DII system, including the H3DII-39MS.

Hasselblad’s H3D line of products today achieve a new level of digital maturity and integration with the launch of the H3D-II, the fourth iteration of the camera system and one that can now justifiably lay claim to be the world’s finest digital SLR camera. Offering unsurpassed image quality delivered through an outstanding combination of hardware, software and lenses, the H3D-II is the clear leader in the high-end DSLR category, now a recognized segment of the photographic market.

A complete DSLR that is much more than the sum of its parts, the H3D-II is peerless in terms of its combined image quality and flexibility. While retaining its full digital lens line and the choice of 22, 31 or 39 megapixel capture units using CCD image sensors up to 48x36 mm – the largest currently available and more than twice the size of even the largest 35mm camera sensors – the H3D-II now has a large, bright 3” display, which affords both improved viewing of captured images and lower power consumption.

Reflecting the higher level of integration in the system, all the key functions of the camera are adjusted via digital menus, which can now be controlled via an intuitive thumbwheel control on the handle of the H3D-II, making the operation of the camera easier and more efficient. A new separate button for direct control of ISO settings and white balance has also been added to the camera controls.

To optimize the digital image quality of a DSLR, Hasselblad has identified the following key system components: an excellent optical system, comprising the best lenses twinned with the largest possible sensor format; full integration to enable lens correction and Hasselblad’s own Ultra-Focus; and the best possible RAW converter. With all these components in place, the result is Hasselblad’s STAR Quality images, photographic flexibility and a truly professional appearance.

In the H3D-II, Hasselblad has addressed each of the system components above to provide an unprecedented level of image quality that outperforms any professional digital camera system on the market today, delivering outstanding pixel resolution, better colors, and improved detail rendering. When used with Hasselblad HC and HCD lenses, the camera system offers full digital lens correction through its DAC-Digital Auto Correction, which, in addition to chromatic aberration and distortion, can now correct for vignetting phenomena.

Image noise in the H3D-II has been significantly reduced by improving the cooling of the sensor, achieved by attaching to the CCD a physical heatsink, which dissipates the heat generated to the entire camera body and considerably lowers the temperature of the system. As a component of Hasselblad’s revolutionary forthcoming image processing software, Phocus, the Hasselblad RAW Converter (HRC)also has an amazing anti-moiré capability which will eliminate moiré from any 3FR files, including even reprocessed images shot in 3FR on previous generations of Hasselblad cameras.

Demonstrating Hasselblad’s drive for continuous technical innovation, the H3D-II also features Hasselblad’s Global Image Locator (GIL), a unique integrated GPS product that automatically recordsthe camera‘s exact geographic co-ordinates at the precise moment of image capture. This data is integrated into the metadata of a specific image file and used together with the Hasselblad‘s newimaging software, Phocus, to allow images to be located on a map or found in a computer file system using the GPS coordinates as a search term. All the image files shot or stored in a specific location can be easily identified and found. As a direct link to Google Earth has also been built into Hasselblad’s Phocus software, it is also possible to establish via the internet what image files were captured at any particular location. With Google’s functionality, the user can also view their GPS tagged images, “fly” between them and even into them.

Fuelled by the introduction of models offering 3-megapixel-plus imaging and other advanced features, the digital camera market continues to experience explosive growth. A number of digital SLRs have also been introduced, but with respect to price and product availability, virtually all of these have been aimed at the photojournalist and professional markets.
Olympus Optical Co., Ltd., however, has emphasized the development of consumer-oriented models since it first entered the digital camera market. In the fall of 1997, it introduced its first digital SLR, the CAMEDIA C-1400L. This was followed in the fall of 1999 by the CAMEDIA C-2500L digital SLR. Now, with the launch of the CAMEDIA E-10, it has a flagship digital SLR that breaks significant new ground in terms of image quality and functionality. Despite being brought to market at moderate price, the CAMEDIA E-10 offers truly outstanding photo-imaging quality, functionality, reliability and features. As such, it brings ultra-high digital SLR performance to a much wider market segment than ever before.
The CAMEDIA E-10 is the first camera in its class to feature a 4-megapixel*, 2/3-inch, primary-color CCD. In addition, by freeing its lens designers from the constraints of conventional 35mm-format interchangeable lens design, Olympus was able to develop a new 4x optical zoom lens that is specifically designed to match the size and performance characteristics of CAMEDIA E-10's CCD. In addition to offering 4x zoom, the lens has the exceptional light-gathering power of an F2-F2.4 aperture range. One ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and two aspherical lens elements are used to assure excellent edge-to-edge resolving power, and all lens elements are multicoated to limit internal reflection and assure crisp, clear imaging. Other advanced features include TruePic image processing, which assures that 4-megapixel image data is accurately represented at all output resolutions, and a new white-balance function for superior image quality in a wide range of shooting situations.
A shutter-release lag-time of only about 60 milliseconds was achieved by using a proprietary new auto exposure algorithm and a dual active/passive autofocus system for high-speed focusing. As a result, responsiveness and shooting ease are truly outstanding.
A variety of extension lenses, external flash unit "FL-40 electronic flash" and a remote cable and a wireless remote control are also available, making the CAMEDIA E-10 a digital SLR camera that is fully able to meet the needs of commercial and professional users.

1. Professional-Oriented, Ultra-High Image Quality
4-Megapixel 2/3-Inch Primary-Color CCD At 4,000,000 pixels (3,900,000 effective), the CAMEDIA E-10's CCD imaging device offers the highest resolution currently available in a consumer-use digital camera. In addition, the CCD's large, 2/3-inch imaging area ensures excellent tonal sensitivity, while primary-color filtering is used to ensure vivid color reproduction.
Large-Aperture, High-Performance 4x Optical Zoom Lens
The lens is an F2-F2.4, equivalent to 35-140mm (in a 35mm format) bright, large-aperture zoom lens that is specifically designed to maximize the imaging potential of the camera's CCD. An ED glass lens element minimizes color aberration, and two aspherical lens elements correct distortion. In addition, all lens elements are multi-coated to ensure exceptionally crisp imaging.
Proprietary TruePic Image Processing
A refined version of the TruePic processing algorithm introduced on the CAMEDIA C-2500L ensures superior image quality at any resolution. As a result, even small images can take full advantage of the CCD's 4-megapixel imaging power.
Digital ESP Metering for Correct Exposures
New auto-exposure algorithms assure balanced exposures. In addition, the camera offers a choice of center-weighted average metering or spot metering.
New White-Balance System for Natural Skin Tones
A newly developed white-balance system provides more accurate assessment of white values than previous systems. Color fidelity is enhanced, and skin tones are more natural and lifelike.

Dual Autofocus System for Quick Focusing
Fast, accurate focusing is provided by an advanced dual autofocus system that combines single-beam, twin-sensor active AF technology with passive AF technology. After initial measurement is made with the single-beam, twin sensor system, fine tuning is carried out with the passive system. In extreme low-light conditions, the twin-sensor active system alone can be used, thus greatly extending the range of situations in which digital photographs can be taken.
Shutter-Release Lag Time of Only 60ms (approx.)
A shutter-release lag-time is only about 60 milliseconds when LCD monitor and internal flash are turned off. Shutter release is smooth and responsive for stress-free shooting.
4-Shot Continuous Shooting at Speeds Up To 3 fps
A 32MB buffer memory and dedicated ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) provide high-speed image processing for megapixel images. As a result, continuous shooting capability is offered in all image quality modes, up to a maximum of four frames at three frames-per-second.
High-Capacity Lithium-Polymer Battery Support

TTL Viewfinder with 95% Field of View
The TTL viewfinder eliminates framing errors caused by parallax displacement and provides a field of view that covers 95% of the total image area. Indicators within the viewfinder allow essential settings to be confirmed without taking the eye away from the eyepiece. In addition, the eyepiece features -3 - +1 dioptric correction and a special shutter that prevents light from entering the eyepiece when a picture is taken.
Multi-Angle 1.8-Inch TFT Color LCD Monitor
A quick-response 1.8-inch color LCD monitor allows captured images to be instantly viewed. It can also be used as a viewfinder, with multi-angle display that provides a clear view for waist-level or high-angle shooting.
Fast, Easy Mode Selection
Individual buttons are provided for all frequently used shooting modes, and are positioned for easy access when the camera is held in the normal shooting grip.
Advanced Flash Control System
A powerful GN13 (ISO 80) pop-up flash is built-in. Featuring advanced 'scene detection' technology, it automatically adjusts flash illumination to suit the subject's position, assuring beautiful auto flash exposures. +/- 2-step flash power compensation can also be used to achieve an ideal balance between natural light and flash illumination. In addition to forced (fill-in), slow-synchro and red-eye reduction modes, the flash also offers rear-curtain synchronization. An optional FL-40 external flash unit can also be connected via hot shoe or cable for full-auto, dual-flash shooting, and an external PC synchro socket allows other external flash units to be connected for multi-flash shooting.
Wide Selection of Exposure Modes
Four exposure modes are offered: Program AE, Aperture-Priority AE, Shutter-Speed- Priority AE, and Manual. Aperture and shutter speed can be quickly set via an electronic dial, and an AE Lock button is positioned so that it can easily be pressed with the right thumb. The wide range of exposure settings allows photographers to take full advantage of the exceptionally bright lens, and to easily capture long bulb exposures at night.
Versatile Exposure Control
+/- 3EV exposure compensation can be set in 1/3EV-step increments. With Auto bracketing function, the camera can shoot sequent shots of 3 frames in 1/3, 2/3 and 1EV steps.
Three White Balance Modes
In addition to Auto White Balance, one-touch White Balance can be stored in memory to assure correct color balance when shooting under various types of light source. Photographers can also achieve the precise color balance they want by choosing from seven manual White Balance settings (3000K, 3700K, 4000K, 4500K, 5500K, 6500K and 7500K).
Three Image Sharpness Settings
Hard, Normal and Soft image sharpness settings allow photographers to choose the level of image sharpness that best suits their purpose (i.e., printing, image manipulation, etc.).
Three Contrast Settings
High, Normal and Low contrast settings can be selected according to the photographer's preference.
Manual Focus
A focusing ring is provided to allow easy manual focusing when shooting subjects that are difficult for the autofocus system to handle.
Macro Mode
Macro photos can be taken from as close as 20cm at any zoom setting. At maximum magnification, an area of 76mm x 57mm fills the frame.
SmartMedia and CompactFlash Memory Card Support
Slots are provided for both 3V (3.3V) SmartMedia and CompactFlash memory cards of up to 128MB. Both types can be used simultaneously to extend memory capacity for worry-free, high-resolution shooting. The slots are linked, and a dedicated button is provided for slot switching. In addition, images can be copied from one card to the other at any time.
Raw Image Data File Storage
Unprocessed, raw data can be saved to allow subsequent high-level processing for printing or commercial purposes. A dedicated Adobe(r) Photoshop(r) plug-in will be also provided.
USB Support
A USB interface is provided to facilitate downloading of large image files. In addition, USB Storage Class support allows image files to be accessed using standard personal computer directory protocols.
