Kodak: Chapter 11 Business Reorganization


Eastman Kodak Company announced today that it and its U.S. subsidiaries filed voluntary petitions for chapter 11 business reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.


The business reorganization is intended to bolster liquidity in the U.S. and abroad, monetize non-strategic intellectual property, fairly resolve legacy liabilities, and enable the Company to focus on its most valuable business lines. The Company has made pioneering investments in digital and materials deposition technologies in recent years, generating approximately 75% of its revenue from digital businesses in 2011.

Kodak has obtained a fully-committed, $950 million debtor-in-possession credit facility with an 18-month maturity from Citigroup to enhance liquidity and working capital. The credit facility is subject to Court approval and other conditions precedent. The Company believes that it has sufficient liquidity to operate its business during chapter 11, and to continue the flow of goods and services to its customers in the ordinary course.

Kodak expects to pay employee wages and benefits and continue customer programs. Subsidiaries outside of the U.S. are not subject to proceedings and will honor all obligations to suppliers, whenever incurred. Kodak and its U.S. subsidiaries will honor all post-petition obligations to suppliers in the ordinary course.

“Kodak is taking a significant step toward enabling our enterprise to complete its transformation,” said Antonio M. Perez, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “At the same time as we have created our digital business, we have also already effectively exited certain traditional operations, closing 13 manufacturing plants and 130 processing labs, and reducing our workforce by 47,000 since 2003. Now we must complete the transformation by further addressing our cost structure and effectively monetizing non-core IP assets. We look forward to working with our stakeholders to emerge a lean, world-class, digital imaging and materials science company.”

Chapter 11 gives us the best opportunities to maximize the value in two critical parts of our technology portfolio: our digital capture patents, which are essential for a wide range of mobile and other consumer electronic devices that capture digital images and have generated over $3 billion of licensing revenues since 2003; and our breakthrough printing and deposition technologies, which give Kodak a competitive advantage in our growing digital businesses.”

Mr. Perez concluded, “The Board of Directors, the senior management team and I would like to underscore our appreciation for the hard work and loyalty of our employees. Kodak exemplifies a culture of collaboration and innovation. Our employees embody that culture and are essential to our future success.”

Kodak has taken this step after preliminary discussions with key constituencies and intends to work toward a consensual reorganization in the best interests of its stakeholders. Kodak expects to complete its U.S.-based restructuring during 2013.

The Company and its Board of Directors are being advised by Lazard, FTI Consulting Inc. and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. In addition, Dominic DiNapoli, Vice Chairman of FTI Consulting, will serve as Chief Restructuring Officer to support the management team as to restructuring matters during the chapter 11 case.

YapaFoto annonce la création d'un nouveau service de tirage photo en ligne, disponible exclusivement depuis une application mobile.

YapaFoto est une application pour iPhone qui permet aux utilisateurs de commander des tirages photos directement depuis leur mobile. Avec la particularité que tout se fait sur le téléphone : le choix des photos, l'envoi des fichiers sur la plateforme, le paiement sécurisé... sauf l'impression des photos bien sûr ! L'utilisateur recevra chez lui ses tirages papier, sous deux à trois jours en moyenne. Les commandes se font entièrement et uniquement à travers l'application, il n'est pas possible de commander depuis le site internet. L'application est disponible gratuitement sur l'AppStore pour les terminaux iPhone et iPod Touch. Il n'y a pas pour l'instant de version Android.

L'offre n'est pas encore définitive et sera amenée à évoluer en fonction de la demande. Le client peut choisir de faire développer une à vingt photos, au format numérique classique 11x15cm (adapté aux photos prises par l'iPhone). Le prix est de 22 centimes par photo, auquel s'ajoutent des frais de livraisons variables selon la quantité de photos (2.99€, 3.49€ ou 3.99€). Le prix n'étant pas indiqué dans le colis envoyé, il est possible d'en faire un cadeau.

Enriched creative possibilities

The Alpha 55 and Alpha 33 are compatible with the full range of over 30 A-mount interchangeable lenses and offer SteadyShot INSIDE. This in-body image stabilisation system provides up to 4 exposure steps of anti-shake correction when shooting handheld.

Both cameras also feature 3D Sweep Panorama, allowing photographers to capture detail-packed extra-wide panoramas with a huge field of view. 3D panoramas can be enjoyed on any compatible 3D HD television. The Alpha 55 (but not the Alpha 33) is also the first Alpha camera by Sony with integrated GPS, allowing automatic geo-tagging of images and video clips.

The new-generation Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor inside both cameras supports a sophisticated range of digital image compositing and processing functions. This gives greater artistic possibilities to beginners and photo enthusiasts alike.

Auto HDR is now refined further compared with previous-generation Alpha models. Data from a burst of three frames at bracketed exposure values is automatically combined, creating a single image with extended highlight and shadow detail Multi-frame Noise Reduction 'stacks' a high-speed burst of six frames, creating a single low-noise exposure that boosts effective sensitivity as high as ISO 25600.

The new cameras accept both Memory Stick PRO Duo (including Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo) and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media (all sold separately). Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX 30MB per second transfer rate offers the best performance during cameras' continuous shooting mode or when transferring the data to another media.

IBC2010 Innovation Awards - Amsterdam

IBC2010 Innovation Awards

The shortlist for the IBC2010 Innovation Awards featured projects from around the world and applications from the preservation of formal content to bringing new excitement to sports coverage. The IBC Innovation Awards are unique in celebrating not just the technology but the collaboration between suppliers and end user to create commercially successful and creatively empowering solutions. 

There are three awards for the most innovative use of technology for a new project in content creation, content management and content delivery. In addition there is a fourth award, in the gift of the judges, which could be one of the shortlisted projects, or it could be another project which has caught their eye. 

Michael Lumley, jury chairman for the IBC2010 Innovation Awards, commented “The seven entries on our shortlist are there because they caught the eyes of the judges in two ways: with a real spark of something new and exciting; and in a clear demonstration of the partnership between customer and suppliers. It is when the two come together that there are real benefits.” 

The winners in each of the three categories, and the Judges’ Prize, have been announced at the IBC Awards Ceremony, the 12 September 2010.

The three finalists in content creation are all associated with sport, although in very different ways: 

• live 3D sport from ESPN. The particular production the broadcaster has nominated is its first live stereoscopic 3D broadcast of a top-ranked college football match, between Ohio State and USC in September 2009. This project brought together a large number of technology partners: AJT Systems, Cinedigm, Hyundai, NEP, PaceHD, PVI, Quantel, Reality Check, Sensio and Sony. 

• consistent loudness from the Winter Olympics from NBC Olympics. The broadcaster was keen to create dynamic and exciting audio, originating in 5.1 surround sound, but the very different characteristics of the events meant maintaining consistent perceived loudness, across long live broadcasts, would be a challenge. NBC chose Linear Acoustics as its technology partner. 

• signal distribution at the Red Bull Air Races involved bringing pictures and sound from across a huge area, and from the planes themselves. The organisers chose to carry everything – video, audio, communications and data – on one easily rigged fibre backbone. Fibre also saves shipping many tonnes of copper cables from venue to venue. Technology partners were Riedel, with support from SIVision Outside Broadcast and West4Media Production.

For the content management category there were two shortlisted finalists: 

• multi-platform asset management at Antena 3. The Spanish broadcaster’s newsroom system puts its content on television and on the internet, mobiles, YouTube and social networks, without increasing operational costs. The principle technology partner was Dalet Digital Media Systems, with Apple, Avid, Chyron, I+3 Television, Netapp, Omneon, Quantel, Stornext and Telestream. 

• digital migration and archiving at the European Parliament. The audiovisual unit has an archive stretching back almost half a century on a huge range of formats and media. To provide open access to the content, the new project not only digitises the content but creates an open database that can be searched readily. Technical partners were Front Porch Digital and Broadcasting Centre Europe.

The third category, content delivery, sees both finalists focussing on the rollout of new transmission systems, on opposite sides of the planet: 

• transcontinental DAB+ for Australian Broadcasting Corporation and SBS. Bringing the benefits of digital radio to every corner of this huge country sets huge challenges. The solution was not just the largest implementation of DAB+ to date, it was the first to rely entirely on IP transmission end to end. Technology partners were Broadcast Australia, Radioscape, Telstra and United Group International. 

• DVB-T2 for terrestrial HD, a development project led by BBC R & D on behalf of the DVB Project. As the digital terrestrial switchover in the UK unrolls, so Freeview wanted to deliver high definition as quickly as possible. The development of a second generation terrestrial broadcasting format created the huge increases in transmission efficiency, ruggedness and flexibility required. The DVB-T2 study group was led by BBC R & D but involved 70 individuals representing 40 companies from around the world.

Judges’ Prize: Stereoscopic 3D coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. "Because it was a true partnership of equals, four IBC Judges’ Prizes were presented: to FIFA, to HBS its broadcast partner, to sports specialist channel ESPN, and to Sony which provided much of the technological muscle"

Special Award: The IBC2010 special awards were presented to TV Globo for their innovative project 'Flutuador – TV technology for a better environment' and to UK based satellite broadcaster BskyB for the technology developed to support the world’s first commercial 3D channel, Sky 3D.

3-D movies via Internet and Satellite

Imaging Technology News - The experts from the HHI show how the MVC-Codec functions transmitting television via DVB-S2 satellite.

Blockbusters like Avatar, UP or Toy Story 3 will bring the 3-D into home living rooms, televisions and computers. There are already displays available and the new Blu-Ray players can already play 3-dimensional movies based on Multiview Video Coding (MVC), the new standard for 3-D movie compression. The first soccer games were recorded stereoscopically at the Football World Championships in South Africa. What is missing is an efficient form of transmission.

The problem is the data rate required by the movies – in spite of fast Internet and satellite links. 3D movies have higher data rate requirements than 2-dimensional movies since at least two images are needed for the spatial representation. This means that a 3D screen has to show two images – one for the left and one for the right eye.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut, HHI in Berlin, Germany have already come up with a compression technique for movies in particularly HD quality that squeezes movies while maintaining the quality: the H.264/AVC video format. What H.264/AVC is for HD movies, Multiview Video Coding (MVC) is for 3-D movies. While reducing the data significantly, MVC allows at the same time providing full high-resolution quality. At the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam - September 10-14, 2010 - researchers showcase how 3-D movies can be transmitted via Internet and digital television channels such as via satellite. The benefit is reducing the data rate used on the transmission channel while maintaining the same high-definition quality.

Videos on the Internet have to load quickly so that the viewer can watch the movies without interruptions. Thomas Schierl is a scientist at the HHI in Berlin and he explains that « MVC packs the two images needed for the stereoscopic 3-D effect so that the bit rate of the movies is significantly reduced ». These 3-D movies are up to 40 percent smaller. Thomas Schierl and his colleagues are working to establish the MVC codec for television transmission over satellites or the Internet. « New TV sets will start off by only playing 3-D movies from the Blu-Ray disc that is now coming into the third dimension. The next step to bring 3-D into living rooms will be made possible via broadcast or IPTV channels running via DSL or cable.»

You will be able to experience 3-dimensional movies in your living room in future without any 3-D glasses because the MVC format has the technical features to code and compress several views. After all, everybody enjoying the movie with you on the sofa has a different viewing angle. That is why they need a separate view – their « own »  3-D movie – for his or her individual seat. MVC compresses all of these views into one compact file or stream and one receiver, one set-top box decodes this information and passes it on to the television.

It will also be possible to play the MVC-coded movies on older televisions and set-top boxes and Thomas Schierl tells how: « The first view corresponds to the signal that the existing television can receive and we would hide the second view in the same stream so that only the new receivers can use it. They are invisible to older televisions.» That is especially interesting to movie lenders and television stations because they do not have to worry about compatibility. And even mobile radio and mobile phone manufacturers can join the trend towards 3-D with the MVC standard. In the meantime, there are even displays the size of a mobile phone that allow a good 3-D impression.

Image Sensors: Soitec STMicroelectronics agreement

STMicroelectronics and Soitec have started an exclusive joint cooperation that will lead to the development of 300mm wafer-level backside-illumination (BSI) technology for next-generation image sensors in consumer products.
The resolution of today’s leading-edge image sensors is continuously increasing, while demand is high for the overall reduction of the camera-module footprint, particularly in consumer markets. This means the necessary development of smaller individual pixel sizes, while maintaining pixel sensitivity to produce high-quality images. Backside illumination is a key enabling technology to meet this challenge in the development of next-generation image sensors.
The agreement between the two companies includes the licensing by Soitec to ST of the Smart Stacking™ bonding technology for the manufacturing of backside-illumination sensors on 300mm wafers. This technology, developed by Soitec’s Tracit business unit, leverages molecular bonding, and mechanical, as well as chemical thinning. ST will develop a new generation of image sensors based on its advanced derivative-CMOS process technology at 65nm and beyond, at its 300mm facility in Crolles, France. In combination with ST’s advanced wafer-level manufacturing capabilities, the Smart Stacking technology will enable ST to increase its leadership in developing and supplying high-performance image sensors for mobile consumer products.
Backside illumination technology is a key ingredient in the small-pixel, high-image-quality race for the development of leading-edge image sensors,” said Eric Aussedat, Group Vice President and General Manager, Imaging Division, STMicroelectronics. “Partnering with Soitec will help quickly deploy the Smart Stacking technology into ST’s camera products. This agreement will accelerate the development of advanced and superior cost-competitive image-sensor processes, and further confirms the Grenoble region as a world-class center of expertise for advanced CMOS imaging technologies.”

Western Digital WD TVTM HD Media Player

Le TVTM HD Media Player de Western Digital (WD) transforme votre disque dur portable ou votre appareil photo numérique en lecteurs multimédias HD. Il se raccorde en effet directement à un téléviseur ou à un home cinéma pour permettre la lecture de films, musique et photos sous format numérique à partir d’un disque portable ou de n’importe quel périphérique de stockage de masse USB.

Vodafone HTC Magic Smartphone

The stylish new handset is exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, Spain, Germany and France (SFR) and available on a non-exclusive basis in Italy. The introduction of the HTC Magic is the result of a successful relationship between Vodafone and HTC, and Vodafone’s joining, late last year, of the Open Handset Alliance.

SanDisk All-in-One memory card reader – New version for North America

SanDisk has shipped the latest edition of its popular SanDisk ImageMate memory card reader, with increased efficiency and faster data transfer rates. The new ImageMate All-In-One has shipped to retailers in North America and is available for purchase at this time.
Faster, smaller and sleeker than it predecessor, and featuring upgraded software applications, the new reader quickly transfer data between a wide range of memory card formats and a host computer. The All-In-One memory card reader can reach speeds of up to 34 megabytes per second (performance may vary depending upon host device) when using a SanDisk Extreme IV 45MB/s CompactFlash card. Sporting a glossy black and metallic silver design, the reader’s tripod base is detachable, creating instant portability.
In addition to the traditional drag-and-drop method, the new SanDisk ImageMate reader streamline the process of transferring digital content by including a transfer button that automatically launches a user-defined application or web site. A single press of the reader’s button will open a designated application such as Photoshop or a Flickr account, and from there the user can transfer or edit photos. Un téléphone « bloc-notes photographique » de 5 mégapixels

Nokia today announced that it has started deliveries of the Nokia N70, a compact, easy-to-use 3G smartphone. Incorporating a complete smartphone feature set, as well as a 2 megapixel camera, flash and front camera for video calling, the Nokia N70 comes fully equipped with a digital music player and stereo audio.

The Nokia N70 also supports Symantec Mobile Security, an integrated antivirus and firewall solution.
Equipped with a digital music player and FM radio with support for Visual Radio, the Nokia N70 also doubles as a great pocketable music device. Moreover, the music experience can be taken to the next level with the separately available Nokia Music Pack, with which users can transfer music quickly from compatible PCs, listen to music through standard stereo headphones or even plug the Nokia N70 to a compatible home stereo system for stereo playback or recording.
The Nokia N70 is among the first Nokia devices to include the Catalogs Client mobile shopping application, making it easy for users to quickly discover, trial, download and purchase new applications, services and content designed for the Nokia N70.
