Camels and kittens, elephants and rats, feathered creatures and cute pets. ARKEN invites visitors to enter the animal kingdom of art, a realm filled with beautiful, strange and incredible creatures. The exhibition Animals in Art presents works by thirty-four international artists who explore our relationship with animals – and do so with humour, wit and bite.

In recent years, the relationship between humans and animals is widely explored in contemporary art. The exhibition Animals in Art delves into various aspects of this huge field, which includes critical takes on human manipulation of animals as well as cheerful celebrations of animals as wonderful creatures.

Animals in Art explores how we humans use, look at, talk about and anthropomorphise animals. We are regularly seduced by adorable animals on the shelves of toy stores and on the internet; we love our pets and look for the human in them – or for the animal in ourselves. Animals are everywhere in our fables, adventures and mythologies, where we attribute human language and behaviour to them. We are fascinated by wild animals when visiting them at the zoo or in museums, and we tamper with the natural development of species, with the environment and with biodiversity when we produce animals industrially and fiddle with DNA, the building blocks of life. The exhibition offers many different takes on how we see and understand ourselves through other animal species. For example, it explores ‘cuteness’ as a pervasive phenomenon in our consumer and entertainment culture, influencing how we put animals into categories and assess their value.

Featuring sculpture, installation, paintings, video and photography by thirty-four international artists, Animals in Art forms a sensuous, thought-provoking and engaging menagerie. For example, you can come face to face with a life-sized floating elephant, watch YouTube cats playing atonal piano pieces by Arnold Schönberg and take a fresh look at the artificial environments created by zoos.

Inside ARKEN’s 150-metre long exhibition space known as the Art Axis, the museum presents fifteen feathered polar bears created by Italian-born artist Paola Pivi. For this presentation, called We are the Alaskan tourists, Paola Pivi has replaced the polar bears’ familiar thick, white fur with light, brightly coloured summery feathers, directing our thoughts away from the harsh climate of Alaska towards southern skies and the carnivals of Brazil. The polar bear is known as The King of the Arctic; a powerful and majestic beast. Today, however, the polar bear has also become a symbol of a dystopian future. It leads an uncertain existence in territories now threatened by climate change. Perhaps this flock of tourists have sought refuge at ARKEN. Adapting to the current climate of our planet, they have replaced their warm fur with frothy feathers.

For the first time, Museum Kunstpalast is showing an overview exhibition of CANDIDA HOFER, comprising approximately 70 works created exclusively in Dusseldorf in the course of 40 years. The presentation includes large-scale individual works, work groups, projections and an early film by the artist, which she shot jointly with Tony Morgan in the Düsseldorf ice cream parlour Da Forno in 1975. Most of the works have never been shown to the public.

Candida Höfer work is closely linked with the city of Düsseldorf. It was here where her first solo exhibition was staged in a gallery, and here she came across new and very different motifs time and again ever since she began to study with Bernd Becher at the Academy of Art. 

"Düsseldorf" stands for beginnings. But it is not only about the work of that time, "Düsseldorf" also shows th ways in which I work today. So it is about work back then and work today. It is about change -- Candida Höfer.

Candida Höfer’s oeuvre is characterised by cool objectivity, a keen interest in structures and order in public spaces, and by a precise grasp of details. Apart from large-scale interiors, such as the Düsseldorf Opera Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Schauspielhaus theatre, or the photographs of the interiors of a number of art institutions, such as Museum Kunstpalast or the Julia Stoschek Collection, the exhibition also shows pictures from her first photographic series Turks in Germany. 

As regards the development of Candida Höfer’s work, some of her recent works are illuminating, such as the pictures of the Neue Stahlhof, which point towards a new, more abstract direction. While in the past the artist most frequently revealed correlations in her pictures, she today concentrates on an individual object, such as a staircase, on which she put a spotlight.

While Candida Höfer initially chose a hand camera and accepted that blurring occurred, she today uses a digital large-format caméra, which requires long exposure times, but offers a wealth of image editing options. She takes décisions regarding the work's size, colours and choses whether it remains an individual picture or is integrated into a series.

Like Andreas Gursky, Axel Hütte, Tata Ronkholz or Thomas Struth, Candida Höfer is part of the internationally renowned "Dusseldorf School of Photography". Candida Höfer's large-format architectural photographs have been widely shown, including the documenta in Kassel, the Venice Biennial, and in numerous solo exhibitions in Europe, Asia and the USA.

Candida Höfer, who lives and works in Cologne, completed a traineeship in the renowned photographie studio Schmölz-Huth from 1963 until 1964 and subsequently studied artistic photography with Arno Jansen at the Kölner Werkschule until 1968. Having worked in Werner Bokelberg's photographie studio, she resumed studies in 1973 with Ole John in the film class of the Dusseldörf Academy of Art. Here, she subsequently studied with Bernd Becher from 1976 until 1982.

From 1997 until 2000 Candida Höfer was Professor of Photography at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe. She is member of the Freie Akademie der Künste Hamburg and of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts in Düsseldorf. 

Catalogue 

Accompagnying the exhibition, a comprehensive 192 pages catalogue in German and English is published by Richter|Fey Verlag, with contributions by Lothar Baumgarten, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Fanni Fetzer, Friedrich Wolfram Heubach, Candida Höfer, Gabriele Hofer-Hagenauer, Erika Krugel, Gunda Luyken, Michael Oppitz and Friedemann von Stockhausen.

On occasion of the exhibition two photographs dated 2011 are released as a special edition: Benrather Schloss IV 2011 and Dreischeibenhaus Düsseldorf IV 2011.

The Special Bureau for Artistic and Ethnoanthropological Historical Heritage and for Rome’s Museum Network presents the CANDIDA HOFER AT GALLERIA BORGHESE exhibition. 

The famous Galleria del Lanfranco hosts seven works by the great artist portraying the original reconstruction of the Borghese collection, which was restored to its origins during the I Borghese e l’Antico exhibition (December 2011 – April 2012, curated by Anna Coliva and Marina Minozzi for Galleria Borghese and by Jean-Luc Martinez and Marie Lou Fabréga-Dubert for the Louvre) which brought back to the Gallery the most important ancient art masterpieces that once belonged to the collection, mostly collected by Cardinal Scipione Borghese at the beginning of the Seventeenth century and currently making up the core of the Paris Louvre Museum antiques collection, following the sale imposed by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte on his brother-in-law Camillo Borghese in 1807. 

Candida Höfer’s work therefore represents the only existing evidence of the collection in its original set-up, which will never be replicated again: some kind of miracle that will never repeat itself. The underlying concept of the exhibition is that out of the reconstruction of an art masterpiece such as the Galleria Borghese collection in its original makeup, another work of art was created. 

In that occasion Candida Höfer – known for her incomparable way of perceiving places and reproducing them through her camera – had therefore documented the mounting of the exhibition halls through the photos that are now in display in their original location, the Galleria itself. 

The exhibition curated by Mario Codognato, Anna Coliva and Marina Minozzi is an exceptional, unique event and will enable visitors to virtually walk through the halls of “The most beautiful villa in the world” - Antonio Canova’s definition - and experience the fascinating atmosphere generated by the exceptional return to their place of origin of the masterpieces of one of the most distinguished and prestigious archaeological collection of all times.

CANDIDA HOFER EXHIBITION

The seven large-size photos – roughly 180 x 200 centimeters – exhibited in the Lanfranco Hall, portray the Villa and reproduce the setting up of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, when sculptures belonging to the celebrated Borghese archaeological collection were still displayed in the Museum halls, in a charming sequence of images. 

Masterpieces such as The Three Graces and The Sleeping Hermaphroditus feature in Candida Hofer’s photos alonside masterpieces of modern sculpture, such as the The Rape of Proserpina by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and the famous Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix by Antonio Canova.

However, the true protagonists of these pictures are not only these extraordinary sculptures but also the Galleria as a whole: its history, its furniture, its works: all these elements make Candida Höfer’s photographs unique and the exhibition a one-off opportunity.

Candida Hofer’s photos stir up emotions thanks to their historical background, their perspective and the brightness of the place itself, defining its original aspects and raising the images to an eternal, absolute dimension.

The exhibition has been organised by Galleria Borghese thanks to Telecom Italia’s support and with the cooperation of Arthemisia Group. The exhibition has also been sponsored by Borghi Italia – Art Division, Axa Art, Arte Assicurazioni srl, Parco dei Principi Grand Hotel and Spa.

THE ARTIST CANDIDA HOFFER

Candida Höfer features among the most relevant artists of German contemporary photography. She was born in Eberswalde, Germany, in 1944 and is a leading exponent of “the School of Dusseldorf”.  She started her artistic career in 1975 taking then part in several international exhibitions, such as Documenta in Kassel in 2002 and Biennale in Venice in 2003, where she exhibited her work in the German Pavillion. Her works feature in the collections of many international museums, such as Centre Pompidou in Paris, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, Kunthalle in Basel.

Candida Höfer is renowned for her shots of public spaces, such as museums, libraries, archives, theatres, offices, banks, waiting rooms, underground stations and other culturally and socially crowded places which however stand out due to the total absence of human presence. As a matter of fact, it is a “non-presence” rather than an absence: the portrayed locations seem to be suspended, waiting, ready to welcome the human being, the real protagonist, enjoying those museums and frequenting those libraries.

As a very famous gallery in Paris, Galerie Chantal Crousel represented internationaly recognized artists. Chantal Crousel founded its gallery in 1980. The gallery is located 10 rue Charlot in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris. Niklas Svennung, the son and associate of Chantal Crousel, opens a second space named La Douane Galerie Chantal Crousel in the 10th arrondissement of Paris: 11F rue Léon Jouhaux which is an extension of the principal space. Among the artists represented by Chantal Crousel Gallery are Mona Hatoun, Gabriel Orozco and José Maria Sicilia, whose recent works will be presented at Art Dubai 2013.

Candida Höfer's photographs continue her careful cataloguing of public urban interiors. The absence of people in her pictures allows viewers to focus on the specifics of architecture, decorative and functional elements, furniture and other indicators of human engineering and aesthetic choice that reveal much about the absent choosers and users of the spaces. Besides the basic features of the rooms are the accidental relationships - amusing , surreal, ironic - that occur. Examples are the sad scene of a lone vase of flowers waving to a circle of chairs who appear to have turned their backs, and the rolling specimen tables unsure how to proceed in with a room full of similar tables lined up like soldiers.

Candida Höfer exhibits her work internationally and recently was included in Documenta 11 in Kassel, Germany. A traveling survey show in the United States is currently being organized by the Norton Museum of Art and the California State University, Long Beach, University Art Museum.
