High-power 8x optical zoom for ultra-telephoto shooting
Compact and exceptionally easy to handle Simple enough for entry-level users to operate
Development Background
Olympus first opened the door to compact, affordable, ultra-high zoom power when it introduced the CAMEDIA C-2100 Ultra Zoom (August 2000) and the CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom (April 2001), both of which featured zoom lenses with a level of telephoto power that would be prohibitively bulky and expensive to achieve on a conventional 35mm film camera. As digital cameras have grown in popularity, however, some users have come to demand higher image quality than that offered by 2-megapixel cameras. It was in response to this demand that the 3-megapixel CAMEDIA C-720 Ultra Zoom was developed. Now, users can choose between 2-megapixel convenience and 3-megapixel image quality, and enjoy ultra-high zoom power with either choice.
Main Features
3-Megapixel CCD for Superior Image Quality
A 3.34-megapixel CCD is used to ensure truly outstanding image quality, even on large, A4-size prints or when cropping and enlarging images. In addition, the advanced TruePic image processing technology featured on our top-of-the-line CAMEDIA E-20 digital SLR is also included to enhance image clarity and color fidelity.
High-Performance 8x Optical Zoom Lens
The lens is a bright, high-performance, F2.8 - 3.4 8x optical zoom lens that incorporates one glass aspherical element and one element that is aspherical on both sides. The zoom range is equivalent to 40 - 320mm on a 35mm film camera, eliminating the need for interchangeable lenses, while high telephoto power makes it possible for users to shoot natural looking candid photos from a considerable distance. When used in combination with the digital seamless zoom function, a maximum of 24x magnification is offered (equivalent to 960mm telephoto on a 35mm film camera), making it easy to photograph sports events and, concerts, wildlife, and a wide range of other subjects.
Compact, Yet Easy to Hold and Handle
Despite its powerful, 8x zoom lens, the CAMEDIA C-720 Ultra Zoom measures only 107.5mm (W) x 76mm (H) x 77.5mm (D) (excluding protrusions), and weighs just 315g. Extremely compact and portable, it is exceptionally easy to hold and operate.

Olympus America Inc., today announced the C-3020 ZOOM 3.2 Megapixel (2048 x 1536 effective pixel resolution) filmless digital zoom camera to its line of award-winning digital cameras. The C-3020 ZOOM offers consumers an easy-to-use point & shoot camera with all the creative controls of an advanced camera - all for only $499.

Although simplicity of operation is clearly a focus, the Olympus C-3020 ZOOM is much more than a point & shoot camera. The Olympus C-3020 ZOOM combines a large collection of creative control features and high picture quality in a compact easy-to-use design. Based on the familiar and well-established Olympus C-3000 series of digital cameras, most of the advanced features of the award-winning Olympus C-3000 ZOOM are included: a 3X optical zoom aspherical glass lens with continuous 2.5X digital telephoto for a 7.5X total seamless zoom (32-240mm equivalent); 6 mode flash with a slow synchro red-eye reduction mode; and a host of manual exposure adjustments - all for that perfect picture. In addition, DPOF compatibility in the camera allows for easy setup and printing of the photographs you select.

New in the Olympus C-3020 ZOOM is 5 Scene Program Modes, which make the perfect shot easy, plus the customizable "My Mode" setting; USB Auto-Connect ready for Windows XP and Mac OSX for fast downloads; user-friendly menu system; extended battery life; and Noise Reduction modes.

Unsurpassed Optics
Olympus digital cameras are well-known for their exceptionally high-quality images. Images captured with the Olympus C-3020 ZOOM produce photographs equivalent to that of many film-based cameras. This is achieved by a number of factors, including a "designed to be digital" truly world-class all glass 8-element 3X zoom lens with a fast f2.8-f11 aperture range, low compression ratios including an uncompressed mode, and a host of other sophisticated Olympus technologies. Because of these technologies, Olympus high quality images can be achieved above an 8" x 10" photo size.

New Features:

Noise Reduction System - Gives the user clean colors and sharp pictures. For exposures of 1/2 second or longer, the Noise Reduction Mode (when activated) automatically compares the original image with an image taken immediately after the first exposure with no light. This frame contains only the background noise. The Olympus C-3020 ZOOM then compares both images and cancels background noise in the original image for clearer, shaper pictures.

My Mode - Creates unique custom camera settings that can be accessed by simply turning the mode dial to the "My Mode" position.

New Scene Program Modes - Scene Program selects the perfect settings for portrait, sports, landscape-portrait, night-scene, and QuickTimeTM movie modes.

Olympus Camedia C-700 Ultra Zoom Digital Camera

Olympus introduce the CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom, a compact, easy-to-handle digital camera equipped with a bright, powerful, F2.8 - 3.5 10x optical zoom lens. The lens has a zoom range that is equivalent to 38 - 380mm on a conventional 35mm, and when used in tandem with the built-in digital zoom function, offers the equivalent of 1000mm telephoto power. The camera offers full-auto shooting convenience, and its compact size makes it extremely easy to handle. Olympus introduced its first 10x optical zoom digital camera, the CAMEDIA C-2100 Ultra Zoom, in August 2000. It was a camera that made the most of the inherent advantages of digital technology, and made the light-gathering power and versatility of a bright, F2.8 - 3.5 10x optical zoom lens accessible for the first time -- because on a conventional silver-halide film camera, such a lens would have to be extremely large and costly to produce. The new CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom makes this power even more accessible and affordable. Although it is even lighter and more compact than its predecessor, it offers the same high image quality because the lens is specifically designed to match the performance characteristics of the camera's 2.11-megapixel CCD. In addition, the 10x optical zoom can be used in tandem with the digital zoom function to achieve maximum telephoto power of 1000mm.
The CAMEDIA C-700 Ultra Zoom also features iESP* auto focus, iESP auto white balance, digital ESP light metering, as well as Portrait, Sport and other auto exposure modes. As a result, it makes high quality, 10x zoom photography extremely easy to enjoy. It also features manual exposure control, auto bracketing, multi-spot metering, one-touch white balance settings, and a range of other features for greater creative control. Ease of use is enhanced by a new settings menu that can be displayed on the camera's built-in color LCD monitor, and the AE lock button can customized by the user to provide instant access to frequently used settings. Other features include motion JPEG recording, sepia and monochrome shooting modes, and a White/Black board shooting mode.

Olympus D-400 Zoom Digital Camera

Olympus D-400 Zoom Digital Camera

Olympus Camedia D-400 Zoom Digital Camera
(c) Olympus America Inc.

Announced on November 2, 1998, the Olympus D-400 Zoom filmless digital camera continues the Olympus winning tradition, as it is two weeks old today yet has already received its first award. Designed as a camera first and foremost, the D-400 Zoom has an ergonomically designed point & shoot body and features popular in today’s film cameras. These include a 4 mode pop-up intelligent flash, through-the-lens auto focus and 3X optical zoom (35-105mm lens system), auto white balance with 5-step manual override, center weighted and spot metering systems for exposure metering with +/-2 step manual EV control in ½ step increments. This camera is also designed as a "digital" device with many high-tech features, including a 1.3 megapixel resolution (1280 x 960) CCD censor, 2X Digital Telephoto at any focal length, floppy disk compatibility to computer systems, and reusable SmartMedia cards. Finally, it is a consumer electronics device, with video connectivity to popular consumer products and direct printing to the Olympus Personal Photo Printer without the need of a computer.

Olympus America Inc., today unveiled the world’s largest 360° panorama photo created with a digital camera. Shot with the Olympus D-400 Zoom, the newly announced point & shoot digital camera, if placed on end, the photo would tower four stories high. It is 45 feet x 3 feet tall, but is mounted end to end so attendees can view it from within. The photo will be displayed during Comdex in Las Vegas at the Olympus Booth #1648 (LVCC).

The image was created on busy Fremont Street in Las Vegas. This street was chosen because it is an extremely challenging subject for any camera to handle (digital or film-based alike), with great variations in the type of lighting and thousands of bright incandescent and fluorescent lights. The photographer used the Olympus D-400 Zoom’s autofocus and adjusted the exposure, color temperature and white balance to create the perfect image. White balance and exposure are automatic, but may be overriden by the user.

18 photos were taken with a 30% overlap at 1280 x 960 resolution in uncompressed mode to allow for the greatest detail. The photos were then enlarged with raster image software from 3M and automatically stitched with professional panorama stitching technology from Enroute Imaging’s QuickStitch. The finished panorama photo was then printed on a large format HP3500 CP printer at 600 dpi on opaque vinyl media, again from 3M. The resulting image is both technically and artistically stunning.

"The results are spectacular!" said Walter Urie, Professional Photographer. "The Olympus D-400 Zoom performed unbelievably. I’ve used expensive and sophisticated cameras in my profession, but this filmless camera outperformed these cameras creating a breathtaking panorama."

"The Olympus camera is so powerful that it allowed us to stitch the world’s largest panorama with our QuickStitch software without retouching the images," said Paul Cha, Executive Vice President, Enroute Imaging. "This panorama photo surpasses any ever taken with a digital camera and is our most aggressive effort to date."

"The D-400 Zoom is the perfect camera for taking panorama photos since it has a special panorama mode built in," said Dave Veilleux, Director of Marketing Communications, Olympus America, Digital & Imaging Systems Group. "The exposure is automatically locked with the first image in a panoramic set so subsequent photos are consistently exposed – even in widely illuminated subjects. This results in a smooth, even panoramic photograph."
