photokina 2016: Imaging unlimited - New concept, new campaign

Photokina 2016
Cologne
20 - 25 september 2016

A good eight months prior to photokina, the leading international trade fair for the entire photo, video and imaging branch, the organisers present a new concept and a new campaign for the show. Under the claim of 'Imaging unlimited', photokina should continue developing into a content and solution-oriented event. "photokina stands for the unlimited possibilities of imaging. Thanks to smartphones and tablets, new target groups of image enthusiasts are arising which we want to reach with the concept", according to Katharina C. Hamma, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH. "The concept exploits the full potential of the imaging branch and offers chances for sustained growth in the changing imaging environment." The Photoindustrie-Verband e.V., co-organiser of photokina, is just as convinced. "With the reorientation and the focus on future-related themes and strategic growth areas of the industry, we have set the course for the expansion and reinforcement of photokina as a leading international show", says Christian Müller-Rieker, managing director of the association. The concept is initially visible in the form of the new advertising campaign, which convinces with a fresh and dynamic presence. The colour world and the key visual express this with strong visuals. The new presence can already be seen online at www.photokina.com. The new advertising presence is flanked by PR measures, social media promotions and events that have already been presented in an attention-getting fashion in the city of Cologne prior to the trade fair.

Photography and filming take place everywhere and all the time these days. Anyone with a smartphone, a tablet or, of course, a camera can record his world without limits in unusual and exciting images. photokina expresses precisely this with 'Imaging unlimited' and the new key visual. The colour world in red and cyan lends the event a dynamic, fresh appearance. The two colours contrast one another and generate maximum brilliance and colour effect through this contrast. The field of tension underlines the limitlessness of the "Imaging unlimited" claim. The campaign and the claim were developed and realised by the Webguerillas agency in Cologne.

In order to communicate the new concept of photokina to a broad public and make the show a more intense experience, events in the city and at photokina, as well as new themes are planned. In live performances, in the Copter World or the Action Hall, visitors have the possibility to themselves become part of "Imaging unlimited" and try out new camera, film and photo technologies and techniques. The theme of moving images becomes an area of focus in the context of a short film festival and through cooperation with influencers from the branch, for example, AlexiBexi, familiar from YouTube. The city of Cologne will also celebrate the show with a photokina festival in the form of photo promotions, workshops and major projections.

Kodak Nexpress Photo Platform with Print Genius presented at Photokina 2010

Kodak presents its all-new Kodak Nexpress Photo Platform with Print Genius at Photokina 2010

New Kodak Nexpress Photo Platform with Print Genius Photo © Eastman Kodak Company

The all-new KODAK NEXPRESS Photo Platform with Print Genius is designed for the printing of high-quality photo products, whether these products originate on a desktop, online, on a Kodak Kiosk, or at a retail outlet like a KODAK EXPRESS store or retail partner. The solution is based on proprietary intellectual property and Kodak's expertise in image science, materials, digital technology, software and hardware.

The NEXPRESS Photo Platform features photo quality output and productivity for the production of printed photo products, including hard and soft cover photo books, calendars, greeting cards, 4x6 prints, magnets, and other photo products. Designed to deliver effects such as raised printing and matte or gloss coating, the NEXPRESS Photo Platform is a good solution for photo specialty printers, photo labs, commercial printers, and others who serve customers in the photo space.

The NEXPRESS Photo Platform is a complete solution that includes Kodak Creative Production Software for consumer photo products or Kodak Professional Digital Print Production Software (DP2) for professional labs. These software packages come preloaded with photo product templates such as photo books and calendars, and come with KODAK PERFECT TOUCH Technology algorithms for auto-correcting images for consistent, high-quality photographic products.

The solution includes a new KODAK NEXPRESS VI Photo Front End which enables class-leading RIP technology that optimizes processing to keep files moving to the press. This capability provides significant advantages in photo workflows where extreme productivity is needed to meet seasonal demand. The NEXPRESS VI Photo Front End also includes advanced photo screens and noise filter options.

Other features include new small particle-sized dry inks that increase quality and reduce ink usage, a new fifth imaging unit light black ink to optimize grain, a higher density black dry ink for darker blacks, a new Matte Fuser Roller option for a matte finish that enables smoother tones and less gloss, and the ability to print on longer sheets-up to 26 inches or 660 mm. Longer sheets enable larger book covers and more impositions per sheet for higher productivity (up to 131 ppm).

The second generation KODAK NEXPRESS Intelligent Calibration System (ICS) delivers consistently high quality that minimizes downtime and costs by minimizing parts replacement. The ICS is at the core of a closed-loop quality control system that maintains accurate color reproduction and increases image quality. In addition, the system uses industry-leading LED imaging heads, an inline scanner, and software based on Kodak's proprietary image science to allow for automatic color management while the press is printing.

Like all NEXPRESS Presses, the NEXPRESS Photo Platform is designed to reduce environmental impact. Prints are de-inkable using standard industry processes, and Dry Inks do not contain lead or phthalates above limits for children's products established by section 102 of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.

Built on proven KODAK NEXPRESS Press technology with Print Genius, the new family of presses features a monthly duty cycle in excess of 4,000,000 pages and supports more than 600 different substrates. With longer sheets, the different models print at speeds of 91, 109, or 131 ppm.

Kodak Products are backed by Kodak Service and Support in about 120 countries. It is a multi-vendor integrated services provider, delivering consulting, installation, maintenance and support services for commercial printing, graphic communications, document imaging, data storage and retail industries.

Kodak at Photokina 2002

Kodak Introduces Broad Array of Products at Photokina Underscoring Confidence in Future of infoimaging Industry

Eastman Kodak Company introduced, at Photokina 2002, a broad array of traditional and digital photographic products and services that will give consumers, retailers, and professionals alike better ways to take, print and share pictures, extending the company's leadership position in imaging.

"The products we are introducing here at Photokina, from easy-to-use one-time-use cameras for consumers, to traditional photographic papers that last more than a century, to a breakthrough new 14-mega pixel digital camera for professionals, prove far better than words that Kodak is investing for future growth," said Daniel A. Carp, Kodak's chairman and chief executive officer.

Despite the current economic situation, Carp is bullish on the long- term prospects for the imaging industry and Kodak's leading role in delivering the benefits of the digital transition to customers.

"Every indication points to a continued appetite for pictures by consumers and commercial customers, despite the current tough economy," Carp added. "As the economy resumes growth, we expect the $80 billion worldwide photography industry to play a major role in the broader category of infoimaging, a $385 billion market formed by the convergence of imaging science and information technology. Kodak is well positioned within this field of opportunity in its consumer, commercial and professional businesses."

Kodak's investments are guided by four key strategies, according to Martin Coyne, II, executive vice president and head of the company's Photography Group. The group accounts for about 70% of Kodak's sales, which totaled $13.2 billion last year.

These four strategies, which Kodak calls the Critical Few, are:

- Expand the benefits of film.
- Drive output the printing of pictures in all forms.
- Make digital imaging easier.
- Create new businesses and new markets.

"Everything we do starts with the customer in mind," Coyne said. "We begin by understanding first what the customer needs, and then we work to develop products and services that give them better pictures and better ways to share those pictures."

A sampling of the Kodak products and services being introduced at Photokina reflect the company's effort to fulfill the four key strategies. For example:

Kodak is expanding the benefits of film with a completely new lineup of one-time-use cameras, the fastest growing traditional photographic product. New products cover all segments of the market, including a high- performance Kodak Ultra model that offers picture-taking performance that compares with a reloadable camera; a specialty Kodak Sport model for underwater use capable of picture taking at depths of 10 meters; and the Kodak Fun, a value tier offering that brings Kodak quality to price conscious consumers.

Kodak is making digital easier for professionals and consumers. A stunning new digital camera for professionals features a near 14 megapixel sensor and the industry's first 35-mm size CMOS sensor in an SLR model, giving professional photographers unprecedented performance and freedom. And the latest models in the company's EasyShare family of consumer digital cameras, led by a sleek, titanium-bodied zoom model, are the easiest-to-use digital cameras available from any manufacturer and are becoming the de facto industry standard for ease of use in consumer digital photography, according to industry reports.

Kodak is helping customers generate more output with new photographic papers for professionals, as well as consumer snapshots that will last more than a century in typical home display, enabling people to enjoy their photographs for generations. These papers are designed to produce outstanding results in either optical or digital processing equipment. Kodak also introduced a totally new family of photo kiosks designed to make it easier than ever for consumers to get great prints from their digital cameras at retail, or to make existing photographs better with easy-to-use software to improve and enhance pictures, making it easy to create enlargements, gifts and photo novelty items.

Kodak demonstrated at Photokina the Kodak mobile photo album, a new business concept it is exploring to link the power of pictures with mobile communications. In test today in Germany, consumers can have a retailer upload their pictures to a special web site. They can then call up their images on the newest generation of mobile telephones and share their images with others via wireless communications. The company's components business also introduced a 22-megapixel image sensor the highest resolution digital imaging sensor available to the market today designed to give other camera manufacturers a device that brings Kodak technology to a broader set of customers.

At Photokina 1998, Polaroid is introducing the world’s first single-use, totally recyclable instant camera that comes complete with ten ready-to-go instant pictures, measuring 4-3/8 x 2-1/2-inches (11.2 x 6.4cm).

The same film format in an economical reloadable camera with its own unique contemporary styling also makes its first European appearance at the Cologne photographic show. Launched earlier this year in Japan, the new Polaroid JoyCam "Hippaley" (Japanese for "pull out") compact camera, like Single-Use Instant , features manual film ejection and a go-anywhere configuration. The new JoyCam has rapidly become the camera of choice in its premiere market among trend-setting teens and young adults, along with the new Polaroid Xiao (from the Chinese for "small" and "smile"), the world’s smallest Polaroid camera. Also a major hit from Nippon Polaroid K.K., the Xiao camera produces mini Polaroid instant pictures measuring 1.4 x 1-inch (36 x 24mm) and has proven to be the ideal portrait camera with photos being taken, traded, worn on clothing and attached to notebooks and schoolbags. The Xiao camera accepts new 12-exposure Polaroid "Pocket Film." The new, very fun camera and film are scheduled for global introduction in 1999.

New Polaroid ColorShot: World’s Fastest Digital Photo Printer

Following its introduction in its advanced USB (Universal Serial Bus) version in Hanover, Germany, earlier this year, Polaroid’s new ColorShot digital color printer premieres at Photokina ‘98 in a parallel-port version designed for "legacy" computers.

Polaroid ColorShot is the world’s fastest (as quick as 25 seconds) digital color printer providing photo-quality instant color pictures on the desktop using new self-developing Polaroid ColorShot film or Polaroid Image film. The new ColorShot printer provides a true digital "darkroom" for rapid hard-copies of photos captured on the Internet, from e-mail, from a digital camera and from scanned images.

Accompanying the ColorShot debut is the premiere of Polaroid’s new "Connectibles" series of "DirectConnect" cables with integral control unit allowing transfer of digital images to the ColorShot digital printer without the intervention of a computer.

Polaroid is demonstrating its new software called DirectPhoto that permits inclusion of photos in e-mail without the recipient requiring special photo-receipt software and for incorporating photos in desktop publications.

Extreme Films

Also on view at Photokina were Polaroid’s "Extreme" films: a sharper, brighter, bolder, faster-appearing film for Polaroid 600-series cameras and larger-format Image cameras (known as Spectra cameras in the United States) called Extreme Gloss; a matte-surfaced film called Extreme Matte for Polaroid 600 instant photography permits after-exposure creative enhancement with pen, pencils and markers; and black-and-white Extreme Monochrome film for Polaroid 600-series cameras. In the United States and other select world markets, Polaroid’s new Extreme film generation is known as Platinum (Extreme Gloss), AlterImage (Extreme Matte) and Black-and-White (Extreme Monochrome) film.

Newly Styled Cameras for New Customers, New Markets

Complementing Polaroid’s new Extreme film line is the new Polaroid 600 Extreme instant camera, sporting the recently Euro-restyled architecture of the newest Polaroid 600 camera line.

Also on display is the Polaroid SpiceCam -- the European hit in instant photography over the past year and the first Polaroid camera to be named after a rock group -- the Spice Girls.

BabyCam Kit Polaroid is also launching its first-ever "BabyCam" kit in Europe, which features a Polaroid 600 instant camera, an instant visual diary/album for "your baby’s first moments shared in an instant," and distinctive new packaging. The BabyCam kit is designed and packaged to allow retailers, photographic outlets, specialty baby and maternity shops as well as mass merchandisers to promote via point-of-sale displays the once-in-a-lifetime benefits of taking Polaroid instant photographs of the new baby.

They include the 900 FF (for Focus Free) and 900 AF (for Auto Focus) -- both featuring an extra-large viewfinder for more accurate photo composition. The new Polaroid 900-series of high-fashion, high-style 35mm cameras includes the economically priced new Polaroid 900 Zoom camera with a macro-lens setting for dramatic close-ups and a 2:1 (35mm-70mm) motorized zoom-lens. All three new Polaroid 35mm cameras are fully automatic in operation.

New Polaroid Professional Films

For professional photographers, Polaroid has expanded the formats available in its latest highly acclaimed professional film range to include a new 4 x 5-inch

- (9 x 12cm) instant color sheet film called Polacolor 79 and a new 8 x 10-inch

- (18 x 24cm) instant color film called Polacolor 879. The new films, making their world debut at Photokina ‘98, join with the range of Polaroid professional "peel-apart" instant films launched earlier including 10-exposure 3-1/4 x 4-1/4-inch

- (8.2 x 10.8cm) films for professional photographers and for "Studio Polaroid" franchisees, as well as a convenient 4 x 5-inch (9 x 12 cm) Polacolor pack film.

Products for Retailers and Studio Express Franchisees

Bringing the latest technology to instant document portraiture for retailers and Studio Express franchisees, Polaroid is unveiling its new Studio Polaroid 302 Camera System featuring a handheld video camera with built-in LCD "pose preview" screen for passport and other document portraits; the economical new Studio Polaroid 350 Video Document Picture System for Polaroid instant photographic prints; and the ultimate digital "solution" for portrait documents and other client photo services -- the new, high-tech Studio Polaroid 700 Digital Document Imaging System.

Polaroid DirectPhoto software is also "bundled" in a new Polaroid Digital DirectPhoto kit that includes a Polaroid 600 CloseUp camera and a 20-exposure twin-pack of new Polaroid NotePad film, a dedicated "business edition" film based on Polaroid’s latest instant film chemistry.

Because of the film’s high definition colors and edge sharpness, NotePad film is billed as "great for scanning," affording the rapid cyber-transfer of visual information over e-mail, via the Internet or for computer-transferring both visual and written data (NotePad film features note-book-like lines on the lower white border to facilitate on-location notations or written cutlines) in a single visual/written cyber-document.

Additional Polaroid business edition films designed for both office and home use are Polaroid’s new Write-On film affording the ability to add notes or highlight areas directly on the matte-surface print. Called a "writable & drawable" film, new Write-On film can also be scanned and transmitted via computer using Polaroid’s DirectPhoto software. Completing Polaroid’s new commercial film portfolio is new Copy & Fax film, a black-and-white film that produces already "screened" instant prints ideal for photocopying and faxing. A built-in 85-line screen within the new Copy & Fax 10-exposure film pack provides clear "newspaper-like" photo quality images when received by fax or used to add illustrations to photocopied documents.

Polaroid DirectPhoto Imaging Software, the Digital DirectPhoto kit and new NotePad, Write-On and Copy & Fax film highlight Polaroid’s new Digital Imaging Center designed for retailers eager to service the growing Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) market and for retailers now servicing customers with office supplies. Polaroid’s new compact Digital Imaging Center merchandiser makes its world premiere at Photokina ‘98 as a customizable self-serve merchandiser designed to expand to feature such other Polaroid business imaging products as scanners, printers, projectors and the new multi-format range of Polaroid photo-quality inkjet paper.
