"Innovation is not just a high-end game. The Nokia X3 is a great example of bringing new consumer value to lower price points," said Mary McDowell, Executive Vice President of Mobile Phones at Nokia. "With the Nokia X3 we are giving consumers the best of both worlds by combining a touch screen and a keypad in an affordable device. We have given people a larger screen with clear icons and menus plus kept critical keys such as the send and end keys. We've also added dedicated function keys for important links like music and text messaging," she said.

"We have designed the Nokia X3 to be a touch and type device because typing is ideal for SMS and social networking where fast and frequent input is needed, while touch is ideal for functions such as setting alarms, smooth browsing and controlling applications like music and games.” "Our research tells us consumers who have invested years in becoming fast one-handed, one-thumb texters want to maintain their speedy edge for SMS, chat and instant messaging - yet enjoy the benefits of touch as well," continued McDowell.

Optical Image Stabilization Mobile Phones

varioptic

Varioptic, the liquid lens company, has announced that it has developed its first liquid lens, A316S, offering Optical Image Stabilization functionality to mobile phones.

Varioptic’s Autofocus (AF) liquid lenses are used in consumer, medical and industrial devices ranging from full HD DV camcorders, bar code readers, security cameras, dental cameras to machine vision cameras. Liquid lenses have been in production since January 2007 and more recently, ramping mass production, with Japanese partner Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII).

Varioptic has now finalized the next generation of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) liquid lenses, correcting handshake. Today’s camera phones deliver relatively poor image capture indoor with a frustrating handshake blur. The new Varioptic liquid lens OIS functionality, A316S, compensates this defect, restoring an image quality comparable to a compact digital still camera (DSC).

With no moving parts, the new liquid lens, A316S, is very robust and uses very limited power (less than 50mW during a shot). The A316S liquid lens actuator, featuring both OIS and silent/smooth AF, is able to fit in typical AF camera module size.

Christian Dupont, Varioptic CEOThis unique OIS technology, developed by Varioptic, will enable our customers to integrate liquid lenses in camera phones in early 2011, accelerating Varioptic’s growth” stated Christian Dupont, Varioptic CEO. “Liquid lenses with Optical Image Stabilization will enable mobile users to take good pictures even in low light conditions as well as capturing stable and focused videos with their mobile phone. The next generations of camera phones will become comparable to digital still cameras and camcorders, while remaining compact and robust", added Christian Dupont.

Low light indoor photography and stabilized video capture has been demonstrated during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (15th to 18th February 2010).

SanDisk iNAND EFD in LG Arena handset

LG Electronics’ latest fully loaded LG Arena (LG-KM900) multimedia handset will include SanDisk’s iNAND 8 gigabyte (GB) Embedded Flash Drive (EFD). The iNAND storage device will be utilized by the handset as both a boot and data storage device, eliminating the need for a separate boot device.
Announced at the 2009 Mobile World Congress exhibition in Barcelona, the LG Arena multimedia handset is the company’s flagship model for the first half of 2009, featuring greatly enhanced audio and video technologies as well as LG’s new 3D S-Class user interface. SanDisk’s iNAND EFDs are designed specifically for advanced multimedia handsets such as the LG Arena, providing a fast and reliable storage solution in a small and power efficient package.
In addition to high capacity MLC NAND flash based storage, iNAND is fully capable of storing system boot code. Using iNAND as a system boot device means there is no need for the additional boot code storage device used in traditional designs. This conserves precious board space, reduces handset design complexity, lowers handset power consumption and saves the cost of an otherwise needed separate boot device. SanDisk’s flash based EFDs have been catering to personal storage and boot needs based on NAND MLC flash since 2003.
SanDisk iNAND EFDs come in a wide range of storage capacities, utilizing eSD and eMMC standard interfaces and packages for quick integration into handset designs. With managed physical partitions, customizable attributes and power failure immunity, SanDisk iNAND features a highly reliable code storage and boot device in addition to being a mass storage solution. iNAND offers design flexibility to OEMs through its ability to scale up from 1GB to 32GB and more, in both discrete and multi chip package configurations.

The future of Camera phones

Camera phones to represent 90% of total Western European mobile phone shipments by 2009, says IDC.

According to a recent forecast published by IDC, camera phone shipments in Western Europe are set to reach 179 million units in 2009, to constitute just over 90% of total mobile phone shipments. IDC predicts a compound annual growth rate of 8%, slightly higher than the growth forecast for the total mobile phone market, with converged devices positioned as multimedia and imaging solutions expected to demonstrate the largest growth during the forecast period.

"The integrated digital camera has become the most visible illustration to date of the progress of convergence in the mobile market," said Andrew Brown, program manager of IDC's European Mobile Devices service. "2004 witnessed the proportion of handsets with integrated cameras grow to 70% of total Western European mobile phone shipments from just 15% in 2003, illustrating the growing importance of imaging from high-end smart phones down to basic midrange and increasingly low-end mobile phones."

The declining costs of components and manufacturing/production efficiencies will be a key driver of the integrated digital camera into low-end handsets market, according to IDC, while the advent of high-speed networks and technologies such as SIP (session initiation protocol) and IMS (IP multimedia subsystem) will maximize the role of the digital camera in high-end devices as a mechanism central to rich content sharing across fixed and mobile networks and between IP-enabled devices.

However, despite the positive outlook for the future of the integrated digital camera within the mobile phone, IDC advises vendors to exercise caution with regard to the notion of the mobile phone's long-term prospects as a converged alternative to a dedicated digital camera.

"Limitations on component quality caused by the requirement to limit BOM (build of material), costs, and total strain on the battery means the dedicated digital camera will always retain both a quality and cost advantage over the mobile phone," said Geoff Blaber, research analyst, European Mobile Devices. "While camera phones will cannibalize limited demand at the low end of the digital camera market, IDC believes that integrated cameras will largely assist digital camera market growth by alerting a broader demographic to the capability of digital photography."

IDC stresses that the requirement for spontaneous image capture, rich image/video messaging, and increasingly the need for two-way cameras to enable video calling will constitute the primary accelerator of camera phone market development between 2005 and 2009.
