The Kranzberg Arts Foundation (KAF), in collaboration with Saint Louis University and the St. Louis Literary Award program, announced a new mural by acclaimed artist DOMINIC CHAMBERS

This mural, on the Walls Off Washington at Saint Louis University’s Searls Hall, explores the legacy of the Underground Railroad and highlights its significance in Missouri and the St. Louis region.

This initiative is closely tied to the 2025 St. Louis Literary Award, which honors Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colson Whitehead. Whitehead’s novel, The Underground Railroad, inspires the mural, creating a robust dialogue between literature, history and public art. The collaboration underscores a commitment to aligning the arts, education and historical reflection, fostering meaningful engagement with the local community.

The project aims to illuminate St. Louis’ historical connections to the Underground Railroad and offer a space for collective reflection and learning. Through a dynamic partnership with Saint Louis University, educators, students and the public will have opportunities to engage with the mural and related programming, including discussions on art, history and literature.

Born in St. Louis and residing and working in New Haven, Conn., DOMINIC CHAMBERS creates vibrant paintings that simultaneously engage art historical models, such as color-field painting and gestural abstraction, and contemporary concerns around race, identity, and the necessity for leisure and reflection. A writer himself, Dominic Chambers is often inspired by literature and has cited Magical Realism, alongside writings by W.E.B. Du Bois, Ralph Ellison, and James Baldwin, as significantly influential to his practice. Dominic Chambers received his B.F.A from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee, WI in 2016, and his M.F.A. from Yale University School of Art in 2019. In 2023, he was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.
"We are honored and overjoyed to welcome Dominic Chambers home to St. Louis for this significant public art project," said Gina Grafos, Chief Curator and Director of Visual & Literary Art at Kranzberg Arts Foundation. "Dominic’s work eloquently intertwines history, memory, and storytelling to create a dialogue that resonates deeply with our region. His new mural, 'For You: All the Color in the World,' draws on multifarious art historical influences and the transformative concept of the veil—a metaphor that invites us to reimagine the inner landscape of our shared experiences. His return is not only a celebration of his extraordinary artistic practice but also a powerful tribute to the vibrant narratives that shape our past and inspire our future. We could not imagine a more fitting artist to bring this vision to life."
The Walls Off Washington mural initiative, a project of the Kranzberg Arts Foundation, continues to serve as a platform for large-scale, thought-provoking works that reflect St. Louis's cultural and historical fabric.

Above Ground: Art from the Martin Wong Graffiti Collection @ Museum of the City of New York

Above Ground
Art from the Martin Wong Graffiti Collection
Museum of the City of New York
November 22, 2024 – August 10, 2025
“There are people who see the graffiti experience as a vocation of adolescence, rites of passage without a sense of direction... But I saw it early on as a catalyst to develop as a painter and explore the other horizons outside of a 40-foot subway car.” – Lee Quiñones
The Museum of the City of New York presents Above Ground: Art from the Martin Wong Graffiti Collection, an extraordinary exhibition tracing the evolution of graffiti art from its roots on the streets of New York City in the early 1970s to recognition and celebration in galleries and museums worldwide.

Above Ground showcases work drawn from the Museum's substantial graffiti art collection, complemented by loans from private collections. It highlights the transition many graffiti artists made from tagging subway cars to creating paintings on canvas, marking a pivotal moment in the movement's evolution as it entered broader public awareness and significantly influenced global culture.

The exhibition highlights many never seen donated 30 years ago by the visionary artist and collector Martin Wong – including works in aerosol, ink, and other mediums by key figures such as Keith Haring, Futura 2000, Fab 5 Freddy, Rammellzee, Lee Quiñones, Haze, Crash, Lady Pink, and Tracy 168.
Above Ground celebrates the 30th anniversary of Martin Wong’s donation to the museum and the 10th anniversary of MCNY’s initial City as Canvas exhibition,” says Sean Corcoran, Senior Curator of Prints and Photographs at the Museum of the City of New York. “This show offers a renewed and expanded look at graffiti’s journey from NYC streets to the most prestigious galleries around the world.”
The exhibition is organized into several sections, highlighting the origins of graffiti and its broader cultural impact, particularly the Post-Graffiti movement. The exhibition touches on the East Village scene, and the impact of early indie galleries such as Fun Gallery, Fashion Moda, and others that showcased graffiti on canvas. It considers the art form’s initial international success and underscores the legacy of Martin Wong and his commitment to preserving the art form.

Select exhibition highlights include:

• Martha Cooper’s photographs of work by Keith Haring and more;
• Lee Quiñones’ monumental painting, A Life Takes a Life (1983);
• TRACY 168 from ESSY Studio sketch pad (1980);
• Rammellzee’s Atomic Note (1986) and Atomic Futurism (1987);
• A-One’s spray paint on canvas work, Beauty of a Beast (In Memory of Bear 167) (1987);
• Photographs from Henry Chalfant’s Subway Art series, including Skeme and Daze and Kel Crash;
• DAZE spray paint on canvas pieces, Phobia (1983) and French Dream. Life Below Aerosol (1984);
• Several pieces from KAWS’ collection, including DONDI’s Bishop of Battle (1985); and Martin Wong’s Sharp and Dottie (1984);
• A documentary by Charlie Ahearn on Martin Wong’s collection, offers a deeper understanding of the art and its historical context.
Stephanie Hill Wilchfort, Ronay Menschel Director and President of the Museum of the City of New York, adds, “Born in New York City, graffiti is now a global phenomenon This exhibition not only celebrates the artistic contributions of graffiti artists, reflects the dynamic and everevolving culture of our city, and explores how New York’s art and popular culture influences the world.”

Jayme Burtis / André Butzer @ Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles - Painters of the San Gabriel Mountains pt. 2

Jayme Burtis / André Butzer
Painters of the San Gabriel Mountains pt. 2
Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles
November 6, 2022 – January 7, 2023

Painters of the San Gabriel Mountains pt. 2 is a joint exhibition of Jayme Burtis and André Butzer, both of whom founded the eponymous artist group.

Growing up in Venice, California, JAYME BURTIS found himself at the center of the original and now legendary Venice Beach graffiti, skate and surf scene in the mid-1980s. Under the pseudonym VISION, he began spraying to revolt against, celebrate and shape the built environment around him. The dense, mural-like aesthetics of graffiti still influence the graphic, irreverent world of Jayme Burtis’s paintings and drawings. He employs a variety of materials, from watercolor and pencil to spray paint, acrylic, and charcoal.

His multilayered block-letters of graffiti with grotesque, humorous figures with bulging eyes and hanging tongues, often toting knives, encounter small abstract canvases by ANDRÉ BUTZER—making the exhibition a genuine testimony to Jayme Burtis’ and André Butzer’s friendship, mutual respect and artistic explorations.

Bansky @ Serlachius Museum Gösta, Mänttä, Finland - A Visual Protest

Banksy. A Visual Protest
Serlachius Museum Gösta, Mänttä, Finland
15 May - 10 October 2021

Banksy. A Visual Protest features, in particular, works belonging to BANSKY’s early output: graphics and record covers. The exhibition is complemented by multimedia of street art he has made around the world, some of which has already been lost.

The exhibition has previously been seen in Milan and Rome and is curated by Gianni Mercurio, a curator specialising in pop and street art. This is not an official Banksy exhibition, as it has not been authorised by the artist himself. However, all the exhibition works are authenticated Banksy works from different collections.

The identity of Banksy (b. 1970s) – from Bristol, England – is unknown. Since the 1990s, he has produced street art, performances and artistic tricks around the world. Banksy has eluded the authorities for years, as attempts have been made to hold him accountable for, among other things, defacing public places.

Protected by his anonymity, Banksy makes street art in public places and has smuggled his own works into museums without the staff noticing. His stencil technique enables him to work quickly and to create visually skilful work with engaging content.

Underneath the humour, social protest is revealed

Banksy’s art mocks commercialism and criticises consumer society. His themes are often anti-war and deeply humane, but at the same time contain warm humour. Animal rights, climate change, the exercise of power and hypocrisy are also important subjects – the multidimensionality of the themes are a hallmark of Banksy’s art. His works first appear humorous, but on closer inspection they exude strong social protest.

“I am proud that it is possible for Serlachius, in this informal, expertly curated exhibition that magnificently covers the themes of Banksy’s art, to present one of the world’s most important contemporary artists,” says Pauli Sivonen, Director of the Serlachius Museums.

Banksy has repeatedly expressed his resentment to the fact that street art is on show at museums charging an admission fee. For this reason, the Serlachius Museums will not charge an entrance fee for the duration of the Banksy exhibition and will not sell merchandise related to the exhibition.

Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles present its opening fall show 3 Kings. In classic NYC Subway Graffiti lore, a “King” is one who has achieved the most recognition for not only excellence in style but for the mark they have made on the culture. For over thirty years these “3 Kings” have been at the top of the game. This exhibition features their contemporary work created exclusively for this show along with classic pieces.

3 KINGS & ONE QUEEN OF URBAN ARTS

FAB 5 FREDDY (FRED BRATHWHAITE) is well known as Hip Hop’s ambassador to the world. His early work with Blondie on the hit “Rapture,” his creation of the seminal film “Wild Style” (directed by Charlie Ahearn) and his groundbreaking shows at the FUN Gallery brought graffiti art, rap music and break-dancing to the big stage. He would go on to co-produce and host “Yo, MTV Raps!”, the first show to regularly feature this culture on TV. Starting with his famous “Campbell’s Soup Can” subway car homage to Andy Warhol, Fred Brathwaite has been at the vanguard-- and his new work is no exception.

LEE QUINONES is generally recognized as "the greatest graffiti artist of all time". His ten whole car train with the Fabulous Five is a feat that has never been matched. Lee was also the creator of the graffiti writers’ creed, “If art is a crime, let God forgive me.” From his first show at the FUN Gallery in 1982 “Rust-O-LEEum”, he has never looked back, expanding his painting in extremely sophisticated ways while often including a touching look at the past.

FUTURA 2000 (LEONARD MCGURR) had his first one man show at the FUN Gallery in 1981 and with his unique, ethereal style became one of the FUN’s most successful artists. He was instrumental in bringing graffiti art to Europe and beyond with rock group The Clash, painting back drops on tour and designing album art. Leonard McGurr aka Futura 2000 was also one of the first artists to work with manufacturers of transformer figures and clothing designs. His otherworldly new work is always eagerly awaited.

In 1981, PATTI ASTOR was famous as “The Queen of The Downtown Screen”. Having worked with such directors as Amos Poe, Jim Jarmusch and Eric Mitchell, she was starring in her 12th beyond low budget “No Wave Cinema” film, UNDERGROUND USA, (the punk rock Sunset Boulevard), enjoying a six month run as the midnight movie at the St. Mark’s Cinema. Fab 5 Freddy (Fred Brathwaite) had come downtown to check it out and so the “King of Uptown” met the “Queen of Downtown”.

Unbelievably at that time no one in the downtown Mudd Club scene had ever heard of graffiti art, break-dancing or rap. However, that was soon to change. With partner Bill Stelling, Patti Astor opened FUN GALLERY, the first art gallery in NYC’s East Village. From 1981-1985 this gritty tenement storefront was the epicenter of the early 80’s cultural explosion in art, music and dance. With Fab 5 Freddy leading the way, downtown punk rock met uptown hip-hop. English rockers The Clash and the Sex Pistols partied with Futura 2000 and the Rock Steady Crew, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf traded tags with DONDI and LEE and Jean Michel Basquiat spun platters with Afrika Bambaata, everyone rocking to the box at the FUN, while renowned collectors, art historians and museum directors joined in the party.

Though the FUN Gallery’s duration was brief, the barriers had come down and the art world would never be the same. With longtime friends and veterans of the most important cultural explosion of the last thirty years, Subliminal Projects Gallery's exhibition 3 KINGS in Los Angeles, California, is also an homage to the NYC's FUN Gallery.

Graffitis Pochoirs Paris Saint-Ouen
