The Museum of Modern Art presents an exhibition showcasing MoMA’s recent acquisition of Nature Studies, a portfolio of 46 botanical drawings by the Swedish artist HILMA AF KLINT (1862–1944), which will be on display for the first time. Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind Flowers explores af Klint’s engagement with the natural world. Created during the spring and summer of 1919 and 1920, the Nature Studies portfolio presents the wonders of Sweden’s flora and showcases the artist’s keen botanical eye. Hilma af Klint combines her renowned approach to abstraction with traditional botanical drawing, juxtaposing detailed renderings of plants discovered in her surroundings with enigmatic abstract diagrams. Examples include a sunflower paired with concentric circles, a narcissus crowned by a pinwheel of primary colors, and tree blossoms accompanied by checkerboards of dots and strokes. Through these forms, af Klint seeks to reveal, in her words, “what stands behind the flowers,” reflecting her belief that studying nature uncovers truths about the human condition. Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind Flowers is organized by Jodi Hauptman, The Richard Roth Senior Curator, Department of Drawings and Prints, with Kolleen Ku, Curatorial Assistant, and Chloe White, Louise Bourgeois Fellow, Department of Drawings and Prints. Realized with the participation of the Hilma af Klint Foundation, Stockholm.

The exhibition focuses on the years 1917 to 1922, contextualizing the MoMA portfolio and highlighting a pivotal shift in af Klint’s practice. In 1917, no longer satisfied with only receiving direction from spiritual guides, Hilma af Klint embarked on a path of self-study, culminating in the Nature Studies drawings. The exhibition opens with this new approach, seen in her adoption of an abstract diagrammatic vocabulary in works like the 1917 Atom series, one of many key loans from the Hilma af Klint Foundation in Stockholm. This section also highlights in landscapes and botanical drawing her ongoing dedication to observation. As Hilma af Klint noted, “First, I shall try to penetrate the flowers of the earth; use as a point of departure the plants of the earth.” The second section focuses on the Nature Studies, along with related notebooks that allow visitors to experience af Klint’s reflections on the plants she studied, as well as botanical source materials. The final section presents her ongoing interest in exploring the connection between nature and spirituality, but with a new method. In the 1922 series On the Viewing of Flowers and Trees, Hilma af Klint employs a wet-on-wet watercolor technique, using vibrant color to express the spiritual power of plants.

“While we often think of artists of the early 20th century as focused on new technologies—and the hustle and bustle of modern life—for many, the natural world was a crucial touchstone. MoMA’s Nature Studies reveal af Klint as an artist uniquely attuned to nature. We hope that attunement—her demonstration of careful observation and discovery of all that stands behind the flowers—encourages our audience to look closely and see their own surroundings, whether here in the city or beyond, in new ways,” says Jodi Hauptman.

The exhibition reveals, for the first time, the extent of af Klint’s plant knowledge and the ways her botanical experience shaped her artistic vision. Through research for this exhibition, seven previously unknown drawings by Hilma af Klint of mushroom species, commissioned by the renowned Swedish mycologist M. A. Lindblad, were discovered in the archives at the Swedish Museum of Natural History. They are loaned to MoMA, and shown in the US for the first time, to demonstrate af Klint’s commitment to close observation of the natural world and her drawing within a scientific context. The discovery was made through the research collaboration of Dr. Lena Struwe, director of the Chrysler Herbarium at Rutgers University and professor at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, a contributor to the exhibition and its catalogue; and Dr. Johannes Lundberg, curator in the Department of Botany at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, who identified this previously unknown group of drawings. Further, as a crucial element of the exhibition’s research, MoMA associate conservator Laura Neufeld conducted the firstever technical analysis of af Klint’s methods and materials on paper.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue and a limited-edition facsimile.

A visual timeline traces the historical context of the works, their thematic connections to contemporary events, and their significance for the programmatic development of the Kestner Gesellschaft. Past and present intertwine in a vibrant dialogue that offers impetuses for future perspectives and makes the relationships between art, institutions, and society tangible.

The posters and limited-edition works refer to the diverse thematic exhibitions and projects that address societal and artistic questions of recent years: Tenderness (2022) focused on sensitivity and vulnerability, Anabasis (2023) explored movement and return, and Between Past and Future (2024) addresses Hannah Arendt’s thoughts on social responsibility and memory.

Since its founding in 1916, the Kestner Gesellschaft has collaborated closely with artists to release limited editions several times a year. These works form an essential part of its activities and significantly contribute to the accessibility, promotion, and visibility of contemporary art. beyond now. Editions not only offers the opportunity to explore the history of the institution’s exhibitions and limited-edition works but also to purchase these works.

In addition to historical works, the exhibition presents two new limited-edition works: Paloma Varga Weisz displays bronze sculptures from her series Wild People (2024), inspired by mythical and archetypal figures. And Monilola Olayemi Ilupeju presents her handmade book BloodLetter (2024), which interweaves personal stories in poems, essays and journal entries.

Environmental issues are an important concern for the Kestner Gesellschaft. The exhibition was designed for sustainability by using only existing interior equipment. This concept reflects a responsible approach to resource management and underscores the institution’s endeavor to address current challenges not only thematically but also practically.

Presented for the first time in the dark days of the early 1940’s by Pignons SA, the registration of the ALPA brand took finally place on 19th February 1946. Originating from the Swiss watchmaking industry they produced legendary 35mm cameras made in Switzerland. ALPA of Switzerland and the ALPA 12 medium format system were born. Therefore ALPA of Switzerland celebrates today and in 2016 both its 20th anniversary in medium format with the ALPA 12 platform and its 70th birthday as a camera brand.

In order to commemorate this anniversary, ALPA launches a special edition of its very first medium format model - the ALPA 12 SWA. Paying tribute and bridging the last 70 years the ALPA Anniversary Edition is dedicated to analog photography with its 6x9 roll film back and a special edition of the Rodenstock/ALPA HR Alpagon 5.6/70 mm lens which suits perfectly also the most recent digital backs up to 100 MP today. Lee Bul, Lehmann Maupin, Hong Kong, Inaugural Exhibition

Lee BulLehmann Maupin Inaugural Hong Kong Exhibition
Through May 11, 2013

Lehmann Maupin inaugurated this month (14 March) its first international exhibition space in the historic Pedder Building in Hong Kong with a solo presentation of new work by korean artist LEE BUL, on view through 11 May 2013. The gallery has represented Lee Bul since 2007, and in that time, she has been the subject of two solo exhibitions at Lehmann Maupin, New York. The inaugural exhibition at Lehmann Maupin, Hong Kong marks the first solo presentation of Lee Bul’s work in China.

Considered the leading Korean artist of her generation, LEE BUL has achieved international recognition for her formally inventive, intellectually provocative oeuvre. Characterized by an unwavering defiance of boundaries, Lee Bul’s work demonstrates a commitment to exploring a variety of challenging media while experimenting with form. Her work is influenced by and references utopian thought found in literature, art and architecture, which are formally applied in sculptural works that refer to society’s pursuit of perfection in all forms of life; physically and as a society. Her work is evident of her vast knowledge and interest in tackling themes relating to human nature while remaining inventive, analytical, and producing thoughtful and masterfully constructed works.

For the inaugural show, Lee Bul has envisioned a dynamic installation that continues her exploration of ideas about utopia and the human condition; one that works in harmony with the gallery’s original architectural character, which was left intact during the renovation process. The exhibition features new sculptures intricately crafted by hand from polyurethane. Resembling small, imaginary landscapes or futuristic ruins, the surface of these sculptures are deliberately finished with patterns of brushstrokes evoking a poetic, painterly feel. This quality is echoed in the selection of the artist’s drawings that are on view alongside the sculptures. Drawing has long been an integral and vital part of Lee Bul’s practice, an outlet for experimentation in ideas and forms that may eventually take shape as finished sculptural works.

Of her creative process, Lee Bul has remarked, “I start to sketch or just write about my ideas and put them up all over my wall in my studio, and everyday I watch this grow into a map of ideas until one day I think, ‘Maybe I can make this more concrete and specific.’” Rounding out the exhibition, there are three sculptures from one of the artist’s existing bodies of work that also engage with metaphysical and poetic concepts of architectural environments.

One of the exhibition’s special features is a limited-edition artist book titled Mon Grand Récit: Not Every Fallen Leaf, featuring a suite of drawings produced as visual research for a series of works presented by the Cartier Foundation in 2008. The drawings are accompanied by poetic, epigrammatic texts authored by the American art critic, Barry Schwabsky. Of the 1,001 signed and numbered copies, 1 to 240 are “Art Editions” presented in solander cases, hand painted by the artist. Each “Art Edition” is a unique part of larger sequential groups that when combined together form a larger painting. The special “Art Editions” was launched at Lehmann Maupin, Hong Kong on opening day.

LEE BUL (b. 1964) grew up in Seoul, Korea, and received a BFA in sculpture from Hongik University, Seoul, in 1987. Her work has been exhibited extensively on an international level with solo shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1997); Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland (1999); Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia (2001); MAC, Musée d’Art Contemporain, Marseille, France (2002); New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2002); Le Consortium, Dijon, France (2002); Japan Foundation, Tokyo (2003); Power Plant, Toronto (2003); Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2004); Domus Artium, Salamanca, Spain (2007); Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris (2007 – 2008); and most recently, the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2012); and the Artsonje Center, Seoul (1998 and 2012), among others. In March 2010, a permanent installation entitled "A Fragmentary Anatomy of Every Setting Sun" was unveiled at the Hara Museum ARC, Japan. Forthcoming solo exhibitions are scheduled at MUDAM – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg, in 2013 and at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK, in 2014. Lee Bul’s work is part of numerous public collections around the world.

Carl Zeiss medium format lenses ZV Classic

Carl Zeiss ZV Classic Lenses – Limited Special Edition for the V System
With a limited high-quality special edition of lenses for three different focal lengths, Carl Zeiss offers enthusiasts of the Hasselblad V system a special treat. The series is limited to 1,000 lenses for each of the focal lengths. Each lens receives a certificate with the edition number and is delivered with a leather case and an attractive presentation box. The company thus honors one of the most popular professional systems for traditional medium format photography.
Dr. Winfried Scherle, Vice President of the Camera Lens Division at Carl Zeiss, emphasizes that “the Hasselblad system holds a special place at the summit of camera technology. We are proud to have been active contributors to this success for more than 50 years. With this special series, enthusiasts of this proven system receive three high-quality products that recall the first ZEISS lenses for the V bayonet, but are state-of-the-art medium format lenses."
This special series covers three of the most popular focal lengths of this system: the wide-angle classic Distagon T* 4/50 ZV, the universal macro lens Makro-Planar T* 4/120 ZV and the Sonnar T* 4/180 ZV, popular for portrait photography.
They are outstanding examples of value-retaining, high-performance optics featuring extraordinary, elegant stability. Thanks to their excellent imaging properties, these lenses are also ideal for digital photography. The robust, all-metal mounts guarantee mechanical precision. The noble, silver satin finish underscores the high-quality of these lenses and recalls memories of the first Carl Zeiss lens for the V system introduced in 1957.
The lenses of the ZV Classic series will be incrementally available at authorized dealers from May 2008 and on the Carl Zeiss homepage www.zeiss.com/photo
