Mariam Suhail: Breakdown of Shorter Concerns
GALLERYSKE, Bangalore
12 May - 22 June 2011

Mariam Suhail

In her solo, Breakdown of Shorter Concerns, Mariam Suhail puts forward her current preoccupation with drawing and the repercussions of this preoccupation in other media.

Within the medium of drawing she explores a stream of nonlinear concerns employing the interplay of text and image. The result, a series of situations that invite the viewer to step into different frames of reference from one work to the other or in some cases even within a work.

Another result of this process has been a direct engagement with a few selected objects that have been subjected to certain actions and processes. While these actions postulate a particular logic within the language of drawing, once brought into a three-dimensional physical reality, this logic undergoes a transformation along with the object and strange yet remotely familiar forms appear. The show comprises drawings and prints on paper and three-dimensional objects.

The artist has previously worked with a variety of media from sculpture and drawing to video and photography. Her previous solo at GALLERYSKE, fig. 1. (2009) was a suite of drawings on paper. Mariam Suhail’s work has been exhibited in Her Work is Never Done at Gallery BMB, Mumbai (2010), Some Blind Alleys at Anant Art Gallery, Delhi (2007) and Sites of Substance at the National Art Gallery, Islamabad (2007). She has participated in the Tanera Mor 3-island International artist residency in Scotland (2007) and was part of the Khoj International Artists’ workshop in Mumbai (2005). In 2002 she was part of Aar Paar, an artist-initiated public art project between artists from India and Pakistan, facilitated by Shilpa Gupta and Huma Mulji. She taught at the School of Visual Art, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore and the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi. The Artist completed her BFA from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi (2001). Mariam Suhail lives and works in Bangalore.
