Like hardly any other camera, the Leica M has stood for vivid and authentic images taken at the center of action since its launch in 1954. The intuitive, unique, and unobtrusive style of M photography is especially appreciated by photojournalists working in conflict areas. Since then, countless iconic pictures have been taken that reliably document the history of the world.

In today’s digital era, however, content can be easily manipulated. Forged and artificially created images deprive consumers of their trust in the accuracy of digital content and make it difficult to prove the authenticity of one’s own pictures. A fatal problem, which threatens the basis of photographic reporting.

Leica Camera AG once again shows a pioneering spirit and creates another milestone in the history of photography by introducing the Leica M11-P. It is the world’s first camera to store metadata by attaching Content Credentials at the point of capture to protect the authenticity of digital images. Content Credentials are the digital nutrition label and most widely adopted industry standard for content of all kinds, and the foundation for increased trust and transparency online. With the M11-P, Leica acknowledges the invaluable work of all photographers and preserves the trust and transparency in digital content and its sources.

The M11-P pioneers the use of secure metadata in compliance with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) open-source standard. This feature provides an additional layer of transparency when designing and modifying an image. It allows information such as names, dates, changes made and tools used to be securely attached, creating awareness of the file's origin. With Content Credentials, each Leica M11-P image captured receives a digital signature backed by a CAI-compliant certificate. The authenticity of images can be easily verified at any time using a freely available, open-source CAI tool or by visiting https://contentcredentials.org/verify .

Leica´s Content Credentials technology ensures the picture’s authenticity by means of special hardware in the camera. It includes a special chipset for storing digital certificates of the German Federal Printing Office. The state-of-the-art integration guarantees complete verifiability of a picture’s origin. Thus, Leica is setting a new standard for the protection of digital content in cooperation with Adobe and the global community of nearly 2,000 members, including media and tech companies, NGOs, academics, and more to promote adoption and implementation of Content Credentials.
Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Leica Camera AG: “Leica cameras have always stood witness to iconic moments in world history. However, determining the authenticity of visual content has become increasingly difficult and important in the age of digital photography. Now with the ability to provide this proof, we are once again strengthening trust in digital content and re-establishing Leica cameras as authoritative tools in the documentation of world events.”
Santiago Lyon, Head of Advocacy & Education, Content Authenticity Initiative, Adobe:
“We're thrilled to see Leica pioneering the integration of Content Credentials into their flagship M11-P cameras. This is a significant milestone for the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) and the future of photojournalism: It will usher in a powerful new way for photojournalists and creatives to assert their digital rights, combat misinformation and bring authenticity to their work and consumers, while promoting widespread adoption of Content Credentials."
When the "Leica Content Credentials" function is activated in the camera menu, the Content Credential logo is visible in the display and every image taken by the Leica M11-P is reliably signed using a special algorithm. The image thus receives an unalterable and verifiable proof of camera model, manufacturer, and image attributes. The authenticity of these certificates can be verified and examined by means of free CAI open-source tools at any time. They prove whether an image is available in the original or in an edited version and in the latter case, they provide insight into the history of the content changes. So photographers can demonstrate the authenticity of their pictures from the moment they are taken to the time they are published.

Further distinguishing features of the Leica M11 perfect the traditional M understatement and expand the range of applications of the Leica M11-P even further. The deliberate omission of the red Leica dot on the camera front, for example, allows for even more discreet photographing. Instead, a subtle Leica lettering is engraved on the top plate. This plate and the bottom cover are milled from aluminum in the matte black Leica M11-P and from brass blocks in the silver chrome camera version. Merged with the all-metal body made of a highly solid magnesium alloy, the interior of the camera is carefully protected. The LCD monitor made of sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflection protective coating enables an optimal evaluation of the pictures in all lighting conditions. The Leica M11-P, with its 60 MP BSI CMOS sensor and Triple Resolution Technology as well as the high-performance Maestro-III processor, combines state-of-the-art camera technology with a maximum of flexibility. Finally, the large internal memory with 256 GB makes the camera a reliable and functional precision tool “Made in Germany” that is always ready for use.

There are also two new black leather accessories for the M-System: The M-System case as well as the carrying strap once again emphasize the clean lines in the design of the new Leica M11-P.

A black and a silver version of the Leica M11-P will be available globally at all Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store and authorized dealers starting now. The retail price will be €8,950.00 including VAT.

About Content Credentials & Content Authenticity Initiative

Adobe co-founded the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) in 2019 to help combat the threat of misinformation and ensure proper attribution for creators. Today the CAI is a coalition of nearly 2,000 members, including AFP, the Associated Press, the BBC, Getty Images, Leica Camera, Microsoft, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and more, all working together to add a verifiable layer of transparency and trust to content online – via secure metadata called Content Credentials. Between the tremendous momentum in attracting new members and the growing adoption of Content Credentials by leaders spanning multiple industries, the CAI is ensuring that technological innovations are built on ethical foundations.

VU MAG Numero 1

Sakar Acquires Vivitar Brand

Consumer electronics manufacturer Sakar International today announced the acquisition of the Vivitar worldwide brand name and associated intellectual property from Syntax-Brillian Corporation, the parent company of 70-year-old photographic equipment maker Vivitar Corporation. The acquisition equips Sakar with a well-known camera brand that the company will use to expand its own mass-market camera line, add higher-price camera SKUs, introduce other Vivitar-branded consumer products, and gain overall market visibility. Sakar is a market leader in digital cameras and related accessories to the mass retail channel and a producer of various other technology, toy and consumer electronic products. The company’s current camera products retail from $20 to $100. The Vivitar-branded cameras that Sakar plans to introduce will sell for $70 to $300, enabling the company to reach a new market segment that will significantly broaden its customer base and market penetration. The new products will leverage Vivitar’s existing SKUs, patents and engineering expertise. In addition, Sakar plans to add other Vivitar-branded products, including camera accessories and digital photo frames, as well as explore licensing opportunities in various categories. Sakar currently holds licenses for major brand franchises including Crayola, Hello Kitty, Star Wars, Leap Frog, Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Jeep, Made for iPod and For Dummies. “This acquisition positions our company to substantially increase market share in the camera space as well as leverage the Vivitar brand name in numerous other ways,” said Sakar CEO and founder Charles Saka. “It is a core building block for our next phase of growth.” “Linking ourselves to Vivitar will strengthen our presence on the retail shelf while also enabling retailers to buy more product from a single source,” added Sakar COO Ralph Sasson. “We will now have an even more extensive product line at multiple price points.” Vivitar was founded in 1938 and grew to become a leading manufacturer of both digital and film cameras, including one of the broadest product lines of digital cameras spanning entry-level VGA cameras to twelve-megapixel digital cameras with zoom optics for the amateur and serious digital photographer. The company was acquired by Syntax-Brillian in 2006. Sakar’s acquisition of Vivitar was completed on August 21, 2008. Sakar did not purchase Vivitar’s equipment, facilities or receivables. Terms were not disclosed.

Olympus OM-2000 35mm SLR camera - Features & Specifications

Olympus OM-2000 35mm SLR camera

The convenience of an automated camera does not always leave room for individual expression. Those who look for creative freedom will find the new OM2000 a perfect companion to discover the joys of artistry and personal satisfaction full manual photography can bring. The OM2000 brings the quality and flexibility of SLR performance within affordable reach.

Full Manual Control SLR
Elegant, affordable, simple, yet uncompromising in quality, the OM2000 is a rugged, mechanical-shutter, 35mm SLR that continues the Olympus OM-system series tradition of putting the photographer's judgment first. The OM2000 provides total manual control over all the variables: aperture, shutter speed and focus. In the hands of a creative student or serious photographer the OM2000's mechanical excellence, aided by a precision Olympus Zuiko lens, can faithfully capture images on film just as the photographer conceived them.

Professional Look and Feel
The sturdy qualities of this camera start with the professional feel of its robust, die-cast aluminum body, with the top and bottom finished in a very durable ternary-compound alloy made of nickel, copper and zinc. Its inner beauty resides in the all-metal, precision focal plane shutter assembly. Covering the range from 1 second to 1/2000 second, the OM2000's mechanical shutter is always ready since it does not require battery power.

There is also a bulb setting and cable release for extended exposures in low light and even capturing the night sky.

Precise Exposure Control
Light is one of the most critical factors in photography, and accurate measurement of light is critical in determining exposure values. The manual OM2000 SLR features both spot metering and center-weighted average metering. With two systems available, a photographer can pick the appropriate one for a wide range of lighting conditions, including difficult backlit scenes. The choice also offers the freedom of creating striking effects with any combination of lens aperture and shutter speed. Switching between the two exposure systems is a simple matter of moving a lever.

Red and green LED indicators in the viewfinder verify battery condition and make it easy to set exposure value correctly. Pressing the spot metering selector on the OM2000 causes an orange LED to show in the viewfinder and makes a precise reading of light in the spot circle—the central 2% of the frame.

The viewfinder of the OM2000 uses a microprism split-image matter focusing screen. In addition to making it easier to see subjects and frame shots, the screen offers exceptional clarity and contrast. An optional dioptric lens offers -3 to +1 diopters of correction, to assure all photographers of optimum viewfinder image sharpness.

Compatible with OM System Lenses
Central to all creative decisions is the choice of which lens to use. The OM2000 uses interchangeable Zuiko lenses. These fit securely to the sturdy, metal OM mount and can be changed quickly. The compact, lightweight S Zuiko 35-70mm f3.5-4.8 lens comes with the OM2000 kit. A compact alternative is one Zuiko 70-210mm f4.5-5.6 one-touch zoom lens that makes telephoto shooting easy.

Olympus Zuiko lenses are equipped with a preview button. Accurate results are simplified by the preview function. When the preview button, which is located on the side of the lens, is pressed the current aperture is set so the depth of field can be checked in the viewfinder.

An OM2000 body is a welcome addition for owners of other OM camera models since the OM2000 accepts most OM system lenses.

Flash Photography Options
For flash photography, the OM2000 offers X-synchronization at any shutter speed up to 1/125 of a second. An optional Olympus S20 slim-line electronic flash unit boasts a guide number of 66 (ISO 100/ft), 20 (IS) 100/m), and offers auto flash performance at f2.8 and F5.6. It also comes with a wide adapter that provides flash coverage up to 24mm wide-angle shots.

Other Features
The OM2000 accommodates a wide variety of film types and speeds from ISO 25 to ISO 3200, with film speeds manually selected in 1/3 step increments. Film advance is by a convenient lever that also locks the shutter button between film-frame advances.

Interesting and unusual multiple exposures of two or more images on a single frame can also be made, if desired. Simply set the multi-exposure lever to the ON position, and you can cock the shutter without advancing the film. A self-timer is also included, providing up to about 10 seconds of shutter-trip delay.

Suggested list price of the OM2000 is $418.00
