The twenty-fifth anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda takes place in April 2019. The ensuing trauma is still deep, dividing Rwandan society. Nearly a million people were victims of the genocide in 1994, and around 250,000 women were raped. Today, victims and perpetrators live next door to each other. For Rwandan Daughters, Olaf Heine has created portraits of these women and the children who were products of these crimes.

In his moving images, the photographer Olaf Heine (*1968) has portrayed mothers and daughters, side by side at the crime sites, from a respectful distance, with a straightforward perspective. Olaf Heine’s photos show us the courage, strength, hope, dignity, and optimism radiating from these women, despite the suffering they have endured.

Besides a travelogue by the Berlin-based artist, this volume of photographs contains brief statements from the women about how they dealt with their experiences, as well as informative essays by the Neue Zürcher Zeitung editor Antje Stahl, the curator Matthias Harder, and the journalist Andrea Jeska. This photo-book project was produced in collaboration with ora Kinderhilfe, an organization that provides psychological and financial support for the victims in Rwanda. Hatje Cantz will donate a portion of the proceeds from this book to Rwandan mothers and daughters.

“Heine’s series of images brings this forgotten, collective human tragedy to the public eye, and he exemplifies it with very authentic, emotional, and individual portraits. We owe him our thanks for that,” says Matthias Harder, chief curator of the Helmut Newton Foundation, of Olaf Heine’s portraits.

Although women in Rwanda have been steadily gaining influence in society ever since the genocide, the rape victims and their children are at the lower end of the social hierarchy. Many young women still manage to rescue their traumatized mothers and help them to free them from the stigma. The courage and optimism of these women in an authoritarian society scarred by trauma are exemplary.

Olaf Heine is a photographer and director. He studied photography and design at the Lette Verein in Berlin, and is mainly known for his portraits of artists, politicians, and athletes, such as Iggy Pop, Bret Easton Ellis, and T.C. Boyle.

Following the publication of Chromes in 2011 and Los Alamos Revisited in 2012, the reassessment of William Eggleston’s career continues with the publication of The Democratic Forest, his most ambitious project. This ten-volume set containing more than a thousand photographs is drawn from a body of twelve thousand pictures made by Eggleston in the 1980s. Following an opening volume of work in Louisiana, which serves as a visual preface, the remaining books cover Eggleston’s travels from his familiar ground in Memphis and Tennessee to Dallas, Pittsburgh, Miami, Boston, the pastures of Kentucky, and as far as the Berlin Wall. The final volume leads the viewer back to the South of small towns, cotton fields, the Civil War battlefield of Shiloh and the home of Andrew Jackson, the President from Tennessee.

Biography

WILLIAM EGGLESTON was born in 1939 and today lives in Memphis. William Eggleston is regarded as one of the greatest photographers of his generation and a major American artist, who has fundamentally changed the way the urban landscape is viewed. He obtained his first camera in 1957 and was later profoundly influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson’s book The Decisive Moment. William Eggleston introduced dye-transfer printing, a previously commercial photographic process, into the making of artists’ prints. His exhibition “William Eggleston’s Guide” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1976 was a milestone. He was also involved in the development of video technology in the seventies. William Eggleston’s work is represented in museums across the world, and in 2008 a retrospective of his work was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and at Haus der Kunst in Munich in 2009.

In this book Miles Aldridge revisits his Polaroid archive of twenty very prolific years of magazine assignments. Many of these Polaroids were intentionally or accidentally damaged while working on different shoots — trimming, adjusting, marking, cutting, pasting, outlining specific details in order to enhance, modify, reassemble or discard. Liberated from their original context, the images take on a life of their own and create an almost dreamlike narrative. By partly enlarging and arranging the Polaroids in unexpected ways, Aldridge treats them as singular, independent images that deserve due respect. His work has been exhibited in numerous group shows, and his solo shows include those at Brancolini Grimaldi in Florence, Hamiltons Gallery in London, and Steven Kasher Gallery in New York. Miles Aldridge’s work is held in the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and in the International Center for Photography in New York.

Salt Pans is Edward Burtynsky’s newest book in his acclaimed ongoing series of photographs exploring different industrialized landscapes across the world. Consisting of 31 aerial photos of the salt pans in the Little Rann of Kutch, the project is the result of months of intricate negotiations and preparations. These striking geometric images, taken in an intense ten-day period during which Burtynsky photographed from a helicopter, present the pans, wells and vehicle tracks as abstract, painterly patterns: subtly colored rectangles crossed by grids of gestural lines.

And yet the reality behind the ironic beauty of Edward Burtynsky’s pictures is a harsh one. Each year 100,000 poorly paid Agariya workers toil in the pans, extracting over a million tons of salt from the floodwaters of the nearby Arabian Sea. EDWARD BURTYNSKY: short biography

Edward Burtynsky was born in 1955 and is one of the world’s most respected photographers. His remarkable depictions of global industrial landscapes are held in the collections of over sixty major museums including the National Gallery of Canada; the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum in New York; Tate Modern, London; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Burtynsky’s distinctions include the TED Prize, the Rencontres d’Arles Outreach Award. In 2006 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and in 2016 he received a Governor General of Canada Award in Visual and Media Arts. He holds six honorary doctorate degrees. Edward Burtynsky’s previous publications with Steidl are China (2005), Quarries (2007), Oil (2009) and Water (2013).

BERENICE ABBOT: Short Biography

Berenice Abbott, born in Springfield, Ohio in 1898, was a dominant figure in twentieth-century American photography. Abbott moved to Paris from New York in 1921 and in 1923 was hired by her friend Man Ray, who was looking for an assistant who knew nothing about photography and whom he could teach. Abbott learned quickly and within a year was taking her own photographs. Over the next 65 years Abbott mastered a wide range of subjects, executing the monumental project Changing New York, photographing rural America and scientific and natural phenomena, establishing the reputation of Eugène Atget, and founding the first university photography program in the United States. Steidl published the two-volume retrospective Berenice Abbott (2008), Documenting Science (2011) and The Unknown Abbott (2013).

Neverland Lost: A Portrait of Michael Jackson, on view at Foley Gallery in New York, is an exhibition of color photographs by HENRY LEUTWYLER featuring the personal belongings of the late Michael Jackson.

As a portrait photographer, Leutwyler has always been interested in investigating the stories told by the artifacts that make up people’s lives. In 2009, Neverland Ranch was packed and crated in preparation for a public auction of Michael Jackson’s possessions. Leutwyler was sent to California to photograph the iconic studded white glove and spent three days sifting through more than a thousand items. In the end it took a second trip back to the warehouse in April 2009 to complete the entire story.

The photographs, many of which are staged on a simple black background, range from bejeweled costumes to a storage box lid filled with small Wizard of Oz figurines. It’s the simplicity of his artifacts that capture the life of the King of Pop the public never saw. As Leutwyler puts it: "It is said that the Pharaohs built tombs to reveal their lives to future generations. Michael Jackson sacrificed his childhood to the calling of his musical gift. Neverland was the pyramid he constructed to a lost childhood."

Swiss born, HENRY LEUTWYLER is an internationally acclaimed and award winning photographer. A creative force in Paris for a decade, he moved to New York City in 1996, where he lives with his wife and two children. His work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Vogue, Vanity Fair and Esquire.

This artist book presents a serie of 24 black and white photographs from Paris.

For this book I choose fairly traditional topics about Paris. Perhaps I could have published in this little book photos with less conventional view of Paris. But I had to make a choice, and Paris offer a good opportunity for this kind of pictures. Living in Paris, I love spending a day or a weekend, adopting the posture of a tourist. It is in these moments that most of the photos included in the book have been taken, between 2005 and 2010.

This hand-made artist book printed with an inkjet printer on 200g drawing paper is limited to 100 numbered and signed.

Wildfire, by SASHA BEZZUBOV is the first public exhibition of photographs from the artist's recent book by the same name, published by Nazraeli Press. In the Wildfire series Sasha Bezzubov focuses on the devastation wrought by wildfires on the American west, with dramatic large-scale landscapes containing charred, burned-out forests, houses and neighborhoods. In one image a spiral staircase rises skyward out of the wreckage, the last remnant of a once standing home. Other photographs in this series focus on the damage inflicted on nature, the pine forests, and whole mountainsides reduced to ashes.

These heartwrenchly beautiful landscapes draw us in and confront us with the uncomfortable notion that we might be somehow to blame. In the introduction to the book Wildfire, writer Bill McKibben explains these distressing statistics: in the last 35 years the number of fires increased by a factor of four; the average fire went from lasting a week to lasting five; the total area burned increased by six and a half times; the average fire season increased by 78 days, or 64 percent. Bill McKibben then goes on to express that these fires are an indicator of global climate change, caused in part by the earlier thaws of snow in the mountains and longer dry seasons. Within these series of photographs, the larger scope of our involvement with the natural world and our ability to protect and preserve against some of the more devastating effects of natural disasters is brought to question...are we to blame, and can we prevent the onslaught of wildfires, are just a few of the questions that arise from Sasha Bezzubov's most recent series.

This is Sasha Bezzubov's third exhibition at the Front Room Gallery, and a continuation of his ongoing series Things Fall Apart, landscape photographs of the aftermath of natural disasters. This series, which began in 2001, contains photographs of forest fires, earthquakes, tidal waves, and tornados, around the world. Wildfire, Bezzubov's most recent presentation from this larger series, targets an intimate look at the catastrophic impact of these uncontrollable fires on many varied landscapes, from urban to wilderness.

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE: JOHN & YOKO’S BED-IN FOR PEACE (Wiley, publisher), presents more than 80 photographs by renowned Life magazine photographer Gerry Deiter, many of which have never been published before. Life magazine photographer Gerry Deiter was present for all eight days of the Bed-in, capturing both large, boisterous gatherings of journalists and celebrities, and the smaller, more intimate moments between John and Yoko. The result was an archive of almost 500 images, many of which were never published – until now. The story Gerry Deiter was working on was bumped by Life in order to cover escalating events in Vietnam, and Deiter hid the photos for 35 years. His friend, and curator of the collection, Joan Athey has compiled them into an entertaining and moving portrait of the times. Deiter passed away in 2005. The large format book captures candid shots of Tommy Smothers, Timothy Leary and his wife Rosemary, New York writer and jazz critic Nat Hentoff, pioneering New York DJ Murray The K, and the aggressive hostility of right-wing cartoonist Al Capp. Personal recollections include journalist Alison Gordon, rock entrepreneur Donald Tarlton (aka “Donald K. Donald”), record producer André Perry, DJ Chuck Chandler, Crawdaddy! rock writer Paul Williams and Capitol Records’ Richard Glanville-Brown. In addition, Yoko Ono has contributed a personal statement that gives modern day relevance to the events in 1969 on the 40th anniversary of what has become an historic moment in rock music history. Gerry DEITER (photographer) was a Brooklyn-born photojournalist and portrait/fashion photographer, teacher, and contributor to Life and Time magazines. He was present for all eight days of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Bed-in for Peace at Montreal’s Queen Elizabeth Hotel in May 1969. Gerry Deiter was also the first photographer for Greenpeace and a peace activist. He died December 9, 2005. Joan ATHEY (writer/curator) is a communications specialist, having worked for 21 years in public relations, marketing and promotion for the CBC and the Toronto Star. Athey resides in Victoria, BC. Paul McGRATH (editor) was rock critic for The Globe and Mail and a reporter for CBC TV’s The Journal. He directed the documentaries John and Yoko’s Year of Peace (CBC, 2000) and Give Peace a Song (CBC, 2005), the latter about the recording of “Give Peace A Chance.” McGrath resides in Toronto. Learn To Avoid Common Problems And Create Portraits With Greater Visual Impact

Norman Phillips, author of Lighting Techniques for High Key Portrait Photography and Lighting Techniques for Low Key Portrait Photography, examines a much over-looked area of photography: the middle key. As Phillips shows, the fact that many photographers ignore middle key as a way of structuring their images results in portraits that may be cluttered or be visually confusing because elements of the scene, subject, clothing, props, and lighting are actually at odds with each other. By approaching these images with the concept of middle key in mind, it becomes much easier to avoid common errors and produce images with greater impact. While photographers are generally familiar with high-key images (photographs with primarily very light tones paired with soft lighting) and low-key images (photographs with primarily dark tones paired with dramatic lighting), the concept of middle key (everything in between) is one that is often overlooked. This is surprising, since this is the key in which the vast majority of images are produced. Lighting Techniques for Middle Key Portrait Photography is now available.

As Norman Phillips shows, by approaching these images with the concept of middle key in mind, it becomes much easier to avoid common lighting errors and produce images with greater impact. These errors occur because photographers often decide to create a portrait that is not high key and not low key. This approach fails to provide sufficient structure because it does not precisely define the objectives of the shoot. As a result, the portraits produced may look cluttered or be visually confusing because elements of the scene, subject, clothing, props, and lighting are actually at odds with each other. By consciously deciding to create a middle key portrait, on the other hand, photographers can help to avoid arbitrary decisions and begin more precisely selecting the kinds of colors and tones that will produce visual harmony and an overall more pleasing appearance in their portraits. They also have a starting point for devising a lighting setup that will harmonize well with all of the other elements in the image, drawing the viewer to just those areas of the scene or subject that the photographer intends to emphasize. Finally, they can implement all of these techniques that communicate the emotional impact they envision.

Route 66 Abandoned The Photography of Edward J Mance

" The decommissioning of Route 66 has had a negative impact on many parts along its path, in some cases, a devastating impact.

Mel Shaker and I set out to photographically document abandoned structures along the old route. The structures were abandoned sometime around the route's decommissioning in 1985.

While we thought we would see a fair number of such structures, nothing could have prepared us for the sheer quantity of them, nor for the devastating degrees of disrepair we would find. Likewise, we never imagined the open access we would have to these abandoned buildings.

We set 3 guiding principles for our visits throughout this journey. We walked onto the property only if a no trespassing sign was not posted. We walked into the buildings only if the doors were not locked. And, we would not move any object away from where we found it.

Factories, gas stations, auto repair facilities, restaurants and diners, stores, schools, homes, farms and even churches -- the decommissioning spared no type.

Every evening, after a day's shoot, we started our dinners by staring at each other in amazement. What happened to the lives of those impacted by the bypassing of the new Interstates? It was as if time stood still. Accounting records still stored in filing cabinets, records dating back decades. Desks, tables, chairs, calendars, cash registers and so much more, all still inside.

And tires. With very few exceptions, each structure had old tires in it. Odd.

About the author

Born in Canada, Edward Mance picked up his first camera at age 13. Like his closest friends, he started by shooting endless roles of black and white film, then spent hours perfecting the final prints. But, as with most creative endeavors, photography would have to take a back seat to career and family. He has since moved to the US, settling in Palo Alto, California. An avid traveler, he was captivated by the enduring intrigue of Route 66. He wanted to capture the truth, a truth… the evidence of abandonment of so many structures once filled with the lives of their occupants. But he wanted to add a human element to his photo shoot as well. The light came on for him when he met and conspired with Melissa Shaker. So he brought Mel into the picture to help tell the story of this once thriving national artery. What follows is a small sample of the collection of photographs taken during their journey from Chicago to Los Angeles.
