• Exploring the on-board controls

• Shooting in auto mode

• Situational shooting

• Getting pics onto a PC for editing

• Printing, posting online, and other ways to share images

From Stylus SW Cameras to Stylus Tough Series

Olympus Rebrands Stylus SW Cameras To Stylus Tough Series
Olympus, the company that introduced shockproof/waterproof digital compact cameras (Stylus 720 SW) in 2006 to mass consumers with active lifestyles, is now redefining the segment it continues to dominate. Starting with its Spring 2009 line-up in January, Olympus’ incredibly rugged cameras built to capture amazing images in aquatic adventures, harsh climates and everyday activities with kids will be rebranded "Stylus Tough."
"Consumers' passion and excitement for our tough cameras has continued to grow throughout the last three years, and they love the freedom of being able to capture beautiful images where other cameras wouldn’t dare to venture," said Mark Huggins, executive director, Brand Marketing, Olympus Imaging America Inc. "Once our innovations moved beyond purely shockproof and waterproof – some Olympus cameras offer freezeproof and crushproof – the SW name became limiting. The Stylus Tough brand will be more descriptive and visual, and will provide us with greater flexibility as we grow this and other camera lines."
The current line-up of Stylus SW cameras offers different levels of durability, providing consumers with options that best meet their needs. Cameras that are shockproof and waterproof are perfect for those who want worryproof, kidproof or lifeproof shooting. Building on these original tough features, other cameras also offer freezeproof and crushproof capabilities for those who seek adventure from the highest slopes to the most tropical depths and want to take their cameras anywhere to capture brilliant images.
The new Stylus Tough brand will enable the company to expand the line-up beyond these current tough benefits, and will be even easier for consumers to quickly understand the cameras’ unique benefits. If it is not waterproof, shockproof, and freezeproof, then by Olympus standards, it is not "Tough." It also allows the company to offer one or more of these unique features in other Olympus camera lines. According to a recent study, many consumers looking for a new digital camera chose durable, weatherproofing as a feature they desire.
Olympus continues to be an innovator, developing new technologies to expand the frontiers of digital photography and leading where others have followed. Proof that Olympus enables consumers to capture it all.
Specific details on the current Stylus SW cameras are available at http://www.getolympus.com/.
The new Stylus Tough cameras will be introduced in early January 2009.

Jobo PhotoGPS Geocoding

This post has been updated in April 2010

Jobo photoGPS is a small and lightweight Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver that fits directly on any digital camera’s hot shoe, just as if it were a regular flash unit, without the need for extra cables. Through an innovative new capture and process technology, this affordable new device allows automatic geo-tagging by capturing raw GPS data and time which enables new and more efficient ways to organize, search, visualize, and share photo collections.

In response to today’s mobile lifestyles, geo-tagging of photographs is becoming an increasingly popular technology for today’s picture-taking consumers,” said Johannes Bockemuehl-Simon, Jobo’s CEO. “Jobo’s new photoGPS has been designed to be easy-to-use and extremely compact allowing it to be a travel-friendly accessory for people wanting to share the joy of their adventurous lifestyle with others. Other mostly organizer-based geo-tagging solutions can be both expensive and/or cumbersome. Our goal at Jobo was to automate this process, which we have accomplished with our breakthrough new photoGPS and capture and process technology enabling photographers to find specific images that they want to share within seconds.”

Each time a photographer’s digital camera takes a picture with the photoGPS attached to the camera’s hot shoe, Jobo’s photoGPS automatically captures raw GPS data too and stores this information in its own internal memory. When the photographer has finished taking photographs, they unload their photos onto their PC in their normal way and transfer the companion raw GPS data information onto the PC with the included Jobo photoGPS software. Matching times and locations is quick and easy, since the photos and raw GPS data were captured simultaneously.

Next, the Jobo photoGPS server (accessible via the Internet) provides historic GPS satellite information corresponding to the times the raw GPS data was recorded. This is used by JOBO’s PC software to calculate the locations, reverse geocodes them, and geotags the photos with the resulting location information such as Country name, Region and District, City, Postal code, Street name, and nearby points of interest (POIs) such as tourist attractions, beaches, mountain peaks, museums, opera or theatre houses, concert halls, sport stadiums, parks, etc. In addition, Latitude, Longitude and Altitude are also available. And the Jobo photoGPS consumes very little power. One capture just needs 18 Megajoule (MJ). It is the camera’s flash synchronization connection that instantly awakens photoGPS.

The JOBO photoGPS includes USB cable, user’s manual, PC compatible CD-ROM featuring photoGPS matching software for Geocoding and Reverse Geocoding, iTag Photo-Organizer by IPTC Data, and Irfan View, a powerful Image viewer with EXIF / IPTC function. The Jobo photoGPS is expected to be available for Windows operating systems in October 2008. Mac OS versions will be released by the end of 2008. Suggested retail price for the Jobo photoGPS is € 159,00.

April 2010 Update - Improvements to photoGPS Reverse Geocoding Service in two categories:

1) Improved results specifically for Japan due to incorporation of additional data sources. The algorithms have been modified in order to generate results which better fit the expectations of Japanese users.

2) Improved coverage. Using the latest updates from Open Street Map increases photoGPS’ database coverage. Specifically:

  • Number of streets up 23%
  • Number of municipalities up 42% to 800.000
  • Number of POIs up 27%

Users do not need to do anything to take advantage of these improvements. The photoGPS software will automatically make use of the improved Reverse Geocoding Service.

IR Photo Filter Allows Infrared Photography with the Mamiya ZD Digital Back

Mamiya has announced the release of an IR Photo filter for the Mamiya ZD Digital back
"Today’s CCD sensors are highly sensitive to infrared light," said Jeff Karp, Mamiya Product Marketing Manager, "and the IR Cut filter built into cameras reduces infrared light transmission. The result is more accurate and natural color. This IR Cut filter, however, makes infrared photography impossible. In response to the large number of requests from infrared photographers, especially with the scarcity of infrared film, this filter was created."
Mamiya developed the IR Photo Filter for use on the Mamiya ZD Digital Back. The IR Photo Filter YD401 (which replaces the standard IR Cut Filter) is a clear filter that allows the transmission of infrared light as well as visible light rays.
"Unlike specialized IR cameras or modified systems," states Karp, "the Mamiya ZD Digital Back can be transformed from standard digital to IR digital, simply by changing the user-replaceable sensor filters."
Photographers will need to add an infrared filter (89B or 87) on the front of the lens to produce typical infrared images with dramatic dark skies, glowing greens and "magical" skin tones.
It is available mid-January 2008.

Mamiya ZD 22 MP Digital Back

Mamiya Teams Up with Adobe Systems and Introduces the Mamiya ZD 22 Megapixel Digital Back
Mamiya Digital announced the release of the new Mamiya ZD 22 megapixel Digital Back. The Mamiya ZD Back is compatible with the Mamiya 645AFD II, 645AFD and RZ67 Pro IID, cameras popular among professional photographers and advanced amateurs.
Mamiya’s careful planning in the design of the communication protocol MSCE (Mamiya Serial Communication for External) has successfully optimized two-way communication between our cameras and the digital back,” states Jeff Karp, Mamiya Product Marketing Manager, “this produces a unified operating experience identical to using a one-piece digital camera.”
From the icon-based white balance settings, to the ability to shoot at 1.2 frames per second, to the option of controlling the camera through a computer, the Mamiya ZD Digital Back provides the features and tools needed to easily produce beautiful images. To make this experience even easier, Mamiya will include Adobe Photoshop Lightroom with all ZD Backs.
Save files as RAW, JPEG or both at the same time
The advantages are significant. For optimum results you should save your shots in RAW format. This allows maximum post-shooting manipulation. For high quality images that need to be placed into other programs, use JPEG mode. No special programs or “processing” is needed. However, when you need highest quality plus a file that can quickly be used for positioning only (FPO) in layouts, or quick review, you can shoot both at the same time and process the RAW file later.
Compact Flash and SD Card Compatible
By having the choice of cards (both can be inserted at the same time) you get additional flexibility of storage options. You could tell the back to record to CF, then to SD without the need to remove/replace the card. This lets you keep shooting. It also guarantees you will be able to go to any store in the world and find a compatible storage card. A 4 GB card can store approximately 100 frames of RAW images.
Exclusive Interchangeable IR/Low Pass Filter System
To suit a variety of photographic scenes, the standard IR (infrared) cut filter can be interchanged with the optional Low-Pass filter. The Low-Pass filter reduces or removes moiré effect which makes unusual patterns when photographing clothing and also fixes aliasing. Aliasing is seen when a thin straight line is slightly tilted with respect to the array of pixels. The line will be on one line of pixels, then jump to the next, then to the next, producing a “stairstep” effect. The ability to decide which filter to use guarantees the best possible results over a wide range of situations.
Lightroom software included with the ZD Back
Mamiya is the first camera manufacturer to include Lightroom software with every Mamiya ZD Digital Back. Lightroom is an all-new digital imaging solution for serious and professional photographers. Its ease of operation and ability to read Mamiya RAW digital files makes it the perfect choice for photographers looking for a modular, task-based and streamlined program that delivers a complete photographic workflow solution.

Six kits with the Olympus E-330 digital SLR

The Olympus E-330 digital SLR available in a choice of six kits for specific applications
Whether for travel, medical, macro, nature, architectural or underwater photography – and just about anything in between – Olympus introduce six kits to accompany the sales start of the E-330 digital SLR, and thereby provide customised, professional solutions for virtually any photographic situation.
Key element in each of the kits is, of course, the Olympus E-330 body.
It is the world’s first digital SLR to provide continuous Live Previews. Now, instead of being forced to frame compositions by looking through the viewfinder, photographers have the freedom of framing while looking at the Live Preview on the camera’s large 6.4cm HyperCrystal LCD.
Extending usability even further, the screen can be tilted up 90° and down 45° to provide unparalleled shooting and framing ease.
Image quality, speed and sensitivity are second to none thanks to the incorporation of a latest-generation Live MOS sensor with 7.5 million pixels.
Naturally, as with all cameras in the Olympus E-System range, the E-330 is equipped with the Olympus-exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter which eliminates the danger of dust entering the camera body and settling on the image sensor.
Specially designed for individual photographic requirements, these six kits for the Olympus E-330 open up new avenues for creative and qualitative digital SLR photography. Each provides users with the power and versatility they need to execute their task at hand.
  • Pro Kit
  • Travelling Pro Kit
  • Medical and Macro Pro Kit
  • Architecture Pro Kit
  • Nature Pro Kit
  • Underwater Pro Kit
The kits will be available from mid-March 2006, the Underwater Pro Kit from mid-April 2006.

Compact Samsung Digimax i5

Samsung Releases the Inner Zoom Type Slim Digital i-5 Camera
Samsung Techwinhas announced that it is releasing a new-concept slim digital camera. The 5 mega-pixel, 3x optical zoom digital camera i-5 is the brainchild of the ¡®Slim, Stylish & Smart¡ concept.
With the ambition of capturing the slim-type digital camera market, Samsung Techwin spent about 5 million dollars over a period of 8 months on research and development for the i-5, which is the first Samsung product to incorporate inner zoom technology, which give the camera its slim (17.3mm) design.
Unlike the competing products, the body is made of stainless steel, which has exceptional durability against scratches and shocks.
The product is available in fashionable silver, red, black and gray colors.
The SF (safety flash) function, Samsung Techwin¡'s unique technology, has also been upgraded substantially to minimize camera shake and obtain much more natural colors when taking indoor pictures without using flash. This technology is expected to attract attention from younger consumers, since turning the flash off can protect young people¡'s eyesight, and also produces more natural pictures in places like the inside of cafes.
Responding to consumer need for larger and clearer displays, the i-5 incorporates a 230,000-pixel, large 2.5-inch TFT LCD, which provides viewing of much larger and clearer images as well as achieving higher contrast and more vividness of color.
The video (MPEG-4, VGA, 30fps) function, the inherent strength of Samsung Digimax products, is now available with 3x optical zoom during shooting. This product is a good alternative to conventional camcorders as it can shoot videos of up to 2 hours and 10 minutes with only 256MB of memory.
Technological know-how accumulated over a long period has made it possible to improve resolution, exposure and AWB (auto white balance) accuracy, and increase the initial start-up and shot-to-shot speeds. Also, the product can be charged using a 24-pin mobile phone charger approved by the Korean TTA (Telecommunications Technology Association), providing the convenience and portability suitable for a slim camera.
A Samsung Techwin spokesperson told the press that the product includes a number of advanced multimedia functions, unlike other slim-type products that only put emphasis on portability and design. The ¡®Slim, Stylish & Smart¡ concept puts into the consumer's hand not only a slim and stylish design, but also a variety of useful functions, giving them true satisfaction.

Sanyo XACTI C1 Dual Shot Function

This is a cross-over product unites the digital camera and digital camcorder in a single device. Thanks to its ergonomic form, the stylish aluminum housing of Sanyo's latest ultra-compact fits your hand perfectly.

With 3.2 Megapixels, the XACTI can deliver colorful photos and entertaining movie clips with true VGA resolution. The proven SD card storage medium eliminates costly drive mechanisms. The result: A camera with a small and robust construction.

A true innovation: The digital data is stored in MPEG4 format. With a 512 MB storage card, the Digital Movie C1 can record 31 minutes of video in TV mode (640x480 resolution at 30 frames/sec.). Despite its limited storage space requirements, the MPEG4 standard delivers dazzling, high-resolution recordings – with rich 16-bit stereo sound at all times.

The data recorded in the MPEG4 format is transferred to a computer, television or DVD recorder using the supplied accessories: Either the Docking Station or USB/AV cable. Thanks to the ultra-fast USB 2.0 port, captured images and video can be transferred to computers or hi-fi units in no time at all. Because the MPEG4 format is already recognized and reproduced by numerous devices, the recorded films can be stored on other storage media directly – without time-consuming conversions to other file formats.

The "Dual Shot Function" is truly a world's first: Individual images can be taken in full 3.2 Megapixel resolution even while recording video.

Like all SANYO products, camera operation is simple and well-designed. All of the camera's functions are easily controlled with your right thumb. Olympus Camedia C-720 Ultra Zoom Digital Camera

Olympus Camedia C-720 Ultra Zoom Digital Camera

Olympus Camedia C-720 Ultra Zoom Digital Camera
Summary
The CAMEDIA C-720 Ultra Zoom is an upgraded version of the CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom (introduced in April 2001) that has been widely acclaimed for its high zoom power and compact design. While retaining the advanced functions, outstanding ease of use, and affordable pricing that made its predecessor a worldwide success, the new CAMEDIA C-720 Ultra Zoom adds a 3-megapixel CCD for even higher image quality. Plus, it features new all-in-one packaging that includes a variety of connecting cables and advanced new image-editing software.
Combining the advanced functionality that expert photographers demand with the ease of use that entry-level users require, the CAMEDIA C-720 Ultra Zoom is the smallest and lightest digital camera equipped with an 8x optical zoom lens in the world to offer ultra-high zoom power.
Top Features
High-performance 3-megapixel imaging and exclusive image processing technology
High-power 8x optical zoom for ultra-telephoto shooting
Compact and exceptionally easy to handle Simple enough for entry-level users to operate
Development Background
Olympus first opened the door to compact, affordable, ultra-high zoom power when it introduced the CAMEDIA C-2100 Ultra Zoom (August 2000) and the CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom (April 2001), both of which featured zoom lenses with a level of telephoto power that would be prohibitively bulky and expensive to achieve on a conventional 35mm film camera. As digital cameras have grown in popularity, however, some users have come to demand higher image quality than that offered by 2-megapixel cameras. It was in response to this demand that the 3-megapixel CAMEDIA C-720 Ultra Zoom was developed. Now, users can choose between 2-megapixel convenience and 3-megapixel image quality, and enjoy ultra-high zoom power with either choice.
Main Features
3-Megapixel CCD for Superior Image Quality
A 3.34-megapixel CCD is used to ensure truly outstanding image quality, even on large, A4-size prints or when cropping and enlarging images. In addition, the advanced TruePic image processing technology featured on our top-of-the-line CAMEDIA E-20 digital SLR is also included to enhance image clarity and color fidelity.
High-Performance 8x Optical Zoom Lens
The lens is a bright, high-performance, F2.8 - 3.4 8x optical zoom lens that incorporates one glass aspherical element and one element that is aspherical on both sides. The zoom range is equivalent to 40 - 320mm on a 35mm film camera, eliminating the need for interchangeable lenses, while high telephoto power makes it possible for users to shoot natural looking candid photos from a considerable distance. When used in combination with the digital seamless zoom function, a maximum of 24x magnification is offered (equivalent to 960mm telephoto on a 35mm film camera), making it easy to photograph sports events and, concerts, wildlife, and a wide range of other subjects.
Compact, Yet Easy to Hold and Handle
Despite its powerful, 8x zoom lens, the CAMEDIA C-720 Ultra Zoom measures only 107.5mm (W) x 76mm (H) x 77.5mm (D) (excluding protrusions), and weighs just 315g. Extremely compact and portable, it is exceptionally easy to hold and operate.
Exceptional Ease of Use
Convenient Menu-Based Setting-Selection System
Camera settings are controlled via the easy-to-use menu-based system first featured on the CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom. The menu's top-level directory features four tabs: one allows users to access all of the advanced settings; the other three can be customized to provide quick access to frequently used settings.
'My Mode' Setting For Personalized Image Control
A user-customizable 'My Mode' on the Mode Dial allows users to select their favorite combination of camera settings and register it in the camera's memory. They can then access these settings with one-touch ease at any time simply by selecting My Mode.
'Scene Program' Shooting Modes
The Mode Dial provides instant access to four programmed shooting modes (Portrait, Sports, Landscape-Portrait and Night Scene). Users simply choose the mode that matches the scene they wish to shoot; the camera automatically applies the appropriate exposure, contrast, sharpness, and color reproduction settings, assuring that even first-time users can obtain outstanding image quality.
Customizable One-Touch Button
The AE Lock Button is user-customizable and can be programmed to provide one-touch access to the user's favorite feature or function.
Easy-to-Use Function Buttons
Flash, exposure and macro mode settings each have their own independent button to allow easy adjustment. A separate ON/OFF switch is also provided.
Easy-to-Use Mode Dial
A Mode Dial on the top of the camera allows fast, easy mode selection, even for first-time users.
Video Cable
A video cable is bundled as standard equipment. It allows the camera to be connected directly to a TV so that photographs can be enjoyed with family and friends.
USB Cable
A quick-connect USB cable is bundled as standard equipment for fast, easy image file downloading.
'CAMEDIA Master 4.0' Image Processing and Management Software
CAMEDIA Master 4.0 image processing and file management software is bundled as standard equipment. Featuring a user-friendly interface that even computer novices can use with ease, the software makes it simple to download, edit, and organize image files. In addition, it allows calendars and photo albums to be created with point-and-click ease.
Other Features
Pre-Set White Balance Settings
In addition to Auto White Balance, four pre-set white balance settings are provided (Daylight, Overcast, Tungsten Light and Fluorescent Light). As a result, users can obtain correct color balance even if lighting conditions are too complex to be handled by the Auto White Balance function.
Versatile Flash Mode Settings
In addition to Auto Flash in low light and backlight, Red-Eye Reduction, Off, Fill-In, Night Scene, and Red-Eye Reduction Night Scene flash modes are provided.
1.5-Inch TFT Color LCD Monitor
A 114,000-pixel, 1.5-inch TFT LCD color monitor on the back of the camera provides bright, clear image display. It can be used as an external viewfinder when shooting, and to review images after shooting.
0.5-Inch TFT Color LCD Viewfinder
A built-in, 0.5-inch TFT color LCD viewfinder provides parallax-free viewing across the entire 8x zoom range. In addition, information about essential settings is displayed inside the viewfinder so that users can keep their eye to eyepiece when shooting.
Two Light Metering Modes
Two light metering modes are offered: digital ESP metering, which ensures natural-looking exposures even when shooting in backlight or high-contrast situations, and spot metering, which allows users to take a reading from a particular area of the composition to get the precise results they want.
Exposure Compensation and Auto-Bracketing
Exposure compensation of up to ±2EV can be set in 1/3-step increments. In addition, a convenient, three or five-shot, auto-bracketing function is provided. With auto-bracketing activated, the camera automatically 'brackets' a picture taken at standard exposure settings with two others taken at slightly higher and lower exposure settings.
Sharpness Settings
Hard, Normal and Soft image sharpness settings allow users to choose the level of image sharpness that best suits their purpose (i.e., printing, image manipulation, etc.).
Contrast Settings
Image contrast can be set to High, Normal or Low according to the user's preference.
ISO Sensitivity Settings
In addition to Auto, a choice of three fixed ISO sensitivity settings is offered. The settings are approximately equivalent to ISO 100, 200 and 400.
Continuous Shooting Mode
Continuous shooting is possible in all modes except TIFF. In HQ mode, up to five shots can be taken at a speed of approximately 1.2 frames per second.
Rotated Image Display
Captured images can be rotated by ±90 degrees for viewing. Pictures taken with the camera rotated for vertical framing will therefore be displayed on a TV.
LB-01 (CR-V3) Lithium Battery Pack
Two CR-V3 lithium batteries are bundled as standard equipment. The batteries provide sufficient power for approximately 8,000 pictures under continuous operating conditions, and approximately 450 pictures under normal operating conditions. In addition, optionally available NiMH batteries or an AC adapter, as well as commercially available NiCd or alkaline batteries, can also be used to power the camera.

Olympus Camedia C-3020 Zoom Digital Camera

Olympus Camedia C-3020 Zoom Digital Camera

Olympus Camedia C-3020 Zoom
(c) Olympus America Inc.

Olympus Camedia C-3020 Zoom Back
(c) Olympus America Inc.

Olympus America Inc., today announced the C-3020 ZOOM 3.2 Megapixel (2048 x 1536 effective pixel resolution) filmless digital zoom camera to its line of award-winning digital cameras. The C-3020 ZOOM offers consumers an easy-to-use point & shoot camera with all the creative controls of an advanced camera - all for only $499.

Although simplicity of operation is clearly a focus, the Olympus C-3020 ZOOM is much more than a point & shoot camera. The Olympus C-3020 ZOOM combines a large collection of creative control features and high picture quality in a compact easy-to-use design. Based on the familiar and well-established Olympus C-3000 series of digital cameras, most of the advanced features of the award-winning Olympus C-3000 ZOOM are included: a 3X optical zoom aspherical glass lens with continuous 2.5X digital telephoto for a 7.5X total seamless zoom (32-240mm equivalent); 6 mode flash with a slow synchro red-eye reduction mode; and a host of manual exposure adjustments - all for that perfect picture. In addition, DPOF compatibility in the camera allows for easy setup and printing of the photographs you select.

New in the Olympus C-3020 ZOOM is 5 Scene Program Modes, which make the perfect shot easy, plus the customizable "My Mode" setting; USB Auto-Connect ready for Windows XP and Mac OSX for fast downloads; user-friendly menu system; extended battery life; and Noise Reduction modes.

Unsurpassed Optics
Olympus digital cameras are well-known for their exceptionally high-quality images. Images captured with the Olympus C-3020 ZOOM produce photographs equivalent to that of many film-based cameras. This is achieved by a number of factors, including a "designed to be digital" truly world-class all glass 8-element 3X zoom lens with a fast f2.8-f11 aperture range, low compression ratios including an uncompressed mode, and a host of other sophisticated Olympus technologies. Because of these technologies, Olympus high quality images can be achieved above an 8" x 10" photo size.

New Features:

Noise Reduction System - Gives the user clean colors and sharp pictures. For exposures of 1/2 second or longer, the Noise Reduction Mode (when activated) automatically compares the original image with an image taken immediately after the first exposure with no light. This frame contains only the background noise. The Olympus C-3020 ZOOM then compares both images and cancels background noise in the original image for clearer, shaper pictures.

My Mode - Creates unique custom camera settings that can be accessed by simply turning the mode dial to the "My Mode" position.

New Scene Program Modes - Scene Program selects the perfect settings for portrait, sports, landscape-portrait, night-scene, and QuickTimeTM movie modes.

USB Auto-Connect - Connects to most any USB-compatible Windows computer (running Windows Me, 2000, or XP) or Macintosh (running MacOS 8.6 - OSX) in seconds. The camera is configured as an external hard disk for easy downloading of image files to computers without any additional software.

Extended Battery Life - New energy-saving circuitry gives longer battery life.

The Olympus C-3020 ZOOM will be available the end of October 2001 for $499. It includes a 16MB SmartMedia card, Auto-Connect USB cable, carrying strap, lens cap and retainer cord, 4 AA alkaline batteries, Camedia Master Software 2.5, manual, QuickStart Guide and remote control.

Suggested Retail Price: $599.95 Street Price: $499

Olympus Camedia C-700 Ultra Zoom Digital Camera

Olympus introduce the CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom, a compact, easy-to-handle digital camera equipped with a bright, powerful, F2.8 - 3.5 10x optical zoom lens. The lens has a zoom range that is equivalent to 38 - 380mm on a conventional 35mm, and when used in tandem with the built-in digital zoom function, offers the equivalent of 1000mm telephoto power. The camera offers full-auto shooting convenience, and its compact size makes it extremely easy to handle. Olympus introduced its first 10x optical zoom digital camera, the CAMEDIA C-2100 Ultra Zoom, in August 2000. It was a camera that made the most of the inherent advantages of digital technology, and made the light-gathering power and versatility of a bright, F2.8 - 3.5 10x optical zoom lens accessible for the first time -- because on a conventional silver-halide film camera, such a lens would have to be extremely large and costly to produce. The new CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom makes this power even more accessible and affordable. Although it is even lighter and more compact than its predecessor, it offers the same high image quality because the lens is specifically designed to match the performance characteristics of the camera's 2.11-megapixel CCD. In addition, the 10x optical zoom can be used in tandem with the digital zoom function to achieve maximum telephoto power of 1000mm.
The CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom also features iESP* auto focus, iESP auto white balance, digital ESP light metering, as well as Portrait, Sport and other auto exposure modes. As a result, it makes high quality, 10x zoom photography extremely easy to enjoy. It also features manual exposure control, auto bracketing, multi-spot metering, one-touch white balance settings, and a range of other features for greater creative control. Ease of use is enhanced by a new settings menu that can be displayed on the camera's built-in color LCD monitor, and the AE lock button can customized by the user to provide instant access to frequently used settings. Other features include motion JPEG recording, sepia and monochrome shooting modes, and a White/Black board shooting mode.
With its light, compact body and 10x optical zoom lens, the CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom combines superior image quality with the inherent performance advantages of digital technology to offer consumers an entirely new photographic experience.
* iESP=Intelligent Electro Selective Pattern
Main Features
Bright, High-Performance 10x Optical Zoom Lens in a Compact Body
The CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom measures only 107.5mm (W) x 76mm (H) x 77.5mm (D) (excluding protrusions) and weighs only 310.5 grams. The lens incorporates one glass aspherical element and one element that is aspherical on both sides. As a result, it is extremely compact despite offering the advantages of a bright F2.8 - 3.5 aperture range and powerful 10x optical zoom. The camera's light, compact design makes it easy to carry, while the lens allows photographers to shoot everyday subjects in dramatic new ways, and capture subjects that they never could before. When used in combination with the digital zoom function, a maximum of 27x magnification is possible (equivalent to 1000mm telephoto on a 35mm film camera).
Built-In High-Performance Features
High-Performance Zoom Lens and 2.11-Megapixel CCD for Superior Image Quality
Image quality is outstanding because the lens is specifically designed to maximize the imaging potential of the camera's 2,110,000-pixel, 1/2.7-inch CCD. In addition, users can shoot in either JPEG or uncompressed TIFF mode, at sizes ranging from 1600 x 1200 pixels to 640 x 480 pixels.
High-Accuracy iESP* Autofocus
iESP autofocusing improves conventional center-weighted contrast analysis accuracy by dividing the center portion of the image into a greater number of sectors when performing analysis. As a result, focusing accuracy is less likely to be affected by background elements when the primary subject is not in the center of the frame.
* iESP=Intelligent Electro Selective Pattern
iESP Auto White Balance for Accurate Color
Proprietary iESP auto white balance technology compares average values for the entire frame with values for the area immediately around the subject to accurately determine subject color and surrounding lighting conditions. As a result, users are assured of natural colors and skin tones under a wide range of lighting conditions.
Easy Handling and Operation
New, Easy-to-Use Settings Menu
The settings menu displayed on the camera's built-in color LCD monitor has been significantly improved for greater ease of use. The top-level directory displays one gateway that gives users access to all of the advanced settings, and three gateways that users can customize to provide quick access to the settings they use most frequently. Even when using the full-function advanced settings gateway, a new four-tab menu display (Shooting, Image Quality, Card, Settings) makes it easy for users to find the setting they are looking for.
Convenient User-Programmable Custom Button
The AE Lock button does double duty as a custom button that users can set to perform a particular function. It's a convenient way to access features with a single touch.
Easy-to-Operate Control Buttons
Separate buttons are provided for flash, light metering and macro mode controls to allow these frequently used features to be activated at a moment's notice. A separate ON/OFF switch is also provided.
0.55-Inch TFT Color LCD Monitor
A built-in, 0.55-inch TFT color LCD monitor provides parallax-free viewing across the entire 10x zoom range. In addition, information about essential settings is displayed inside the regular viewfinder so that users can keep their eye to eyepiece when shooting ultra-telephoto pictures, moving subjects and motion JPEGs.
Storage-Class* USB Interface
A storage-class USB interface and USB cable are provided for fast easy downloading of large image files. In addition, image files in the camera can be manipulated using Windows Explorer or other third-party software applications.
* Supported operating systems: Windows 98; Windows 2000 Professional; Windows Me; Mac OS 9.0 or higher.
Versatile Modes for Enhanced Creativity
Versatile Exposure Modes
In addition to Program AE, Aperture-Priority AE, Shutter-Speed-Priority AE, Manual exposure modes, the CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom features full-auto Portrait, Sports and Landscape Photo exposure modes. In Manual exposure mode, shutter speeds of up to 16 seconds can be set. An AE lock function is also provided.
A Choice of Light Metering Modes
In addition to digital ESP metering (for backlit and high-contrast situations), spot metering is also offered. In Spot mode, users can take up to eight readings and fine-tune their exposures to get the precise results they want.
Exposure Compensation and Auto-Bracketing
Exposure compensation of up to +-2EV can be set in 1/3-step increments. In addition, a convenient auto-bracketing function is provided to automatically adjust the exposure settings up and down from the standard setting to ensure that a perfectly exposed picture is always captured.
Versatile Flash Mode Settings
In addition to Auto, Red-Eye Reduction, Off and Fill-In flash modes, a Slow Shutter Synchronization mode (with first- or second-curtain effect) is offered. As a result, photographers can capture natural-looking images of people with a darkened room or city lights in the background, as well as 'trails' created by moving lights or other subjects.
4-Step Pre-Set White Balance Settings
In addition to Auto White Balance, pre-set white balance settings are provided for daylight, overcast, tungsten light and fluorescent light. As a result, users can obtain correct color balance even if lighting conditions are too complex to be handled by the Auto White Balance function.
ISO sensitivity can be adjusted to facilitate flash-free indoor photography, eliminate blurriness caused by camera shake at high telephoto settings, or otherwise achieve the user's creative goals. The settings are approximately equivalent to ISO 100, 200, 400 and 800.
Other Convenient Features
2.7x Digital Zoom for Telephoto Power Equivalent to 1000mm
2.7x digital zoom can be used in tandem with the 10x optical zoom lens to achieve seamless 27x zooming that offers maximum telephoto power equivalent to 1000mm on a conventional 35mm camera. The digital zoom can be used for both still and motion JPEG shooting.
Convenient File Name Setting
Consecutive numbering can be applied even when memory cards are removed and replaced, greatly simplifying image file management. Duplicate file and folder name problems are eliminated, and downloaded image files are much easier to organize and manage.
Special Shooting Modes
In addition to regular color images, the CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom can be used to take sepia or monochrome photos. There are also special White and Black board modes that automatically ensure maximum legibility when photographing text written on a white board or black board.
Continuous Shooting Mode
Continuous shooting is possible in all modes except TIFF. In HQ mode, more than six shots can be taken at a speed of approximately 1.5 frames per second.
Rotated Image Display
Captured images can be rotated by 90 degrees or 270 degrees for viewing. Pictures taken with the camera rotated for vertical framing will therefore be displayed with the correct orientation when viewed on the camera's LCD monitor, or as a slideshow displayed on a TV.
