Wilmington’s Cucalorus Film Festival releases early selections –

Celebrating provocative films on strangers, virgins, bird food, and air sex

Cucalorus Film Festival, presented by PNC, hosts its 19th annual cinematic celebration November 13-17, 2013 in historic downtown Wilmington, NC. Early selections have been posted on the festival website including Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake, a minimalist homoerotic drama that premiered at Cannes this year. Bobcat Goldthwait’s genre-defying found-footage horror film Willow Creek; Vincent Bal’s charming, fast-paced period drama The Zigzag Kid; Dan Krauss’ real-life horror story The Kill Team; and Ektoras Lygizos profoundly unsettling indie drama Boy Eating the Bird’s Food (recently announced as Greece’s official Oscar contender) join a total of 68 films on the early selections roster.

THE BOUNCEBACK, Directed by Bryan Poyser - SYNOPSIS

Breaking up is hard to do. Desperate and lonely, when Stan (Michael Stahl-David) learns that his ex, Cathy (Ashley Bell), will be in Austin for the weekend, he hops on the first flight to the Lone Star State in hopes of “accidentally” running into her there. Little does he know that another breakup crisis will greet him in Austin between his friends Jeff (Zach Cregger) and Kara (Sara Paxton). Cavorting through Austin’s honkytonks, nightclubs, and a cutthroat air-sex competition, the two former couples find bouncing back from heartache to be unexpectedly complicated. An outrageous but heartfelt comedy, THE BOUNCEBACK is Bryan Poyser's follow-up to the hit Sundance film, LOVERS OF HATE.

Showing big love for the Tar Heel state, the list includes 20 North Carolina films such as the intimate bio of writer, therapist and philanthropist Lucy Daniels (In So Many Words) and the engaging doc One Band Indivisible, an intimate portrait of the charismatic marching band at Hillside, a historically African-American high school in Durham.

Cucalorus embraces an eclectic collection of provocative artists - choreographers, poets, musicians, and performers through a series of unexpected programs like Dance-a-lorus, Visual/Sound/Walls, the Bus To Lumberton, and Jengo’s Cabaret. Dance-a-lorus, a boundary blending performance bringing film and dance together, will open the festival on Wednesday, November 13 on the main stage at Thalian Hall. Wilmington native Joel Fernando will curate the revamped Blue Velvet Tour (now called the “Bus to Lumberton”) as a multi-media experience spanning all five days of the festival. Additional screening venues will include Jengo’s Playhouse, City Stage Theater, TheatreNOW, and Ziggy’s.

More than 100 shorts hit Cucalorus screens each year, bringing emerging artists from all over the world to share short form films – animation, experimental, drama, and documentary. Scott Hardison’s America 6.1; Dear Valued Guests by Jarred Alterman and Paul Sturtz; Chapman University’s charming animation Blue, and Noah, a narrative that plays out entirely within the confines of a computer screen; join the list of shorts on the early selections list. The festival presents shorts in themed and creatively packaged blocks throughout the festival. The full festival schedule will be released in late September.

This week, Cucalorus will announce an expanded lineup of films as part of the Works-in-Progress program, funded this year with grants from Alternate ROOTS and the Fledgling Fund. The program connects projects in development with unexpected audiences for critical dialogue and community action. The Cucalorus Film Festival is presented by PNC and funded in part by the North Carolina Arts Council and the City of Wilmington.

Cucalorus brings people together to celebrate, discover and create independent films. The annual festival provides a non-competitive environment to honor and support filmmakers.

In conjunction with the Dubai International Film Festival 2013 (DIFF), Maraya Art Centre will host a screening night celebrating and supporting young Emirati filmmakers on Saturday, April 6th 2013.

Opening with an intimate reception at 7pm, the evening will feature screenings from some of the Emirate’s best up and coming filmmakers, all of whom have been previously featured at the Gulf Film Festival (GFF). The screening will consist of five short films which range in genre from fashion to politics.

“Through our thriving partnership with the Maraya Art Centre we are very pleased to once again have the opportunity to expose the community to these young and vibrant film makers,” said DIFF Artistic Director and GFF Festival Director Masoud Amralla Al Ali. “All films, which have previously been showcased at GFF, were fantastically received by the local audiences and this is an ideal opportunity to expose film lovers to these films which contain emotions and storylines that really resonate with the local audience. We are dedicated to nurturing young Emirati talent and providing them with opportunities to showcase their artistic work throughout the year; this relationship offers a unique platform to engage wider audiences to experience these films.”

Showcased at GFF 2012, The Gamboo3a Revolution by Abdulrahman Al Madani, revolves around recent fashion trends, namely the beehive hairdo and questions whether it misuses the UAE’s cultural dress. Also screened at GFF 2012 Ana Arabi (I am Arab) by Jumana Al Ghanem explores the loss of the Arabic language due to modernization and a need to conform to social standards while Cats by Dubai Men’s College student Marwan Alhammadi looks into the recent trend of owning exotic pets among some Emiratis.

Meanwhile Second Wife by Moza al Sharif, screened in GFF 2010, allows viewers to witness the importance of cars to Emirati men. Finally Al Kandorah, a documentary from directors Lamya Al Mualla and Maitha Al Haddad examines the shift in attitudes towards the Kandorah, the traditional attire favoured by the Gulf’s men.

This documentary directed by Lamya Al Mualla and Maitha Al Haddad looks at the kandorah, the traditional men’s attire of the UAE – from examining new styles and trends to contrasting the attitudes of different generations about this symbol of national identity and pride.

The 14-minute documentary directed by Moza al Sharif takes a look at Emirati men’s obsession with their cars. It is a series of comments from young Emirati men and women, where the humorous tone does not mask the seriousness of the message. Women claim men are willing to spend more money on their cars than getting married. “They’re willing to take out massive loans and spend up to Dh400,000 on a car but that leaves them penniless when they get married”.

ANA ARABI (I am Arab)

Ana Arabi is a 21-minute documentary lament against the dilution of the Arabic language and culture by foreign influences. It is co-directed by Ahlam Albannai and Jumana al Ghanem. The film explores the status of Arabic as a language among today’s Arab youth. It suggests innovative solutions towards preserving the language and its use.

CATS

Director: MARWAN ALHAMMADI 

A 15-minute short film directed by Marwan Alhammadi, titled Cats, goes into villas and farms across the UAE where proud owners talk about their prized possessions, as the majestic cats lounge around them. In the film, many of those interviewed own three or more of the exotic animals. In a revealing preface, the film claims that over 3,000 people in the UAE have wild animals as domestic pets. Of those, many own three or more.

THE GAMBOO3A REVOLUTION

When the traditional ‘sheila’ and ‘abaya’ were reinvented to launch the ‘gamboo3a’ trend (the bee-hive hair or ‘camel hump’), society was divided over it. The Gamboo3a Revolution directed by Abdulrahman Al Madani explores the debate of fashion vs. modesty.

Festival International du Film PanAfricain 2013, Cannes

Le prochain Festival International du Film PanAfricain à Cannes aura lieu du 17 au 21 avril 2013. Organisé par l'association Nord-Sud Développement, ce festival qui met le cinéma africain à l'honneur depuis 2004 en sera à sa 10e édition. Un appel à projet a été lancé pour cette édition 2013. La date de clôtures des inscriptions de films est fixée au 31 janvier 2013. Les genres de  films admis sont très larges : Fiction, animation, expérimental, documentaires... Catégorie : Long, moyen et court métrage. Une compétition est organisée pour le Dikalo Award (Prix) Long, moyen, court, prix du jury (documentaire, fiction, animation). 6ème édition de "Mon 1er Festival"

A destination des enfants à partir de 2 ans, Mon 1er Festival se déroule à Paris durant les vacances de la Toussaint et propose une approche du cinéma ludique et pédagogique au tarif unique de 4 euros la séance. Son but est d’éveiller le regard et la curiosité des plus petits pour le 7ème art.

Pour info : En 2009, le festival a accueilli 16 500 spectateurs (+35% par rapport à l’édition 2008), lors de 210 séances programmées dans dix salles Art et Essai partenaires.

Cette année, le Forum des images rejoint la manifestation avec trois séances spéciales (deux ciné-concerts et une avant-première).

La 6ème édition du festival propose de découvrir une programmation pleine d’humour et d’émotion autour du thème « Eclats de rire », avec :

•    une centaine de films,
•    des avant-premières et des films inédits,
•    une fenêtre sur le cinéma britannique,
•    un hommage à Louis de Funès,
•    les films coups de coeur de la marraine ou du parrain du festival,
•    des ciné-concerts,
•    et de nombreuses séances animées.

Deux prix récompenseront les films présentés en avant-première

•  Le Grand Prix du jury, décerné par un jury composé d’enfants des centres de loisirs de la Ville de Paris encadrés par la Cinémathèque municipale Robert Lynen (en partenariat avec la chaîne Cinécinéma)
•  Le Prix du Public pour lequel tous les jeunes spectateurs du festival seront invités à voter (en partenariat avec Paris Mômes).

Pour inviter encore plus d’enfants à participer à la manifestation, la Ville de Paris associe depuis la création de Mon 1er Festival les centres de loisirs et s’appuie depuis 2009 sur les relais associatifs des quartiers parisiens.

La Ville de Paris a confié l’organisation de cette sixième édition à Enfances au cinéma, association spécialisée dans l’éducation au cinéma.

Reeling 2010 Chicago LGBT film festival

Reeling 2010: The 29th Chicago Lesbian & Gay International Film Festival, the second-oldest LGBT film festival in the world, opens on November 4th and runs through the 13th.

54th BFI London Film Festival Programme

The programme for the 54th BFI London Film Festival, launched today by Artistic Director Sandra Hebron, showcases an array of highly anticipated films by both established and emerging talent from around the world. A particularly strong feature this year is the selection of British films including Opening and Closing Night Galas. Over 16 days the festival will screen a total of 197 features and 112 shorts, including 11 World, 23 International and 33 European premieres, many presented by cast members and filmmakers, alongside a stellar line-up of special events. 

GALAS & SPECIAL SCREENINGS

Opening the festival is Mark Romanek’s NEVER LET ME GO, starring Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield, whilst Danny Boyle's 127 HOURS, starring James Franco will close the festival, with key talent in attendance for both. In between are THE KING'S SPEECH, with Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter; Darren Aronofsky's BLACK SWAN, with Natalie Portman; Mike Leigh's ANOTHER YEAR; NEDS, directed by Peter Mullan; THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT starring Julianne Moore and Annette Bening; and Cannes Palme D'Or winner, UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES. Other highlights include CONVICTION, starring Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell; Alejandro González Iñárritu's BIUTIFUL starring Javier Bardem; WEST IS WEST, the follow up to East is East; Xavier Beauvois’ OF GODS AND MEN; and Julian Schnabel's MIRAL with Freida Pinto. In THE FIRST GRADER an 84 year old Kenyan finally starts school, and AFRICA UNITED features a group of youngsters who trek across Africa to reach the World Cup. THE GREAT WHITE SILENCE, a BFI Archive restoration, is this year's Archive Gala, featuring a live performance of a new score by Simon Fisher Turner. 

FILM ON THE SQUARE

London’s West End will see a selection of some of the strongest films of the year. Anton Corbijn (Control) presents THE AMERICAN, starring George Clooney; CARLOS is Olivier Assayas's epic biopic of the infamous Venezuelan terrorist; Jean-Luc Godard continues to challenge cinemagoers with FILM SOCIALISME; ROBINSON IN RUINS marks Patrick Keiller's long awaited return, and is narrated by Vanessa Redgrave. Other highlights include Diego Luna's directorial debut ABEL; Kelly Reichardt's MEEK'S CUTOFF with Michelle Williams and Paul Dano; LE QUATTRO VOLTE, an intriguing quasi-documentary set in an Italian village; LOOSE CANNONS, an Italian coming-out comedy; and RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE a Finnish fantasy thriller... about Father Christmas. Two of the festival's features set in Africa are A SCREAMING MAN from Chad and BENDA BILILI, a documentary about the meteoric rise of a band of street musicians from Congo. The UK is represented by Ken Loach (ROUTE IRISH), Joanna Hogg (ARCHIPELAGO), Richard Ayoade (SUBMARINE) and Lucy Walker (WASTE LAND). Amongst the many internationally renowned filmmakers included are Jan Švankmajer (SURVIVING LIFE), Takashi Miike (13 ASSASSINS) and John Sayles (AMIGO).  

NEW BRITISH CINEMA

Amongst the finest new films from the UK are several which deal with real life subjects. In THE ARBOR, Clio Barnard explores the legacy of writer Andrea Dunbar (whose works include Rita, Sue and Bob Too); Hannah Rothschild shadowed her subject for a crucial year in MANDELSON: THE REAL PM?; and FIRE IN BABYLON celebrates the golden age of West Indian cricket. Festival alumni Kim Longinotto focuses on India in PINK SARIS, whilst Turner Prize winner Gillian Wearing makes her feature debut with SELF MADE. Both add to the strong representation of women filmmakers this year. Carol Morley offers a resonant and involving character study with EDGE; IN OUR NAME is an urgent and provocative feature depicting the issues one soldier faces when she returns from war in Iraq; and Marc Evans' striking PATAGONIA features Duffy in her first acting role. 

  

FRENCH REVOLUTIONS

The French cinema scene is represented by a range of filmmakers, new and established. Amongst those whose films are screening are new discoveries such as Katell Quillévéré (LOVE LIKE POISON), up and coming talents including award winning director Antony Cordier (HAPPY FEW), Guillaume Canet, who brings his second feature after Tell No One, LITTLE WHITE LIES (featuring Marion Cotillard) and the established force that is Catherine Breillat (THE SLEEPING BEAUTY). Screen icons featured in this year’s line-up include Isabelle Huppert (SPECIAL TREATMENT and COPACABANA), Gerard Depardieu and Isabelle Adjani (MAMMUTH) and Kristin Scott Thomas in Lola Doillon's IN YOUR HANDS. Isabelle Czajka returns to the festival with LIVING ON LOVE ALONE, the follow up to her debut The Year After.  

CINEMA EUROPA

Celebrating the best in new cinema from mainland Europe, highlights include MYSTERIES OF LISBON, a four and a half hour epic from Raúl Ruiz; WOMB, an unusual love story starring Eva Green and Matt Smith; MY JOY, a beautifully shot, dark parable; the surreal and hypnotic THE TEMPTATION OF ST TONY; and SILENT SOULS, an almost mystical road movie. Here, the spotlight also falls on women directors including Pernille Fischer Christensen, whose film A FAMILY picks up on a recurrent theme of families; EVEN THE RAIN, directed by Icíar Bollaín, written by long term Ken Loach collaborator Paul Laverty, and starring Gael Garcia Bernal; DRAQUILA - ITALY TREMBLES by Sabina Guzzanti, a provocative exposé of Silvio Berlusconi; and returning filmmaker Isabelle Stever (BLESSED EVENTS). More debate is provoked in PICCO, the German film exploring the extreme violence experienced in a youth prison.  

WORLD CINEMA

From around the globe, a diverse selection of fiction features and documentaries are presented. Amongst a host of US indies are SPORK, a wonderfully unexpected take on the high school movie; Geoff Marslett's unique animated film, MARS, an inventive slice of slacker sci-fi; COLD WEATHER, a new spin on the crime genre; and THE TAQWACORES, about Muslim punks in Upstate New York. SMASH HIS CAMERA turns the camera on one of the original paparazzi, Ron Galella. CATFISH raises unsettling issues around social media, whilst LEMMY is the definitive portrait of the legendary Motorhead singer and ultimate rock god. Another revered musical subject features in STRANGE POWERS: STEPHIN MERRITT AND THE MAGNETIC FIELDS. THE TILLMAN STORY examines the controversy surrounding the death of the NFL player turned US soldier in Afghanistan. Other highlights from the rest of the world include MICROPHONE, set in the exuberant underground music scene of the Egyptian capital; AUTUMN, about the conflict in Indian Kashmir; and LEAP YEAR, the Mexico City set feature which won director Michael Rowe the Camera D'Or at Cannes. Amongst the many strong East Asian titles are DEAR DOCTOR, the third feature from Japan's Miwa Nishikawa and Chang Tso-Chi's beautifully observed family piece, WHEN LOVE COMES.  

TREASURES FROM THE ARCHIVE 

Showcasing the best recent examples of conservation work, and provoking debate in equal measure, titles include digital restorations of Renoir’s BOUDU SAVED FROM DROWNING and David Lean’s epic THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI and the latest project from Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation, Edward Yang’s A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY. Missing scenes, incorrect focus problems and technical difficulties have been overcome to bring back to the screen PANDORA’S BOX, starring the iconic Louise Brooks and Mauritz Stiller’s GUNNAR HEDES SAGA. Gritty pre-code films THE MATCH KING and THE MAYOR OF HELL with James Cagney are rediscovered, with light relief provided by screwball comedy TURNABOUT and endearing musical SUNNY SIDE UP. Life in post-war London is captured in three short films restored by the BFI in BOW BELLS AND WATERLOO SUNSETS. Other welcome new restorations include the seminal MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA and Manoel de Oliveira’s RITE OF SPRING, as well as the first feature-length gay documentary WORD IS OUT. 

EXPERIMENTA 

Highlights include feature length works by Sharon Lockhart (DOUBLE TIDE), John Akomfrah (THE NINE MUSES) and Li Hongqi, whose film WINTER VACATION won the Golden Leopard in Locarno. An important aspect of Experimenta is the weekend of artists' film and video on 23-24 October. Eight curated programmes offer the opportunity to experience a range of international work by prominent and emerging moving image artists. This year's survey includes Prolix Satori, a new series of collage animations by Lewis Klahr, making his first UK appearance, and three films by Festival regular Nathaniel Dorsky. Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry is a unique live performance piece by Daniel Barrow. There will be installations by Emily Richardson and Martin Arnold, and David Gatten will present a film shot in the Galapagos Islands at the Natural History Museum.  

SHORT CUTS AND ANIMATION 

This year, ten programmes celebrate the short film and animation formats, appealing to a wide ranging audience. New filmmakers from London are represented in London Calling whilst animation from all corners of the globe are featured, including those in a delightful programme aimed at children. This section doesn't shy away from controversy with hard-edged stories including THE GOOD NORTH and BURN MY BODY. The spotlight once again focuses on women in the Pretty Girls Make Graves selection. As well as being a place for talent spotting, the section features established names including actors-turned-directors, Sir David Jason and Rupert Friend.  

BFI LFF 2010 EVENTS

To complement the film screenings as ever there will be a full programme of inspiring and thought provoking events. This year's Screen Talks feature directors Darren Aronofsky and Mark Romanek. Peter Mullan and Olivier Assayas will lead Masterclasses. Other highlights include music supervisor Randall Poster’s Film School of Rock; a forum about adapting books for the screen; and a special screening of Christy Turlington Burns' directorial debut about maternal health, NO WOMAN, NO CRY presented in association with Brightwide.com.The Festival has once again partnered with Time Out to bring a series of free events based around panel discussions with filmmakers. In a year noted for the wealth of films from the UK, filmmakers come together to discuss their work in British Cinema: Breaking with Convention.  

2010 BFI LFF AWARDS 

Following last year's inaugural ceremony, the BFI London Film Festival Awards return for a second year to celebrate the finest films within the Festival and to recognise the achievements of filmmakers, both new and established. This year's Awards will take place on 27 October at Jerwood Hall, LSO St Luke's, before a panel of judges composed of figures from across the international film community. The full Awards shortlists will be announced on 28 September 2010.

As well as many of the names already highlighted, the Festival expect to welcome guests including Julianne Moore, Colin Firth, Hilary Swank, Natalie Portman, Helena Bonham Carter, Naomie Harris, Julian Schnabel, Lisa Cholodenko, Pablo Trapero, Gillian Wearing, Kim Longinotto, Joanna Hogg, Ferzan Ozpetek, Richard Ayoade, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Christy Turlington Burns.

Festival International du Film de Rotterdam 2010

 

 

15 films ont été sélectionnés pour concourir aux VPRO Tiger awards du Festival international du film de Rotterdam 2010. La liste est reproduite ci-dessous. Le festival prime, dans cette catégorie, des cinéastes pour leur premier ou second long métrage. Il s’agit donc d’encourager de “jeunes” réalisateurs. Trois films remporteront chacun un prix doté de 15.000 euros. Le jury est composé de l’actrice et chanteuse française Jeanne Balibar, du réalisateur polonais et hollandais Urszula Antoniak, de l’ancien directeur du Festival du film de Singapour Philip Cheah, du réalisateur mexicain Amat Escan et de l’acteur et militant ougandais Okello Kelo Sam. Les gagnants seront connus le 5 février prochain.

Thirty-one titles have been selected for the Tiger Awards Competition for Short Films. The lineup includes films by Greg Smith (South Africa), Mark Lewis (UK), Rosa Barba (Italy), Anna Abrahams (Netherlands), Mihai Grecu (France), Phil Collins (UK), Mati Diop (Senegal), Ying Liang (China), Cameron Jamie (USA) and Merve Kayan (Turkey).

The ‘Spectrum: Shorts’-section of nearly 200 short films runs within the festival from January 28 till February 1. See full Competition line up below.

 

Competition and Jury

To raise the profile of short films as a highly influential form of art but also a the realm in which cinema has been both democratized and popularized by the online and digital developments, the International Film Festival Rotterdam founded its Competition for short films in 2005. This edition, thirty-one films of up to sixty minutes in length will be presented to the international jury consisting of Jeremy Rigsby (programmer of Media City Festival in Ottawa, Canada), Shai Heredia (director of Filter India Festival, Mumbai, India) and Albert Wulffers (filmmaker, writer, visual artist and teacher, The Netherlands). The winners of the three equal Tiger Awards for Short Films, with prize money of 3.000 euro each, will be announced on Monday February 1.

 

Spectrum: Shorts

From the overwhelming worldwide production, the IFFR has selected 210 short films, including thirteen ‘short features’ with durations between forty and sixty minutes, for its dedicated section ‘Spectrum: Shorts’. All films are screened during a five-day event in festival location Lantaren/Venster. Here festival audiences, filmmakers and industry professionals gather to watch the films, introduce their works and meet for getting the lowdown on the latest developments. The films are grouped by four or five titles in screening slots of 80 minutes that allow introductions and Q&A sessions. The Shorts Marathon, a usually sold out program of repeat screenings, takes place on Saturday February 6.

Spectrum: Shorts 2010 presents six programs of narrative works including premieres of medium lengths films by Geetu Mohan Das (India), José Luis Torres Leiva (Chili), Terril Calder (Canada) and Julia Kozyreva (Russia/Estonia).

Furthermore, Spectrum: Shorts comprises a wide range of essayistic, abstract and experimental short filmmaking by, among many others, Jem Cohen (USA), John Price (Canada), Liu Wei (China), Kleber Mendonca Filho (Brazil) and prolific US filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson who presents four films in IFFR 2010: his short films Company Line and The Citizens as well as his feature film Erie in Spectrum and the commissioned short film BZV in the Africa focus program.

The program committee that selects films for Spectrum: Shorts consists of IFFR programmers Peter van Hoof, Juliette Jansen, Erwin van 't Hart, Sacha Bronwasser, Peter Taylor and Theus Zwakhals.

 

Focus on Jim Jennings, homage to Frank Cole

As part of Spectrum: Shorts, NYC-based filmmaker Jim Jennings will present eight of his recent 16 mm works, all filmed on location in his home town. Mostly edited in the camera Jennings' films are tributes to the NYC landscape and urban architecture. Jim Jennings will attend the festival to introduce his films.

Within its Regained section, the festival presents a tribute to Canadian filmmaker Frank Cole (1954-2000), who entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the first man to cross the Sahara on foot. His murder in Mali left us with a legacy of two features, a pair of award-winning short films and a mystery that may never be solved. IFFR 2010 presents his short documentaries A Documentary (1979), The Mountenays (1981) and A Life (1986) as well as The Man Who Crossed the Sahara, Korbett Matthews recent documentary about Frank Cole. The program was curated and will be introduced by Canadian filmmaker Mike Hoolboom. In the Spectrum section, Hoolboom presents his documentary Mark, an elegiac portrait of his friend and long time editor Mark Karbusicky.

Rotterdam Lab welcomes 67 producers for tenth anniversary edition

The International Film Festival Rotterdam welcomes sixty-seven young producers taking part in the tenth anniversary edition of Rotterdam Lab. CineMart’s highly successful event for emerging producers has expanded steadily over the past decade. The participants have been nominated by the twenty-one Rotterdam Lab partner organizations. Rotterdam Lab, part of CineMart, takes place January 30 – February 3. (See full list of participants and partner organizations below)

Rotterdam Lab Coordinator Jacobine van der Vloed: “Finding your way in a large international festival and market can be daunting for an emerging producer. Buyers, sellers and funders are not easy to track down. The Rotterdam Lab creates a somewhat safer and easier environment for these producers to present their companies and projects, test the grounds, receive feedback on how to proceed and expand their network in an effective way. The Rotterdam Lab fits very well in Rotterdam’s spirit of nurturing emerging talent. Moreover, the Rotterdam Lab has developed into a valuable tool to strengthen CineMart's international network of independent producers.”

Over the past years, the Rotterdam Lab has expanded steadily, with more producers from more regions participating every year. The Lab has already resulted in many producers returning to CineMart, and films by producers who have attended the Lab have been screened in the official Festival Programme. By bringing together a mix of producers from around Europe and the rest of the world, the Rotterdam Lab has also generated many alluring international co-productions.

The participants of the Rotterdam Lab are starting producers, who are ‘nominated’ by the international training bodies and funding agencies with which the CineMart has partnerships. Traditionally, panel discussions are organized on different topics such as production, sales, financing, distribution, press & promotion and television. These panels take place in an informal setting and are organized to illustrate the process by which a project in need of financing is completed and brought to its audience. In these panels, experts from the industry give the producers tools on how to present their project and how to build up an international network.

Complimentary to the panels, participants take part in “speed-dating” sessions, during which they have time to meet personally with industry delegates and receive advice on their own projects.

CineMart has always had a focus on producers who are in the beginning of their careers. Several years ago, the CineMart staff realized that many new producers lack the knowledge on how to operate in an international film festival or market setting. Therefore, in 2001, based on the belief that these skills are vital for any producer, and to provide young professionals the means to develop an international network, CineMart organized the first CineMart International Trainee Project, later renamed the Rotterdam Lab.

In addition to the organized Rotterdam Lab programme, it is important that the producers take the chance to participate in all other CineMart events, such as networking lunches, cocktails and other panels. They are encouraged to take advantage of their time in Rotterdam as much as possible by strengthening their network.

Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival

Fifth-annual festival, featuring live-action and animation films

 

Experience Music Project|Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (EMP|SFM), in partnership with Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF), presents the fifth-annual Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival (SFFSFF) at the renowned Cinerama Theatre in Seattle on Saturday, January 30, 2010. SFFSFF brings together industry professionals from both the filmmaking and science fiction and fantasy genres to encourage and support new, creative additions to science fiction and fantasy cinema arts.

From a field of almost 100 films from all over the world, 20 entries were selected for inclusion in the festival. To meet requirements for entry, all films were produced after January 2005 and were no longer than 15 minutes in length. Entries included animated or live-action films in science fiction (examples: futuristic stories, space adventure, technological speculation, social experiments, utopia and dystopia) and fantasy (examples: sword and sorcery, folklore, urban fantasy, magic, mythic adventure).

This year’s judges consisted of science fiction notables and award-winning film professionals, including filmmakers A.J. Bond, Howard McCain, Daniel Myrick and Vincent Taylor, as well as writer and producer Marc Scott Zicree, director Jesse Harris and producer Susan LaSalle. The judges will award Grand Prize, Second Place, Third Place and the Douglas Trumbull Award for Best Special Effects. The audience will determine the Audience Favorite Award during the festival.

During the festival ten short films will be screened in the first session from 4-6 p.m. and ten more short films will be screened in the second session from 7-9 p.m. An awards ceremony follows the second session.

The mission and objective of the Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival is to promote and encourage an awareness, appreciation and understanding of the art of science fiction and fantasy cinema. Its mandate is to create a forum for creative artistry in science fiction and fantasy film and recognize the most outstanding short films produced. Among notable submissions this year are the locally-made Third Days Child and CC 2010, which feature actors, directors, and even in-film references to the Seattle area.
