Map out se veut un manifeste et une manière de tracer les grandes lignes d'une nouvelle fonction de la peinture. La démonstration se base sur les pratiques récentes de huit artistes, huit personnalités différentes appartenant à deux générations.
La première, composée de FRANCOIS MORELLET, PIERRE SCHWERZMANN, PETER STAMPFLI, VICTOR VASARELY, apparue dans les années 1960 se caractérise par des pratiques élaborées au moment précis où s'affirmait la société de consommation et l'irruption massive de l'image dans les médias. Ils furent sur des modes très différents les premiers à imaginer que ce que l'on nomme abstraction qui n'est pas une simple catégorie esthétique, ni même un jeu plastique ou formel mais une manière de susciter une expérience inédite.
La seconde génération – MIGUEL CHEVALIER, TORBEN GIEHLER, JAN KAMMERLING, DAVID MALEK – ont assurément intégré la leçon de leurs aînés tout en étant conscients des évolutions récentes de l'art contemporain. C'est particulièrement visible dans la manière dont ils définissent le format de leurs toiles, dans leur fascination pour la couleur, pour la structure des compositions, le rendu de la surface, la manière dont l'opposition fond/figure disparaît totalement et dans l'idée qu'une toile abstraite n'est finalement que le témoignage objectif de notre quotidien. L'art abstrait comme témoignage de notre quotidien répond à l'accélération du temps, au doute de plus en plus fort sur la nature de notre réel, aux possibilités offertes par la technologie, autant de phénomènes transformant radicalement nos vies. Nos sensations se font plus abstraites. C'est ce que démontrent avec une distance ironique tous les artistes de Map out en tissant dans une même œuvre interrogations formelles et prises de positions éthiques.

Map out wants to be a manifesto and a way to outline a new function of painting. The demonstration rests on the recent practices of eight artists, eight different personalities belonging to two generations.
The first one, made of FRANCOIS MORELLET, PIERRE SCHWERZMANN, PETER STAMPFLI, VICTOR VASARELY, which appeared in the 1960s, is characterized by practices elaborated at the precise moment when the consumer society emerged and images massively burst into the media. They were in very different manners the first to imagine that what one calls abstraction is not only a simple aesthetic category, not even a plastic or formal game, but a way to generate a new experience.
The second generation –MIGUEL CHEVALIER, TORBEN GIEHLER, JAN KAMMERLING, DAVID MALEK– has obviously assimilated the lesson of their elders while being aware of the recent developments in contemporary art. This is particularly visible in the way these artists define the format of their paintings, in their fascination for colour, for the structure of their compositions, the depiction of the surface, the manner in which the opposition between background and figure totally disappears, and in the idea that an abstract painting is after all only the objective account of our daily life. Abstract art as an account of our daily life responds to the acceleration of time, the increasing doubt on the nature of our reality, the possibilities offered by technology, all these being phenomena which are radically transforming our lives. Our sensations become more abstract. This is what all artists of Map out demonstrate with an ironic distance, weaving in a same work formal questionings and ethical stances.
