Phoenix Art Museum (PhxArt) has announced the recipients of the 2025 Arizona Artist Awards. Alice Leora Briggs was named the recipient of the 2025 Scult Family Artist Award and Chris Ignacio and Jan Talmadge Davids were named the recipients of the 2025 Sally and Richard Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards (Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards). New this year is the Sette/Cohn Artist Award, established in 2024 to expand the Arizona Artist Awards program and deepen PhxArt’s support of local artists. Shaunté Glover was named the inaugural recipient. As part of the awards, each artist receives a lifetime Membership to Phoenix Art Museum as well as funds to support their artistic practice. Briggs, Ignacio, and Talmadge Davids will also have the opportunity to exhibit their work in solo and group exhibitions at the Museum premiering in summer 2026.

Alice Leora Briggs: Scult Family Artist Award

Each year, Phoenix Art Museum recognizes a mid-career Arizona-based artist with the Scult Family Artist Award. Eligible candidates must have resided in Arizona for a minimum of four consecutive years and are nominated by a group of curators, museum directors, and other arts professionals from across the state. Their candidacy is evaluated based on their demonstration of artistic excellence, active creation and exhibition of new work, and career-spanning evolution. Following a robust review process, a jury of curators, art scholars, artists, and other experts and professionals in the field from across the country selects the recipient. The Scult Family Artist Award includes monetary support of $20,000 and an invitation to present a solo exhibition of new and past work at the Museum. The 2025 Scult Artist Award jury included Lana Meador, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, San Antonio Museum of Art; Olivia Miller, Executive Director, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon; Ann Morton, 2019 Scult Family Artist Award recipient; Christian Ramírez, Cohn Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art and Director of Engagement, Phoenix Art Museum; and Jeff Scult.

The 2025 Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award recipient is Alice Leora Briggs. Born in an oil boomtown in West Texas, Briggs grew up in Idaho’s Snake River Valley and is now based in Tucson, Arizona. Through her practice, she investigates human frailties through drawings, woodcuts, letterpress broadsides, site-specific installations, and books. Her work has been featured in more than 50 solo exhibitions and is represented in more than 35 public collections, including those of Phoenix Art Museum; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Library of Congress; Oxford’s Bodleian Library; and Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.  Her publications include Dreamland: The Way Out of Juárez (2010); an illuminated manuscript-police blotter created with writer Charles Bowden; Abecedario de Juárez: An Illustrated Lexicon (2022) produced with photojournalist Julián Cardona; and The Room, a portfolio of woodcuts created with U.S. poet laureate Mark Strand. Briggs was a Fulbright Scholar at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia, and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2020. She received her MFA from the University of Iowa and is represented by Evoke Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Etherton Gallery in Tucson, Arizona.  

Chris Ignacio and Jan Talmadge Davids: Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards

The Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards foster the creative practices and careers of emerging Arizona-based artists. Candidates must have resided in Arizona for a minimum of one year and are invited to apply through an annual open call hosted by Artlink, a non-profit organization that has supported and amplified Arizona artists and community-based art events and initiatives for more than 30 years. Recipients receive $10,000 in monetary support and the opportunity to present a joint exhibition at the Museum with fellow Lehmann awardees. The 2025 Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards jury was also assembled by Ramírez and included Ramírez; Lana Meador, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, San Antonio Museum of Art; Olivia Miller, Executive Director, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon; Ann Morton, 2019 Scult Family Artist Award recipient; and Sally Lehmann.

The Museum has named Chris Ignacio and Jan Talmadge Davids as the recipients of the 2025 Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards. Based in Phoenix, Chris Ignacio is a Filipino-American puppeteer, producer, educator, and interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection of voice, technology, and identity. He began his puppetry career in New York in 2012, training with experimental artists at La MaMa and working across theater, community arts, and livestream media. In 2023, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera as a puppeteer in Florencia en el Amazonas, directed by Mary Zimmerman. He has also premiered original puppetry works at New York theaters including La MaMa, The Tank, and The Brick, and has toured both nationally and abroad. In Phoenix, Ignacio has served as a media designer for major institutions such as Ballet Arizona, Arizona Broadway Theater, Arizona Opera, and Childsplay. His original projects, including those featured in exhibitions at Vision Gallery and Mesa Arts Center, center community collaboration, particularly with young people or people with limited arts exposure. He holds an MFA in Theatre/Interdisciplinary Digital Media from Arizona State University (ASU), where he now teaches motion capture and 3D animation. Ignacio also serves as creative producer for the T. Denny Sanford Harmony Institute at ASU. 

Jan Talmadge Davids

Jan Talmadge Davids works in clay and mixed media to explore landscapes of her childhood and their local  ecologies and to articulate ideas of place-making. Through installation and material sensitivities, she invites the viewer to engage in the ideas of fragility and vulnerability. Talmadge Davids was born in Tucson, Arizona, spending her youth in the southeastern part of the state. She attended the University of Arizona, California State University at Long Beach, and then came from Los Angeles to pursue her MFA at the Herberger School of Art and Design, where she found the opportunity to reconcile her past with her present, which is embedded in the desert landscape. Her work has been shown at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery; The Carolyn Campanga Klefeeld Contemporary Art Museum in Long Beach, CA; Tempe Center for the Arts; eye lounge; The Tucson Museum of Art; and Art d’Core Gala.

Shaunté Glover: Sette/Cohn Artist Award

Established in 2024, the Sette/Cohn Artist Award was created to expand PhxArt’s Arizona Artist Awards program.  The new $5,000 prize is awarded to an emerging Arizona artist selected from the Lehmann Emerging Artist Award application pool as part of a five-year initiative dedicated to supporting arts engagement and strengthening community partnerships. It is named in honor of Lisa Sette, who has supported and represented Arizona-based artists, both through her gallery and personally, for more than 40 years, and Lee and Mike Cohn, longtime Museum supporters who in 2023 provided the seed funding to launch the Phoenix Art Museum Education and Engagement Excellence Fund and have extended their generosity to support Arizona-based artists. The award’s recipient is selected by Christian Ramírez, Cohn Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art and Director of Engagement, Phoenix Art Museum; Olga Viso, Selig Family Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs, Phoenix Art Museum; Lee and Mike Cohn; and Lisa Sette.

The inaugural 2025 Sette/Cohn Artist Award recipient is Shaunté Glover. Glover is a multidisciplinary artist based in Phoenix, Arizona. Her creative journey spans photography, film, printmaking, and sculpture, exploring identity and representation to use art as a catalyst to increase visibility, strengthen community engagement, and amplify the voices of marginalized communities, particularly those of Black women. Rooted in her upbringing in South Phoenix, Glover’s work draws from memories of childhood, basketball, family, and everyday neighborhood life. She combines these influences into layered visual narratives that reflect lived experience and cultural nuance.

In the 44th edition of the prestigious photography award, the LOBA jury selected Italian-born, Swiss-based photographer DAVIDE MONTELEONE (link to photographs, biography, statement) with his series “Critical Minerals – Geography of Energy,” for the main prize, while Moldovan photographer MARIA GUTU won the LOBA Newcomer Award for her “Homeland” series. The two winning series were selected from a field of around 250 submissions, which had been previously presented to the LOBA jury by roughly 80 international photography experts from around 50 countries.

The LOBA is amongst the most highly endowed and prestigious awards in the field of photography: the winner of the LOBA receives 40,000 euros and Leica camera equipment valued at 10,000 euros, while the winner of the Newcomer Award receives 10,000 euros and a Leica Q3.

On 10th October the two winners have been honoured during the award ceremony and as part of an exhibition showing all twelve shortlisted series, within the framework of the Celebration of Photography in Wetzlar, Germany. After the exhibition at the Ernst Leitz Museum in Wetzlar, the LOBA 2024 series will be shown in other Leica Galleries and at photo festivals around the world.

Kunstverein Hannover has been running a residency program for young artists for over 40 years. At the end of the program, their newly created works are shown in an exhibition at Kunstverein Hannover - this time not by three artists as usual, but by five.

The one- and two-year scholarships, which have been awarded since 1983, support artistic development both through project funding and by providing living and working space. The Kunstverein Hannover Award, with its regional and national focus, is supported by the Kunstverein Hannover, whose premises are made available to the scholarship holders for a final exhibition.

PABLO SCHLUMBERGER

In his artistic practice, Pablo Schlumberger (born 1990 in Aachen, lives and works in Düsseldorf) draws on various (art) historical epochs as well as high and pop culture. His works in the fields of sculpture, drawing, painting, installation and media art deal with the question of representation and perception in a humorous way. After completing his studies at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts in 2018 under Andreas Slominski, his works have been shown in Cologne, Münster, Hamburg and Varese (Italy), among others. In 2023 he received the Neustart Plus scholarship from the Stiftung Kunstfonds. In 2020 he was a fellow of the Residence NRW+ program in Münster and received the Kunstverein Hannover Award.

As if he had just escaped from the circus ring, the Messerwerfer (knife-thrower) performs on stages in several exhibition spaces at the Kunstverein. Confrontational and playful at the same time, the figure establishes a connection to the outside world. The stages appear staged and artificial, the double staging in the exhibition space takes on an initially absurd appearance. In a combination of painting and installation, an absurd profession seems to be addressed, that of an entertainer, a showman - humorously displayed here in all its irony.

TUGBA SIMSEK

Tuğba Şimşek (born 1986 in Grünstadt, lives and works in Hanover) draws on lived experiences, feelings, fragments of memory, places and everyday observations in their contradictory nature. She studied at the Braunschweig University of Art, where she graduated in 2019 as a master student of Olav Christopher Jenssen. She also studied at the Freie Kunstakademie Mannheim, the Metropolitan University of Art and Design Cardiff and the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles. Tuğba Şimşek's work has been presented in numerous exhibitions, and in 2022 she received the Kunstverein Hannover Award. She has been awarded various scholarships, including Atelier auf Zeit, Kunstverein Grafschaft Bentheim (2021).

Tuğba Şimşek records what she perceives in her surroundings casually, sometimes with her eyes closed, but always intuitively. Drawing has become a habit for her, a diary - a natural sequence of movements. In her new installation at the Kunstverein, the black circles on the walls look like targets - and the powdery colors provided look like an invitation: visitors are invited to participate in a large chalk painting and to see the black targets as deep wells of happiness into which something is thrown. The collective process leads to a joint product that is left to change and chance. Elsewhere, Tetris bricks - based on childhood memories - seem to glide across a huge, jet-black blackboard wall: the paused representation of a video game that stands for the childhood and youth of an entire generation. At the same time, childhood is the stage of life in which lack of intention, whether in play or in boredom, drives one's own creative work. The combination of biographical elements, subconscious images and involuntary action are brought together in Tuğba Şimşek's working method.

CATHARINA SZONN

Catharina Szonn (born 1987, Großenhain) studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach, the Iceland Academy of Arts Reykjavik and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In her expansive installations, she poetically questions and updates the relationship between man and machine, progress and transience. Her artistic practice touches on philosophical themes and integrates text and language. Catharina Szonn has taken part in exhibition projects such as the European Media Art Festival Osnabrück (2019) and has shown her work in solo exhibitions in Amberg, Constance and Frankfurt am Main, among others. In 2022 she received the Kunstverein Hannover Award, and in 2023 the research grant for visual arts from the Berlin Senate Administration.

Catharina Szonn's work at the Kunstverein, which borrows from elements of skittles, presents a more or less dysfunctional machine: it raises and lowers itself, sometimes with great effort, and seems to train itself with each attempt; the cumbersome movement illustrates wear and tear. The machine acts as a performer, making the redundancy of its actions visible in seemingly endless repetitions. The movements are accompanied on LED displays with poetic comments such as this: "Time is running and with it the distance that spreads between a beginning and an end. Please don't go away. Change your mind and stay. More important than the show is that the future is certain. I want you to love me."

LENA MARIE EMRICH

Lena Marie Emrich (born 1991 in Göttingen, lives and works in Brussels, Göttingen and Berlin) deals with the physical and the linguistic, with spatial and human exchange in her artistic practice, which interweaves performance, documentation and sculpture. Lena Marie Emrich's works and collective projects have been exhibited in Paris, Berlin, Bergen, Leipzig, Düsseldorf and Milan, among others. She has been working as a stage designer at the Schaubühne Berlin since 2022. In 2020 she won the Toy Award of the Berlin Masters Foundation, in 2022 she was awarded the Kunstverein Hannover Award. In 2023 she received the Neustart Plus grant from the Stiftung Kunstfonds. Her works are represented in collections such as the Burger Collection, the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Arndt Collection and the Marval Collection.

The curved shape of Lena Marie Emrich's Gossip Chairs, an installative ensemble on Sophienstraße that invites people to take a seat, means that although the people sitting on them are facing in different directions, they are nevertheless facing each other and are aware of each other. The result is a staged or forced closeness that becomes a game between intimacy and conversation on the one hand and confrontation with strangers, observing and being observed on the other. Whether tête-à-tête or ménage-à-trois - each of the sculptures tells a different story and encourages viewers to engage in shared conversations. Moral questions are addressed based on the shape of the serpentine. 16 texts selected by the artist and accessible via a digital archive are available via QR codes.

Lena Marie Emrich's practice is a symbiosis of sculptural and fragmentary poetry. The wall works "I Heard Only Good Things" and "Rumors Do Not Fall From The Heavens" allude to the ambivalence that gossip brings with it. Although it has negative connotations, gossip accompanies us in our everyday lives: at work or on our nightly rambles, on social media and in other media. The cliché that labels gossip as typically female has misogynistic connotations - and at the same time, it was long the only form in which women could express themselves uncensored on critical topics.

OLE BLANK

In his multimedia practice, Ole Blank (born 1990 in Lübeck) uses social, cultural and natural commonplaces as conceptual starting points, which he translates into poetic and allegorical images in space. Since graduating from the Braunschweig University of Art in 2017, his work has been shown in group and solo exhibitions in Romania, the Netherlands and Germany. Locally, he has been involved in projects such as the Absent Academy and the Niki Residency Program in Hanover. In 2022 he received the Kunstverein Hannover Award. As a fellow of the residency program Fusion:Air 2024 (Romania) and guest artist at the Hertz-Labor (ZKM Karlsruhe), he deepens his practice in the context of transdisciplinary interferences between art, science and technology.

In a sound archive created especially for the new work at the Kunstverein, the artist collected acoustic recordings of beaches, bays and dunes on the various seas of Europe.

The composition begins with the cries of seagulls in the early morning and ends with a cicada concert in the late evening - with the sound of the sea always present. Voices or other references to possible locations are deliberately omitted. The new sound work Wave Room is an attempt to create a surreal phonogram that compresses the European continent in space and time in such a way that it can be explored or at least imagined in its entirety. The result is a contemplative soundscape that can only be experienced through listening.

The two-year Lower Saxony scholarship is awarded to freelance artists who have completed a university degree and are aged up to 35 (at the time of application) and who live or were born in Lower Saxony or Bremen.

Lower Saxony Scholarship for Young Artists (January-December 2025)

The one-year Lower Saxony Scholarship for Young Artists is awarded to freelance artists up to three years after graduation who live or were born in Lower Saxony or Bremen.

New York-based Swiss artist (sculpture, video and installation) UGO RONDINONE (*1964 in Brunnen, Switzerland) received the 15th Robert Jacobsen Prize of the Würth Foundation. He is one of the most acclaimed international artists of his generation who has already been honored with numerous solo exhibitions, among others in London, Paris, Boston, Zurich, Rotterdam or Frankfurt. After all, his monumental groups of works can repeatedly be found dominating public space, whether in urban contexts such as New York and Paris or in the Nevada desert.

“Rondinone's works have their own poetry and are inspired by his own experiences and events. They boast immense density as they are rich in quotations from art history, literature, and pop culture. With seemingly playful material observations in an aesthetic of archetypes that can be sensually experienced and approached by the viewer, the artist creates a connection between the subjective and universal world images," according to the jury of the 15th Robert Jacobsen Prize of the Würth Foundation. “His skillful brilliance is characterized by this poignant immediacy combined with a formal language shaped by a high degree of seriality and the use of the most different artistic media. The captivating formal translation of universal fields of tension such as time and transience, day and night, reality and fiction, nature and culture makes him a worthy laureate of the 15th Robert Jacobsen Prize of the Würth Foundation. Last but not least, the participatory character of his work was convincing.”

The awarding of the prize together with a presentation of the artist's work at one of the museums of the Würth Collection is scheduled for the spring of 2024.

About the Robert Jacobsen Prize

After the death of sculptor Robert Jacobsen in 1993, the Würth Foundation endowed the Robert Jacobsen Prize in cooperation with Museum Würth. Every other year, it is awarded to contemporary visual artists to commemorate Robert Jacobsen’s oeuvre and influence. After their first accidental encounter in the 1970s, the Danish sculptor and Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Reinhold Würth, entrepreneur and art collector, became long-standing friends. In 1991, Jacobsen had completed his largest sculpture installation on the forecourt of the Würth Group's new administration building, which has shaped the appearance of the Group's headquarters ever since. The Robert Jacobsen Prize is endowed with EUR 50,000.

Annette Lemieux: Maud Morgan Prize 2017

Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Awards 2017 Maud Morgan Prize, Honoring a Massachusetts Woman Artist, to Annette Lemieux

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), announced that Boston-based ANNETTE LEMIEUX (born 1957) is the recipient of its 2017 Maud Morgan Prize, which honors a Massachusetts woman artist who has demonstrated creativity and vision, and who has made significant contributions to the contemporary arts landscape. Ranging from painting to photography to found-object assemblage, Lemieux’s conceptual works confront urgent subjects such as the horror of war, the nature of time, the elusive truth of memory and the relationship between personal experience and cultural history. Currently a Senior Lecturer on Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University, she has influenced younger generations of artists as a teacher for more than 20 years. The Museum has collected Annette Lemieux’s works since the late 1980s, cultivating a sustained belief in her practice. As part of the Prize, the artist will receive a $10,000 award, and an exhibition of her work will be presented at the MFA in the summer.

“Annette is fearless about tackling timely socio-political issues in her artwork. She is a careful observer of the world and a thoughtful commentator on important issues of our time,” said Matthew Teitelbaum, Ann and Graham Gund Director of the MFA. “We look forward to working closely with her and sharing her voice with a wide and appreciative public.”

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Annette Lemieux received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford in 1980. After graduation, she spent a decade in New York City, working as an assistant for artist David Salle and becoming part of a burgeoning scene of appropriation artists—alongside Sarah Charlesworth, Barbara Kruger and Cindy Sherman—who frequently incorporated text, images, objects and symbols from mass media and pop culture into their work. Her work was featured in the Whitney Biennial in 1987 and 2000, as well as the Venice Biennale in 1990.

Annette Lemieux is the recipient of awards and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation Fellowship, Brown University and the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Germany. In 2009 she received an honorary doctorate in fine arts from Montserrat College of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally and acquired by museums across the United States and Europe. In addition to the MFA, these include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Tel Aviv Museum of Art and more. Lemieux’s critically acclaimed projects include solo exhibitions Unfinished Business (2012) at Harvard University’s Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and the mid-career survey The Strange Life of Objects: The Art of Annette Lemieux (2010) at the Worcester Art Museum.

Al Miner, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, will collaborate with Annette Lemieux on her solo 2017 exhibition at the MFA marking the award of the Maud Morgan Prize.

“Annette has long been an admired and beloved fixture in the region’s art scene,” said Al Miner. “I’m thrilled to be working with an artist so deserving of this distinction. And I especially look forward to introducing audiences to recent MFA acquisitions and to debuting her exciting new body of work, which evidences her staying power.”

MAUD MORGAN PRIZE

Established at the Museum in 1993, the Maud Morgan Prize honors the recipient with a cash award and an MFA presentation of her work. The $10,000 prize is given biennially to a Massachusetts woman who has worked as an artist for at least 10 years, who has demonstrated creativity and vision, and who has made significant contributions to the contemporary arts landscape. In addition to recommendations by MFA curators, nominations are solicited from a broad cross-section of contemporary curators from throughout the Commonwealth. This year’s process involved 25 nominating organizations—more than in any previous year—and resulted in five finalists. After submissions were reviewed, finalists were chosen by a committee of MFA curators, and visits were made to the artists’ studios. Committee members selected Annette Lemieux, a decision endorsed by MFA Director Matthew Teitelbaum.

The committee included Al Miner (Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art), Jen Mergel (Robert L. Beal, Enid L. Beal and Bruce A. Beal Senior Curator of Contemporary Art), Liz Munsell (Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art and Special Initiatives, a position supported by Lorraine Bressler), Emily Zilber (Ronald C. and Anita L. Wornick Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts), Kathryn Gunsch (Teel Curator of African and Oceanic Art) and Patrick Murphy (Lia and William Poorvu Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings and Supervisor, Morse Study Room).

MAUD MORGAN (1903 - 1999)

During her most active years as an artist and instructor in Massachusetts, Maud Morgan represented a voice of recognition for women committed to a career in the arts. She was associated with some of the most distinguished artists of the 1930s and studied at the Art Students League in New York with Hans Hoffman. Morgan exhibited with the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York in the company of Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko before instructing students of studio art, including Frank Stella and Carl Andre, with her then-husband, painter Patrick Morgan, at Abbot Academy and Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. At the age of 92, she published her autobiography, Maud’s Journey: A Life from Art. Throughout her career, Morgan was a source of inspiration for many artists, young and old.

The 22 year old was presented with the award at Modern Art Oxford by artist Lindsay Seers for her work - a series of intense paintings that explore the mind as a channel for restructuring the concept of space.

CVAN South East would like to see Platform continue to develop closer working relationships between South East galleries and their local Higher Education institutions while providing opportunities to support and showcase new talent.’

Joella Wheatley was one of eight graduate artists shortlisted as part of the Platform Graduate Award 2012 - an inaugural mentor programme devised by the CVAN South East network, between galleries and emerging artists from the South East.

Platform Award selection panel member and Director of MK Gallery, Anthony Spira said the standard of work throughout the Platform project had been particularly high, highlighting the wealth of Fine Art talent in the South East.

Over the last few months four flagship galleries, Aspex, MK Gallery, Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary, have each provided a platform for 31 recent graduates from each of their local art colleges, of which eight were shortlisted for the award.

Joella Wheatley will receive a 12-month tailored programme of professional development from the four South East art galleries as well as £2,500 bursary towards further development of her practice.

Sarang Kusale, the designer of the awarded design Numnum explains “Children of age two to five years like to play always. This element of playfulness can be effectively used to make a monotonous task enjoyable. This spoon encourage the child to eat with his/her own hands, the multiform nature of spoon provides flexibility and encourage to play and eat. To hold the spoon the child can use power grip position, and it will improve the motor movement skills. The perceived multi-form and multi-hold nature of spoons boosts the imagination of child and he/she will think loud and tell different stories. ”
